Experiences With Anthestics In Older Dogs
Munchin replied to Munchin's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks Erny! -
I have been feeding my guys ( 3 dogs and one cat and the previous cat) on roo for quite a few years. I never had a problem with the realy fresh stuff, would almost loose my finger if not the hand. Then the local supermarket starting stocking human grade, that was okay they thought still ate it. Local pet shop starting getting in legs and mincing it themselves and put into normal freezer plastic bags and frozen. That was fine by them too, but enjoyed it cooked more, as I had to do when I forgot to get it out of the freezer in the morning. Then it all changed. Pet shop starting getting it in from their other agency, in a shrink wrap plastic covering with metal ends. None of the four would touch it, they would walk up to it and sniff at it, walk away and look at me.... as if saying what it that cr#p you are trying to feed us! It would sit there until I through it out the next day. Tried to feed them on different days after different meals. Asked the shop what they were doing differently, they said nothing, except the packaging. Left if for a week or so and tried again to feed them on roo this time on the human grade. Damn beasties... straight back into it, licked the plates clean.! All I could work out and assume is that the packaging that roo meat comes in can affect the smell of the meat, and possibly the level of preservative has an affect too. Human grade has alot less than pet. So now I cook it on roo night and only buy the human grade or fresh (that I know is fresh). I couldnt say that it was one of the kids being fussy when all four did it. So for me, smell plays a major part in whether it is eaten or not.

Experiences With Anthestics In Older Dogs

Thanks for all your responses. I rang the vets today and had a good chat to them. They use gas to knock them out then depending on the pre blood work results gas or a mix off through the surgery. So all going well I should have a dog with numerous stitches this time tomorrow night. I will stress and not sleep tonight but I am alot better than last night. All thanks to your support and understanding. Will let you know how it goes. This is my boy... Zak. (thanks to TLC for the beautiful photo!) -

Thanks Rappie for your understanding., and everone else. Its something that I know for his quality of life has to be done, I just wish it didnt. He might be going blind and deaf but he still gives the feral cats here a run for their money. Overall his health is good and he isnt too fat, last weight was around 17kg down from 20kg, should be around the 15kg or so. Worked on that for the last 6 months, paid off now. I have faith in my vet and understand that sometimes things dont go to plan. She has stated that she will take the worst ones off and depending on how he is going will try and get the rest off as well as check his teeth (as he is already under), it will just depend on how he is going. I am going to check what sort of anesthetic they are using, (thanks Elfin), as this could be why he took so long to come back to normal last time. I am just trying to settle my nerves before Friday. -
Hi I have to put my 14yrs old boy (whippetxheeler) back under to get his numerous skin cancers removed again. Its been a while since he had the last one removed as it started bleeding. He has lost weight since then but is still over weight, loosing slowly. These cancers have grown rapidly and one is already scabbing (next step is the bleeding). After the last anesthetic it took him over 36hrs to even start to act normal, 48 hrs to be normal. He is getting the pre blood work and the pre drip and the vet uses the best anesthetic. I am just so terrified that he wont come out of it. I know the risk but would love to hear of other peoples experiences with older dogs, please only the good ones, I am struggling with this decision.

I dont know if this is the same thing that was on talk back radio in Bendigo a while ago. Alot of people had the same problem and they all had similar answers. The best one heard was from a lady who had an old bushie tell her to make the dog walk backwards and it should go back in automaticaly. She said she was sceptical until she tried it and it work. So who knows maybe the old remedies do work sometimes.

Cant wait!! Will just have to work on getting ALL of us there!

Tenties, think I went to that particular house quite a few years back, bike parts, but didnt pay much attention. Off the map its about 20km (long way) 15 (short way and 4wd) from where I am. We will have to catch up out our way and make those cities dogs play in the mud with ours!! Would love to TLC lot, but wouldnt like the cleaning after!

They all hate me Munchin! Ohhh it sounds like they "hate" you soooo much too!!

Thanks for that about the food info Stormie, she has always been a fussy eater so I dont have to change that much. I am more worried about the grass allergies, living on an old dairy farm she comes in contact most days. But that what the injections are for, just hope they work. I am so glad you guys are doing it at the same time as me.!

Thanks Pandii, the shop only runs to normal stock, not the really exotic. Will try Bendigo though over the weekend. Sounds like you are all trying to stir Jj.

