  1. Hi All, First of all the DPI didnt call back - i did speak to a live person who assured me the appropriate person would contact me. I called back and was assured someone would contact me......im sure you can imagine the run around i got, i can only assume its what they do to fob people off. Went back to chermside cos i couldnt stop thinking about it. the dogs were gone. I asked the girl if the two tiny dogs id seen a few days earlier - she said no they hadnt been sold, but didnt know what had happened. i can only assume (fingers crossed) that the manager/owner had a sudden case of the guilts and have taken them home for a few week? I dont know.....but as others have said, they wernt there. thank you to all who supported me,offered information and showed interest. im still learning about all of this, but like all of you, it breaks my heart. I will step up next time, slightly more informed but just as determind! Cheers, Jacqui
  2. update : waiting for the dpi to call me back....
  3. ok, that code of practice is by the DPI - i will call them first thing in the morning to to discuss, and organise a course of action....if any........*fingers crossed*
  4. I cannot understand why there is no law on this....surely an animal reared by its mother to at least.....oh to hell with it - WHY is it legal in the first place for the animals to be sold in a shop anyway......*grrrrr*
  5. Hi Everyone, I went to a funeral today, so there is a chance I am overly emotional....however...... I stopped off a Chermside Shopping Center afterwards.I generally only buy Charlies' bits and pieces online as a rule (time saving) but I was there so I popped in to the pet shop there. I didnt get past the front window. There in the front were 3 of the tiniest puppies I have ever seen. Their eyes were not openproperly, barely moving.....just so tiny. I asked the young girl (and i realise now i was quite sharp) how old they were and she said they were 6 weeks old..... I left immediatly. I was going to lose it in there if I stayed there, I was already quite emotional... I called the RSPCA who advised me that unfortunantly there is nothing in the legislation that stops a place like that selling a pup that young (i swear they are younger). They told me they werent able to send an Inspector out.... and i know how busy they are, I know its not like a puppymill.....I just didnt know who else to call really. Who do you call? My request to anyone who is local to Chermside ( i am not, i was only there for the funeral - am quite a long way away) if you are at the shopping center tomorrow, please pop in and have a look at these puppies and if they seem unwell or distressed in any way either call the rspca, or PM me so I can. Im really distressed about what i saw today........ Thank You, Jacqui
  6. and what is it??? im totally curious now...
  7. Quick question for my knowledge - why non amonia? im sorry if its obvious, but im going to go home and check my products - im concerned mine are amonia based - may answer a few of my own toilet training issues! Thanks Jacqui
  8. No idea what it is but please - can you find another vet before your regular one comes back? An emergency vet or something? Maybe really needs to get looked at asap? Maybe your breeder knows of one you could go to? I could be over- reacting of course, i really have no experiance other than my own puppy!! Best wishes for your pup.......
  9. noooo We cannot even access the back door from the front (long story, inclusive of wheelbarrows, broken fences and a very very strong sturdy gate.... Is there someway to encourage him to wee whilst we our out....thats kinda silly isnt it - cant encourage if we are not there *sigh* im just worried that one day we will get caught away for a l onger period of time and he willg et a bladder infection or something ;)
  10. yes, when we get home he is always awake, so if he was asleep the key in the door would have woken him (always does, without fail). He does generally take himself outside when we are home, we do still have the occasional accident. (thank you for ur help with this poodlefan, i really appreciate it!)
  11. Feeling pretty dumb....good point. I guess it feels like he is busting to go everytime we get home that we have assumed he is holding it.......I feel a little silly!!!
