How Do I Stop My Puppy Piddling At The Back Door?
lucknow replied to monkeytrunks's topic in Puppy Chat
I use bi carb powder to help remove the odour of cat urine, goes great in my shoes too! Vets and pet suppliers use 'urine off' or similiar products, the claim is that they remove the lingering odours that we cannot smell which would attract offenders back again. -
This may help but unfortunately all the information is pretty generalised and likely repeats what your vet has already told you. http://www.vetspecialists.co.uk/06_Animal_...Insulinoma.html I have seen a few dogs diagnosed but we always referred out to treat so can't pass on anything helpful there sorry. Best advice I can give atm is to write down all questions as they occur to you and take them with you when you go back to the vet. While you are there again write down all information given - it is much too hard to be able to process everything said and something very important may be overlooked. Keep going back to your vet with any and all questions if necessary until you are able to make an informed decision re treatment. Good luck

If you are going to try this (and I think it is a good idea) make sure the cultures are 'live' and that the yoghurt is set in it's own pot within 3 weeks max of manufactur. I make Easi Yo so the cultures are still live or get 'Innerhealth' from the naturopath.

Initially make sure she does not have fleas, Sentinel does not kill fleas, it only stops the breeding cycle so anything you put into place won't work effectively if they are present... Get her checked by a vet, it is likely that Malaseb is going to be recommended but it can be terrible if used inappropriately (and make sure you follow instructions and use gloves) If no fleas are present get her off the flea shampoo, it is unnecessary chemicals and could be contributing to the problem, frequent wshhing strips the oils from the coat and results in scurf... Add some Omega 3/6 supplements to the diet, it will (unless an allergy) only help with a nice coat and healthy skin DO NOT use Velvet Soap - it is not intended for dogs and will only exacerbate the problem Get her on a premium diet

Hills ID is a basic bland dog food designed to not irritate the stomach/intestines. It is often used post gastro etc and has lots of fillers such as rice. I am a very bad person for suggesting this (as it is an overused product) but I often have an excellent result with Scourban. It is usually available from large animal vets on prescription. Brilliant stuff especially as you have already ruled out a lot of nasties.

Luxating Patella - Need Some Information
lucknow replied to Mollyrulz's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I find sedation can be effective for small periods of time but it depends on the patient, all respond differently. Mine sleep for about 8 hours but they are placid relaxed dogs, it is likely to be very different for a livewire like your girl. When we sedate at work (usually out of desperation) it often only gives 2-3 hours of relief .I would speak to a vet re babysitting after surgery at the clinic whilem you are out if necessary. Vets are often very reasonable in their fees for this type of thing, they maalso be able to point you in the direction of anyone else local that would be able to help. friends can also be great as well. In the meantime crate train her and try to get her accostomed to the idea of spending increasing periods of time relatively still with toys or chews. This may sound cruel but immediately post surgery discomfort often helps restrict activity, it is often later that the problems start. -
My preference is for Eukanuba, coats, stool quality and vitality are best for my dogs. I often have to feed Supercoat for financial reasons and find it fine, just not as splendid as euk.

Luxating Patella - Need Some Information
lucknow replied to Mollyrulz's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If you are not certain of the vets diagnosis and recommendation you need to see another vet and get a 2nd opinion. Vets often recommend specialists these days due to the litigation issues - if the results are not picture perfect then their decisions may be questioned therefore they get the 'experts' in. I am not an expert but have seen this frequently in young dogs as well as old, it is congenital not an age related problem. -
How Do I Stop My Puppy Piddling At The Back Door?

When you say deterrent stuff did you use an enzymatic cleaner? -
Sorry, all I know is that it is not common and recommended treatment is corticosteroids and maybe diazepam in the short term. As cause is speculative at best it is recommended not to breed from the dog(if still entire).

I believe the average water requirements are 40-60mls/kg/day but this is obviously a generalisation dependant on many factors including activity, health status, type of food, etc. Your dog drinks when he feels thirsty and his needs appear constant. I would be more concerned if there were a noticeable increase rather than a dog that appears to drink a small amount. Maybe he's a water saver?

