  1. Great photograph! I could not swear to cause though, I also would get it checked out.
  2. Presuming it is a hot spot clip beyond the edges if possible, malaseb following normal instructions works well and plenty of fresh air (elizabethan collar would help). I would however be careful presuming diagnosis if you are not certain. Grass seed can appear the same way for example.
  3. There are quite a few believed safe to use in pregnant animals, I would guess some with more testing than others, some may also show anecdotally to not be known to cause problems. Your vet should be able to recommend a suitable antibiotic depending on the nature of the problem.
  4. If all else fails get an experienced person to demonstrate and have a practice yourself. Once you have the technique it is usually not difficult and it makes things so much easier for future treatments. I am also a big believer in teaching pups to take tablets, probably because it is sometimes my hand in a strange dogs mouth Seriously though it can reduce stress on both of you in the event of future illness if tableting is a known and non threatening event.
  5. Well we just used to chuck 'em on Acidurin which was a nuisance for owners having to give daily medication. If you are going to try a home diet make sure you encourage lots of drinking to lower urine concentration. Hills should not be expensive if it is only fed to one cat, I generally find 1 bag (approx $20) lasts me 4-5 weeks depending on the cat.
  6. I can't help with the skin condition but I suggest another vet check with the new knowledge on drinking/weeing. Diabetes and Kidney Disease need to be ruled out asap. As a urine sample is the first step checking for either condition take a sample with you, makes it much easier.
  7. That was my favourite part, do you mean it's not true? * sob*
  8. I worked at a processing plant for a short time and unfortunately there are lots of unexpected goodies going into the mincer. I dropped a knife on the wrong belt once, it made a heck of a noise but the mincer got it in the end! While some whole pieces and meat go in it was mostly fat and bone. Undersized were not killed. It was pretty foul (no pun intended) seeing what was dropped in on a busy day. I used to feed chicken mince but after seeing first hand what goes in for pet supply - no way.
  9. I brush one of my dogs teeth - just one side as she has some old injury/surgery problems and won't chew on her blind side. Once she worked out was it was all about she learned to love it and comes running when the brush comes out. That may also be because it is the most attention she gets
  10. Dear lord I hope not, that would mean all those little ones I helped after being born by caesar would have been wondering why they had two mummies :D
  11. IBD is not uncommon in animals, maybe this is what the vet means. Try this information http://www.petlvr.com/blog/2005/11/colitis...he-dog-and-cat/
  12. I would crate or do whatever else needed to keep her quiet. It is short term and is important to avoid more complications. Distract her with bones, toys, treat balls or whatever it takes. I hope the path results are non cancerous!
  13. What yoghurt do you use? I mainly give our dogs whatever we haven't eaten ourselves from the fridge - they don't care what it is! Is there anything in particular you recommend for this situation? Easi Yo as it is cheap, convenient and I am sure of the cultures still being 'live'. It has a good website and there was a thread on it recently also.
  14. Hope everything is OK, was the vet aware of the Nystagmus (eye movement) when you spoke? While it can be associated with vestibular it is wise to be very cautious as it is commonly seen with brain injury also.
  15. He doesn't look too bad IMHO compared to some of the fosters coming in, sad but true. I also would feed as you described with an increased volume to allow for adding weight. I feed yoghurt daily, which is the only real difference in your plan. Good luck with him, he looks a real sweetie and I bet he is a stunner in a few weeks!
  16. From a vet nurses point of view it is fine, she is well old enough to be a low surgical risk and convenience would be a good enough reason to bring it forward from the traditional 6 months.
  17. Great news, bet she is relieved too! I hope the path comes back with some simple answers
  18. FNA or fine needle aspirate looks at the cells in the lump (fat, pus etc) and can indicate a potential problem or cause. Initial test is 'in house' further samples can be sent to a pathology lab if necessary. A biopsy is recommended if FNA gives any cause for concern.
  19. I use the same techniques Scarlet suggested. Puppies are on a lead when in the cats territory until they learn suitable manners, it works much better than holding and trying to force a cat to acquiesce - cats never give in! We are using the crate technique atm for an adult dog recently introduced to the household with a high prey drive and insatiable curiosity for cats. He is finally learning (I hope) to look but not lunge. Be patient, it does take a little time to learn cat ettiquette.
  20. I would continue with the Betadine, clean daily. The bandage is to keep the dog from worrying the stub, keep it clean and in the case of toe nails particularly, to protect against discomfort when walking. I would bandage for a few days until pain decreases but several hours supervised 'air' time would help. Make sure all dressings are clean and dry and that the leg/foot is completely dry before redressing. Pain wise, vet only I'm afraid but in the meantime the bandage will hopefully help. With dietary aid to healing I am not sure, my personal feeling is if you are already feeding a good quality diet supplements are unlikley to help with a minor injury. If at any time the nail does not seem to be healing, appears swollen, reddended or starts to go spongy see a vet immediately.
  21. The pelvic bones protruding is not ideal. Body condition score as used by a lot of vets is found at the address below. http://www.purina.com/dogs/health/bodycondition.aspx
  22. Capstar is also a good idea to have available to kill mature fleas in the event your pup picks up a traveller. Works quickly and relatively cheap.
  23. Sorry can't help much, they do look like warts which can be quite common especially in older dogs. If you want to be safe get them checked out by a vet.
  24. I agree, it is an airborne disease and is extremely contagious. Not the kennels fault.
  25. I use Aloveen too. I use about enough to cover a 20c piece for my Dobe size dog. It was great for the ferrets when we had 'em too.