Hi Everyone, Pandii, I am so sorry about Ty. I would have loved to meet him. Havent been on much, struggling with flu/cold, had one then got T&T one after that. Its a shame I am going away over the weekend it would have been good up with those I know and meet those I dont. One day. Anyone know of anywhere locally that sells meat like goat or camel. Just had SWF tested and she is allergic to lamb and roo and a whole long list of over things and doesnt particularly like beef. Want to try some different things Will there be pictures from the weekend????????

Okay got the list. Interesting reading, she is borderline for 6 and positive for 16. Positive for Ryegrass, Bluegrass, Yorkshire Fog, Bermuda, Dock, English Plantin, Wall Pellitory, Scale Mix, Elm, Meleleuca, Willow Eucalyptus. Fungi include aspergillus, penicillium, curvularia, candida albicans. Foods include horse, eggs, lamb, oatmeal, tomatoe, peas. Borderline for grass bahia, careless weed, maple tree. Moulds nigrospora. Dust mites, Kangaroo meat and tobacco smoke. Just under borderline are grass vernal, bluegrass. Fungi rhizopus. CAT EPIDERMALS!!!! (she plays with him all the time), Beef, Wheat, Orris root, orlon/nylon/rayon, cockroach, staph and lastly Malassezia. With just under its only 10 or less (ie 140-150) before it does become borderline. Think little SWF has a few issues. Now to wait for the injections and change diet and what she sleeps on, and I suppose I will have to clean the house more often.

Hopefully the injections were in the inital price, I hope so. If not I will just go get an additional job for a while. Feeding outside for my guys wont work, the feral cats around here are bigger than the Jack. I tend not to take any food out side. Old farm house, outside laundry that type of set up. Though i have enough rooms to lock one in each. I am nasty he he. Will sort it out. SWF is a fussy little eater, has gone for 2 days without eating as she wouldnt touch the dog biscuits or anything else. So will give her beef mince as I know she will eat it. I am probably a bad owner as none of mine will eat vegetables, they lick and suck all the other bits off and leave a mess. We will adjust! Sounds easy giving the injections, not like the horse, where it was a fist on the rump one two and three the needle went in and you attached the suringe. Still getting quesy though. Will let you know when it comes time.

Well the vet just rang me. Ohh boy is the white fluffy in trouble. Over the phone she gave me a quick break down of what her blood work showed she is allergic too. Starting with horse meat (could never do that any way), egg, lamb, oatmeal, tomato, peas and damn it she is borderline but high for kangaroo!. She is allergic to a long list of grasses too and I will get the list tomorrow. Now have to work out how I am going to feed them (all four) without 2 getting the SWF food, and the SWF getting the rest of the food. Its all fun. Will take a couple of weeks to get the injections ready. FTPO you will have to let me know how you go with giving the injections. I am fine with giving them to horses and cows but little things that cry and tell you that it hurts is going to be a different story.
-
I am so sorry to hear this Pandii! My heart goes out to you and your family.
-
Thanks for that info, I am not worried about the time just forgot to ask how long it took. Yes the cat has allergies but its to almost all foods but it is my SWF that is being tested. She has gotten worse every year and this year I finally bit the bullet after reading some good things on here over the past year. She gets worse every winter, which i put down to wet feet and direct contact with the skin. But who knows exactly. Its just one of those things.
-
I am loving this thread, its great to see other people going through the same thing. Terrible arnt I. As for allergies, yep I have them too. Pollen, dust mites and horses (rode them all my younger years though), and then there is all the food allergies, just like the cat. Sorry to hear that you cant give the injections yourself. Have you got a neighbour that you trust enough? Or could you just get an epi pen to have next to you when you do it just in case? How long does it usually take for you to get back the results from having the blood taken, I forgot to ask the vet.
-
I do hope it helps though she is the least of my worries with allergies. The cat who has severe reaction to most foods (inability to digest proteins or something like that), is now showing possible signs of allergic reactions to the limited food he can eat. Want to swap a cat for a while anyone???? The old saying "Some mothers do have them" is sooo starting to apply here.

Hi Tez!! Seeing I was asked lots, pictures please, pretty please!! Do I hear you about muddy dogs (and cat!) Pandii.!! I love the new place but ..........I have a dam that is surrounded by a huge cow paddaock, and when walking tonight (only a short one) long haired dog decided tonight was the best time for a quick swim, followed by a roll in the cow paddock (not sure if its mud or not) and then wants to sit on the knee at home, cause fluffy is cold. Why??? Its raining and blowing a gale and dark, why go for a swim?? Now fluffy smells and has strange patches, will have to wash and blow dry.............sigh the joy of long hair!
