2 Big Staffies Moving In Next Door
dee lee replied to dreamelicious's topic in General Dog Discussion
As are her concerns about aggression. It has been mentioned on here more than once before, by SBT breeders and experts, that as a breed they can have a tendency to DA. Not all do, but, as has also been mentioned, they are definitely overbred by BYB with no concern for temperament. Added to a common breed tendency not to like other dogs (mentioned on many breed websites), if a fight is started, a SBT will definitely finish it. I too, from past experience, am wary of any bull breeds I come across that are unknown to me when out walking my GR. I watch closely and avoid any breed that could badly hurt/kill my dog if they decided to attack her. If I don't know the dog, its always a risk- its just happens that its a higher risk with a SBT. Here's hoping the OP has a well bred, well socialised, well trained lovely pair of SBTs move in. I currently have a boot ready each time I leave my house, for the rabid SWF that lives next door. I'm not so worried about it hurting my dog though. -
I adore the look of these lovely dogs. Adoublej and Monah, can you tell me a bit about Spinones (they arent in dogbreeds 101 )? How big do they grow? Do they shed? What kind of temperaments do they have? How hard are they to get? Any downsides? I have always admired yours Monah- he is gorgeous!

SHE DID IT!!! ;) Hooray!! I was going to take a photo of how high the tailgate is and thought I'd give it another shot. I pulled out the big guns this time & got the kids in there to entice her- she LOVES the kids. She was a bit uncertain, and I didn't think she'd make it, but then.... Up she jumped!! We tried it 3 times and all 3 were a success! She just doesn't like it much, she's scared, but I'm sure she'll get used to it. I'm so relieved. ;) And feeling a bit sheepish. (I still swear, it's really high though!!!)

I can see I am going to have to take another pic, that one does make it look very low. It was one I took just to show off the car. I tried again yesterday with some chicken and she was pretty keen to get up but just could not. Trust me, I'm not a pushover and she is a fit & healthy dog. She really can't do it and I don't blame her. Even the kids have to climb to get in. When I get a chance I'm going to head off in search of ramp materials. I'm sure I can whip one up. Til then she is my weight training!

I clean the spot with warm water, dab it dry, then apply betadine. Often. Until it clears. I imagine those who use curash would apply that instead of the betadine.

Oh BJ, I'm sorry but your post had me giggling, imagining all those scenarios! I shan't complain about Honey!! What a funny dog. Dancingbcs, I'll give it another shot & try to teach her to jump- I'd rather she could do it on her own than have to cart around ramps or stools. I'm not overly optimistic though. :p

Yeah, I'm actually pretty happy that she is not such a pushover re food (though she normally loves the pigs ears). But it does get tricky when I'm trying to use food to help desensitize her & bribe her. However- I'm going to pull out the big guns & try BBQ chicken tomorrow. if that doesn't work, nothing will!

Oh GR, I have a confession... she is a broked Goldie... One rainy day I left her in the back of our old car with a pigs ear, went into a shop, came out and THE EAR HAD NOT BEEN TOUCHED!!!! :mad She also will not take ANY treats from anyone but my family! I know... I am so ashamed....

The pic is deceptive, it is really quite high- if she had her paws on it she'd be almost standing up, IYKWIM. I tried again today, thinking maybe I'd been a bit too lenient on her. But am still convinced its a big ask of my, not-a-great-contender-for-agility , goldie. It doesnt help that she dislikes cars so is not keen to get in anyway.
-
Its a Renault Koleos. I'm pretty certain its just too high for her, there's plenty of headroom. If she were a more agile breed, say like JulesP's Border Collies, she still would have to leap into the air to get up.
-
Ooops! Hey, just means they are BOTH beautiful.
-
Oh NOICE!!! Jules, Brock is gorgeous! :D I'm not sure Honey would be into stairs or boxes either. Hmm, actually I probably should test out a few things just in case! Knowing my luck I'll fork out for a ramp and she'll be terrified of it.
-
Thanks everyone. Ta! I was hoping you'd check in. :p Hmm, bit exxy. But I'll look for a plastic one or I could make my own. (or get the OH to work :D ) Til then I think I will try Mita and Greytmate's suggestions. Dont know why I didnt think of doing that already! The boot is filling up quickly with all sorts of crap so I'm not sure I could fit a box in there as well. Mumof3- She usually does go in the middle but the kids are getting too big and there's more room for her in the back when they are in the car.
-
Well we got our long awaited for new car and there is plenty of room in the back for Honey. Problem is it is a very high jump for a not so keen and not so agile young Goldie!! :D I've tried to encourage her, but to be honest, I don't think she will ever be able to do it. She can only just reach it on her hind legs. Picking her up is not easy for me (she weighs @27kgs- half my weight) so I'm interested to hear what solutions other people have for their dogs. And pics would be good if you have them. Here is the reluctant subject (pic is deceptive- the edge of the car is much higher than it looks here)

