Hey you guys, any one out there know of someone that can look after a dog friendly cat for a short time. Owner will help with all costs. Her lined up option has fallen through and she has to be out of the house this Friday. Have posted in General but just thought I would see if there was anyone local.

Arthritis In Kelpie X - 13 Yrs Old
Munchin replied to MsKatie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Pain killers if all else fails. They have saved my 14yr old boy -
My vet put my 14yr old whippet/heeler on Tramal (human form) for his arthritis. It has been the best thing ever for him. Its a long acting pain killer. We put him on that as the vet seems to think that with his history that he would have less stomach upsets on tramal than metacam, as he will be on it for the rest of his life. The tramal has had no side effects and seems to last longer than the metacam that i give the Jack. And its a cheaper, and if you get the vets to write a script you can get it from the chemist (price difference vets $31 for 20tables, chemist $22 for 40tablets). I did talk to my chemist before I took the script in. The 14yr old Jack is on daily metacam for her arthritis she has been on it for over 2 yrs now. I just up her dose for a few days if she over does it but only weighing 5kg a bottle last ages. Have a chat to the vet about alternative options as they are out there, you just have to find a vet that is willing to think of other ideas. Good luck

Glad to here all is okay and I totally understand everything you have just been through. I have just been through the same thing, my boy was 14. He had to have his skin cancers removed for the second time, spend alot of time on DOL talking it through with very supportive members. They gave me the courage to have it done, especially when you here of a 19 year old having eye surgery!! I had reservations about doing it as well, but glad I did it now. He may live a bit or long time but either way he has had as many lumps removed as they could find and did he teeth while he was under. His quality of life is improved, so for me that out weights the risks. I may have to consider this again in the future but if you trust your vets and have a good discussion about the pre blood works, drip before and during and what they use, then the chances are as good as any of us going under when we are the same age.

Thanks for the offerTLC, but as usual for me I am working on Sunday, 7-12ish. And as out of town I probably wouldnt make it unitl after 1.00 but will get there one day. Have sent you another PM Jerojath. So want to meet the rest of you guys, Tanya tells me all about the walks, sounds like so much fun!!
-
That soo sucks, Jerojath!! Have sent you a PM. Hi everyone else!! Did look for you TLC the other day when I was in Bunnings but there was only guys there. Have holidays soon so maybe able to go for a walk through the week. Will get pram and stick the oldies in it if i have too!
-
Hi Everyone (and the new guys too) I am still around and so are the guys too. Oldies not coping with the cold well, so very little walking happening. Though fluffy keeps swimming in the dam. Will try to catch up on weekend soon. And thanks Jerojath, did have a look at your recommendation. Will probably go through Animal Aid. They will rehome and keep and eye on them for the life of them, so no kennels at all. And whats all this drinking that I keep reading about!!! Hi TLC, sorry you got in before i Finished. Well i am going home, had enough of today.

Don't Think It's Poisoning, Do You?
Munchin replied to suezija's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The way you described how he was found was very similar to what my boy was like with his first pancreatitis (sp) attack. He was all hunched up and wouldnt sit or lay down, just looked all together uncomfortable and he was shaking all over. My first thought was poison but the vet said it was pancreatitis. Could be worth looking into if you are sure that they didnt get bait. -
Well we have started, last Monday to be exact. Poppy is coping better than me with the injections. Would so rather do horses and cows than small little things. The first injection (.1ml) went well at the vets no real problems until the next day liquid poop, that had a strange sweet smell. Dose of lactobac powder from vets fixed that. Next .2ml was really flat 1hr after and the gurgling sounds in her stomach. Dosed her again with the powder and no running stuff. 3rd injection .4ml, she was just flat, 1 hr after with a runny clear nose but fine the next morning. .6ml nothing, she was fine. The .8ml last night i had issues with as I could feel it going under her skin and she has two needles with .8ml. Compared to you guys we are cruising along with the injections. No major reactions, touch wood. All mine have been 2 days apart and this doesnt change for another 4 injections, where the fourth is 5 days apart. Then onto the next vial. Poppy has not chewed her feet in the last few days which is surprising as she has been swimming in the dam and in running creeks through the paddocks. This usually triggers her to go nuts in front of the fire at night and on the bed at night. One other thing I have noticed and really concentrated on this morning, the gunk that has always been in her eyes daily, the amount is smaller. So maybe results............. or maybe me being really well ...hopeful?? So I will continue on giving the injections and feeling so guilty for doing to her, though she doesnt care as she gets treats after.