  12. Hi team, I have come to realise that Charlie only wees when we are home...which means he holds on until we come home....which means its kinda worrying. We never leave him home alone for too long though.....2 - 5hrs. Does anyone else's pup do this? When we get home we go outside with him and wait til he wees, or else if we get home and have to go straight to the toilet ourself we come out and he has wee'd on the tiles inside. He has access to inside and outside when we are gone. We feel kinda baffled as 99% of the time he goes outside when we are home, just when we go out it all goes a little crazy. He is 7 month male beagle desexed. Thanks Jacqui
  13. THey are beautiful, your tri girl reminds me of charlie when he was smaller. I am so happy for you - ill head your way when the time comes for us to get a second beagle if you're breeding then :-) *** we dont show though, just have a forever home full of love and cuddles :-)

    Beagle

QUESTIONS 1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) We are first time beagle owners so I can only talk from our experiance!! 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? See Huskis' reply, its disgustingly informative 3. How common is it in Australia? There are only 2 other beagles down at our local dog park, but aside from that, I feel like everyone I know knows someone else with a Beagle - and why not, they are incredible! 4. What is the average lifespan? I've been told 10 - 15 years..... 5. What is the general temperament/personality? Happy, playful, cuddly, mischeivous, stubborn when paired with being on a scent/involved with food, very sociable, great with kids, intelligent. Very very intelligent. They are pack animals. They want to be with you - as much as possible.... 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? Charlie wants to play...if he has a big play he doesnt need a walk. We walk at night a fair bit and he always enjoys it, but doesnt appear to go crazy without it. There is always someone to play with and things to stimulate him so maybe thats why it's not dire? Not sure - but he always get some sort of one on one interaction in a exercisy/stimulating way, every day. 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? As long as you are committed. We dog sat a Boston Terrier for over a years or so for friends of ours so we are not really first time dog owners but we kinda feel we are. We were committed to Charlie before we even got him so there was no question as to whether or not we could cope, we just would, come hell or high water!! We struggled a little with training, still do sometimes, but we have had a behaviourist out to us to assist, and we dedicate alot of time to Charlie and do everything we can to learn more techniques. I don't feel that Charlie is majorly high maitenance though, personally. We will get another Beagle in the next few years and we have no concerns about that. 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? Charlie is the only dog we have and he seems fine with that. He is never alone for a long period of time though, there is always people around, he has doggie mates to play with....I can see that if he was left on his own for a very long time, or he was bored, he has the capacity to be mischevious/destructive. 9. How much grooming is required? He does shed more than I thought he would but its no problem, i brush his coat once or twice a week, a bath once a month to once a fortnight depending on what he needs.... 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? Charlie is so intuitive - with my elderly grandma he sits quietly with her, and she strokes him and he doesnt move.....its lovely. With babies, charlie just wants to see them once (to know whats going on) then he leaves them alone, he is just not interested.....Plays nicely with the younger ones, but we never leave them unsupervised. I dont think anything would ever happen, but I jusst wont leave them regardless. 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? Ear infections cos their ears are long and floppy and trap dirt and moisture. Whever you bath them ensure you wipe the ear well to dry it as best as possible. Obesity! Charlie loves food. Alot. Left to his own devices, I dont think he would ever stop eating. 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) Hip Scores. Can't really remember what its meant to be but its meant to be about the parents hip scores to let the buyer know that there is a less of a chance for hip dysplacia/arthritus..... I think? Please correct me if Im wrong. But thats for all dogs, not just beagles. Make sure you get papers. And refer to what Huski wrote cos again, soooo much knowlege there If there is something I've written Im open to PMs or responses. As Ive said, we are new in general to dogs and the breed, so I'm keen to keep learning
  15. Hi again, Just bumping this cos its kinda related. Charlies' ear infection has come back in one ear only. We are continuing to clean it out with the cleaning drops but have no more medicated drops - back to the vet! Are these things reoccuring like this - its like he has had no relief in nearly a month I feel so awful for him - he is constantly scratching his ear Thanks All, Jacqui
  16. Thanks everyone, The 2 times i tried Charlie with Greenies he got explosive diarreah. There is no way I'll ever get them again! I know they work well with some people but I just wont go there - twice cant be just a coincidence. Nekhbet i definitly plan on moving to chicken wings, and will do some investigations on turkey necks and lamb flaps. Definitly learning alot here! When Charlie has any raw meat or bones he is banished outside til its *over* or *buried* not on my carpet!!!! Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your responses!!! Jacqui
  17. Whoops! thanks everyone - Charlie is a Beagle :-)
  18. Hi all, Slowly introducing some raw food to Charlies' diet. I purchased some chicken necks, have bagged and frozed down. Kept just one out for Charlie to see how he went.....he treated it like a bone. I put it in his bowl, and he picked it up and trotted off with it in his mouth to naw on etc. Is this ok? Am i meant to cut them up into bite size pieces? I have bagged them into approx 3 per bag....is this enough for a meal? Or should i give something else with it? Currently feed him 2 x's a day...... FYI Charlie is a beautiful desexed male 6 month old puppy. Thank you everyone for your thoughts, opinions and ideas!! Jacqui
  19. Charlie is a beagle, just shy on 6 months. The vets say he is in great condition weight wise, looking just how he should be, really healthy (bar the ear infection). Ill check out the doggie chiro. When the vet looked at his hip, she pulled/stretched his leg a few times and we could see there was discomfort. Im hoping its nothing, but we are waiting to get the xrays for a few weeks now. Doesnt matter re. health insurance, it is on his file that it was looked at today, and thats within the 30 days - Our cover requests all files from begining of ownership on first claim. Thanks you !
  20. hi all. kinda feeling down now; went to vet. no ringworm (used light). Ear infection (which kinda knew about which was another reason we went to the vet). Got vet to look at charlies hips/legs cos ive said from day one that he runs funny.... He now needs xray etc to determind whether or not he has hip dysplacia (spelling). Got home and had a look at our cover and we are still in the 30 day waiting period. My poor little puppy We will do everything we can for him of course, with or without cover, but does anyone have any stories or experiances here? I dont know what this really is, what to expect...... Thanks, Sad puppy mummy of sad puppy, Jacqui