Stayz has a whole section for pet friendly holidays. You do have to check what the facilities are like though. They may be pet friendly, but not all are pet safe. We rented a place one year that had no fences! :D Luckily at the last minute we had decided not to take our dog. Also some only allow dogs outside. We are going to a beach on the north coast of NSW in 2 weeks- with a high-walled yard and 2 minutes walk to a dog friendly beach! I CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!!

Just a reminder that Advantix is highly toxic to cats so if you own a cat you should not use it. I no longer have a cat. Was thinking about the OP. :D

When we went away last year, I went to a vet and had a long chat about various products. I decided on the Proban for 2 reasons- 1. she was going to be swimming a lot so I wasn't keen to use a spray on product and 2. We have a cat and Advantix is highly toxic to cats. Giving her tablets every 48 hours (including several days prior to exposure to ticks) wasn't a problem for me. It was only for a couple of weeks.

Ruthless' collars and leads are beautiful!!! They are all handmade by Ruthless and her hubby. here's a link.

Interesting. How do you use the bicarb? I mostly use betadine and keep cleaning the spot until it clears. Honey's usually happen when she scratches from contact allergies. Monique89- Poor Snowy!!! Hopefully it wont take toooo long for the fur to grow back- when Honey lost fur on her back, above her tail we were able to "comb over" to disguise the baldness pretty quickly.

Another apple lover here. When we make fruit salad Honey gets all the apple offcuts. Actually she ate some mango this evening too.

I have to admit to not using a seatbelt/harness. My dog is car phobic and will only lie on the floor in the foot well, or in the back in the hatch. She never moves from where she lies- she is too nervous. I'm very confident that she is safely wedged in.

Unfortunately it can take months. I have found the coat doesnt return to normal until after the next seasonal coat growth. Our poor goldies and their delicate skin. I'm currently trying to get another allergy breakout under control. Eternal vigilance is what is needed.

Sadly, I agree. When my DA dog was just starting her "antisocial behaviour" she got into a couple of situations where she behaved like the SBTs in Lablover's story (a couple, because the first time I was told by a bull breed owner that she was just playing . 2nd time was the last ever. Luckily no damage. ). It was nigh on impossible to get near her, let alone get a hold of her, she was moving so fast, pulling and shaking the other dog. She was a thin, young staffy x up against a much larger boxer who was unable to get away from her. It took quite a while for me to get close enough to her and she was completely ignoring me- in the "zone". Luckily she was enjoying herself, not intent on killing or it would have all been over by then. :D When I did get hold of her all I could do was grab her by the collar and hold it up til she choked and let go of the other dogs' neck. She was never let off lead again.

I had something similar happen to me recently. I was at a cafe, Honey on lead under my table. I heard what sounded like a dog fight down the road, it stopped then I saw a large offlead dog trotting by itself down the foot path in our direction. It was being followed by a couple of dirtbags fruitlessly calling its name. When it got near us it noticed Honey, and moved towards us. I pushed a chair over at it and yelled at it which caused it to pause enough for the owners to catch up and drag it away, but a woman next to me glared at me and said "oh that poor dog!". Better for the dog to almost be hit by a chair than my dog bitten. ;) I've been in the same situation in the past with an onlead DA dog and an offlead "friendly" dog and it ended up with me on the ground between the two dogs trying to attack each other. Generally if an offlead dog shows any interest in my onlead dog, I pre-empt any interaction with a loud, forceful "SHOO". I'm not taking any chances if I don't know it.