I am in, Zak has got his stitches out so he can get wet now! Only thing is you will have to text (dial up not working) me if it Sat any time or Sun after noon.
-
As far as I know the bloods were sent to America and I was given the details for the Spot test. Will have a look at who did the vials when I get home tonight and who the booklet for all the injection details is from. Maybe the vets have a contact?? Also possibility that the vets have a done me a good deal, with what I have spent there in the last 6 months. But after the prices some of you guys are paying I am not going to say a thing. Its great to read how the rest of you guys are going, gives me ideas of what to possibly expect! Thanks
-
Well we have started. First injection last night. Or should I say two, one out of each bottle. No problems with the injection except she wouldnt talk to the vet after. At home she was a bit subdued and was just off colour, not herself, but otherwise good. This morning its like nothing every happened. Ran around stupid like normal. Had a good chat to the vet while we killed out hour of observations. My vet spent time in a specialist clinic in England where she worked with a dermatologist for a few years. She is confident that my girl should respond to the injections but worse case my need monthly ones after for a while, she doesnt remember any dog not improving at all. So its all fingers crossed for a good result and lots of injections. If I remember correctly the whole thing, blood tests and the 6 bottles (vials, 3 of each concentration, red blue and green) cost me all up $540 with the only extra being for the needles.

My boy had lumps removed off both of his eyelids. They healed really well and has not had any problems since then. He has developed more (he is 14) on the inside of the eyelids that can be taken off due to the location and resulting lack of skin (was a while agoe when vet explained) if they tried, but even though they irrate him, more in the hot and dry weather, I have managed it well with regular eye drops used once daily or twice if he needs it. The eyes weep but he doesnt rub them and he is cruzing along fine.

We start our injections on Monday. Fluffy one has to stay there for an hr after the injection in case of a reaction. My question is now, how often do the bad reactions occur and will a shot of adrenalin fix it. Murphys law with my lot, if it shouldnt happen it does, if can go wrong it does and in particular with this one, she never does things by halves. I still love her though!!

How funny is that TLC, seeing more idiots. I dont know either, whether we get cranky or the world is just producing more idiots. I love the round about here, in the last week I have has so many near misses. Idiots!!!! Dont look and just drive straight through, or the best one............... Its 7.30 at night on a crest (thats blind) on a single lane road (out the front of me), car is in the middle of road (mine, hazards flashing and lights on high beam shining on the cows on the road (waiting for help I am) and the idiots of the world, dont slow down and glare at me from their cars, and no stops to help. Yep idiots. The heifers pushed the fence as the current got cut, thank hevens for fluffy dog who wouldnt come in and kept barking until I went to look. Think I have had my vent for tonight. Zak's okay just had to have his skin cancers all chopped off and as he was under any they found theygot rid off. They were near the bleeding stage so they had to come off. He is doing okay but looks funny and wont stay quite! You might have to bring your guys out here for a run, no idiots lots of space and smell and we can avoid the cows. Only thing is they will end up dirty. Might try for bigish walk next week if the weather stays this good. Will try and keep track of whats going on.
-
I am still around, rann into TLC the other day at work. Just been busy and now work on Sundays till lunchtime. Wont be walking for a week or so, Zak cover in stitches and been told to keep him quite. Funny Saw the feral cat tonight and he went to take off at high speed. Got him and lost Poppy to it, down the cow track into the hay shed... grrrr. Fluffy dog and hay, more fun. Dont think T&T can walk either, Bruno injured again. Get over eating the onions and blind, gets KC, and now possible muscle tear. (sorry if you reading this T&T). Thinks she said no walking for week. But we ALL have to go and gate crash Tenties new house and christen it.

Hi Pandi, Try not to worry., though its easier said than done. I have just been there literally on Friday. I have to have all Zaks cut off (skin cancers, they were starting to scab and now he lookes like he has had a tummy tuck with all the stitches), but the other lumps the vet wasnt worried about. I had them cut off about 4years ago after finding like what you described and it turned out to be just a fatty thingy. There was one that was harder and they sent it off for testing and turned out to be nothing to worry about. Thinking of you.

Experiences With Anthestics In Older Dogs
Munchin replied to Munchin's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Its all good The vet just rang. He is awake!!!! All good. Sounds like he had heaps removed and they even found ones I didnt know about, after they shaved him. They couldnt tell me how many they cut off, they lost count. They even pulled his first tooth, not bad for 14yrs. I can get him after work today. So I will find out how funny he looks then. Thanks for everyone support!