I have one of these and it took a bit of practise to perfect the technique but after that it appears reliable. A vet I know has used the professional model and absolutely loved it. Well worth the price for me as it is not much more that a hypothermic speed read digital.

I agree, the risk is to animals that are being exposed for the first time to disease and virus. Owners that do this invariably don't seem to understand the risks. Socialisation is a tricky one, advice I generally give is to socialise at puppy school, with gentle vaccinated dgos owned by friends, and when they really do feel they have to get out in public to avoid high risk areas (so stay off grass, avoid dog parks, don't put your pup down in the crowded vet clinic!).

You need to let her learn to settle herself when you are not in the room or around her. Keep on as you are making it comfortable and nice, put her in and leave the room. The reward for being quiet is what she has in her crate to enjoy when she settles. Crate training sets her up for more advanced lessons as and when you see fit but is one of the first things she will associate with you being the boss and not her.

Homeopathic Vaccines
lucknow replied to First Time Puppy Owner's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
November could coincide with the 'allergy season' for your dog, and unless I did my maths wrong was nowhere near the time the puppy vacc's were given? Are you positive that there are no fleas (since you said you flea treated the yard even). Have you had the skin checked since the flare up, at the very least your vet should be able to prescribe something to alleviate symptoms while you search for a cause. -
Sharing Advantix Between Animals
lucknow replied to HigginsCrew's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
You would need to buy the 10-25kg size and measure accordingly ( I gave volume/weight in an earlier post but it basically works out 0.1ml/kg). All the spot on medications have a very high safety threshold but giving extra does not mean it will work better, if you are giving a 'theraputic' dose it will not increase efficacy, it will just be wastage. -
Bromine Sanitiser... Used In Pools Etc
lucknow replied to Alison's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Simply put anything you pick is capable of causing allergic symptoms, just depends on the animal. Pool cleansers are notorious, I would think the Bromine is high on the list of suspects. -
Great, he is one tough dog!

I feed Supercoat which I buy from a produce store as it works out so much cheaper than supermarkets. It is good quality for the price, a nice mid range food and my dogs do very well on it. I think it is about $40/18kg.

I agree but anyone doing this is well advised to check their dog product is safe for cats if they will be getting a dose (obviously advantage is). Some brands have slightly different ingredients for cats and dogs - dog component can be highly toxic to cats. -
If your dog tears a Cruciate Ligament surgical repair is essential, it is a very painful debilatating condition. The luxating patella is something that many dogs live with successfully and arthritis can be a side effect of this. I would think it wise to seek a second opinion or see a specialist if your dog is being diagnosed with arthritis at such a young age.

Pain In Her Hips / Back Legs
lucknow replied to jaegertheweim's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Sorry to hear your girl is not feeling so happy... I am not au fait with the breed but can say that in hindsight arthritis generally has some warning signs such as slowing down, reluctance to jump, slower to rise etc. It sounds quite possible that she is sore for either another reason or a combination of more than one. Since you were out when she became sore there is no way to know if she aggravated a pre-existing condition with dog silliness While you are waiting to see the vet absolutely no exercise, treat her as you would if you were sore and TLC until you know further. ETA if it cool at night wheat bags/hot water bottles etc may help alleviate discomfort -
Hills make a 'cancer' diet intended to starve the neoplasia. If you don't want to use their food the research or findings are usually pretty accessible via google and easy to put into practice in the home environment.

Sharing Advantix Between Animals

It is possible and very ok BUT not recommended by the manufacturer. If one of your dogs has a problem there will be no come back as it will be 'off label' use. Under 4kg 0.4 ml 4-10kg1.0 ml 10-25kg 2.5 ml 25-40kg 4ml >40kg 2 x 4 ml. to accurately dose a needle and syringe woule be very handy. Under dosing would result in ineffective control, overdosing is generally safe but you will have no recourse if things go wrong.
