Erny,it is because of people like you that i continue to use sites like DOL for further learning. There has been MANY MANY people on here that can deter most. But your views are always honest, polite and level headed. You are straight to the point without being harsh. A trainer like this wins BIG POINTS IMO. I have nothing but respect for the work you do..and your open mindeness(is that a word lol).

Has Anyone Had To Amputate A Dogs Leg?
Mushaka replied to Mushaka's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanx SpottedDevil.. I would only ever amputate if i had taken every other path, but i also dont want to prolong the pain,if vets see no other option in the horizon other than waiting it out.. Does anyone know the ball park figure for this kind of suregery????? -
Has Anyone Had To Amputate A Dogs Leg?
Mushaka replied to Mushaka's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Showdog,..the vet is suprised the dog can even walk. He has multiple fractures in his pelvis. No amount of therapy is going to reallign it. If no vet has a suggestion as to what i can do,it just might be better to him to remove the source of the pain. Again, this would be a LAST resort. I mean seriously,as if i would chop off a leg willy nilly,..not to mention the cost involved. -
Has Anyone Had To Amputate A Dogs Leg?

I have thought about the shoes lol..But thought I'd look a goose...I will give them a go though! His nail wears so far down that it is contantly bleeding and the area around the nail is "open" in a sense. Lewis walks on three legs as it,so he wouldnt have to adjust to much, other than not having to hold the leg up constantly. His gait is causing the problem,so i doubt he would have pain once the leg was removed..I know its drastic and of course we would exhaust all other avenues before heading down either of the paths i mentioned. Indie is at the vets now being desexed so I might have a quick chat to the vet again about Lewis. I have had him on cortesone(spelling) and other things, but nothing is helping him. Hes Pelvis is too far out of whack, and its not the pelvis causing the pain, rather the affect it having on his walk, causing other issues. -
Has anyone here faced this? Im wondering,if so,what were the deciding factors? I ask this as Lewis before we rescued him,had been hit by a car. He has mulitple fractures in his pelvis, giving him an unusal gait. With this funny walking style,he is wearing down his nails to the pad on his hind left leg. Its causing him such discomfort, that he rarely uses this leg at all. It hngs limply under his belly. I have had him at two vets, the one at the rescue shelter, and my private vet. they both have said theres not much i can do,and they dont know what to do with him, other than leave it be for a time, and see if the pads harden with callous over time.We have had lewis for approx 4mths now.Would that be enough time? We are thinking of either of two options, having the claws removed,or amputation of the leg. Surley for him to be forever lifting and not using the foot,he must be in a fair bit of pain. What would others suggest I do? Does anyone kow the cost of surgery for either of these procedures?

Some UNI's do it free too i think. Your best bet from here on,is ask around for a good vet close to you and STiCK WITH HIM/HER. Theres not a chance I would take on so many dogs if it werent for the relationship I have with my vet. I have to drive past at least 5 or 6 vet surgeons to get to him. Its not about whos cheapest for me (even though Im povvo lol and i can hardly afford luxuries) its about having someone honest, and caring. Speaking of which,Indie is getting desexed today!... Ive got ALL the dogs on no food water for moral support...Once she's been dropped off ,i'll fill the other rumbly tummies. The only reason i can even afford desexing is,i paid lots of bits n pieces for my brother, who has a credit card,up to the value of desexing over a period of time. So now its D'Day,im whackin the surgery on his card..lol.. U gotta think ahead for these kinda things lol. Other things if emergencies, and sometimes just on a check up visit,if we need extras he just lets me pay him off.

Gosh u two.. I enforce a lil from both posts. I dont alpha roll as such, but o DO pick up my babies and sit them on my lap belly up..rund thier tum tums and we "kiss" I thnk that shows them i wont hurt them and me that they trust me. I so agree with NILIF ,which by the sound,is what cavnrott uses. I DO allow my dogs on lounges,WEN I SAY. But a previous behaviourist said i shouldnt. ALL i know is,with my dogs, when is speak, that and mean business..they listen. Now if i can get my newest Lewis (rescue) outta his DA,i will have perfect dogs. Tonight i took Lewis and Indie to the supermarket. Hubby went in n did shoppin while i controlled the beasts. I could hear two yappies carryin on at the sight of my dogs,..i practiced "look at me" with Lewis,..this went very well. OFF TOPIC..sorry! Speak to Erny for advice...U will get the best instruction there. ETA sorry bout spellin errors..

Well it worked very well for me. But Lewis is very HIGH PRAISE driven. SO once he makes boo boo's he is desperate to correct. Im in flame mode here wen i say this, but sometimes,as with unruly kiddies these days,i worry that the "softly softly" approach just isnt getting thru to our dogs. Could this account for recent upsurge in publicly announced poor behaviours in bigger breeds? ETA,try these tactic when u have a weekend at home. -
someone mentioned Jan fennell. Can anyone here tell me why she doesnt reccommend socializing early? Or did i misinterprate(spelling) what she was saying?
-
i used his methods on a particularly difficult to walk dog ,when going volunteer walking. I found that once she realised i meant business..she walked perfectly. No dramas,by my side,no lunging. FANTASTIC dog. I listened later in the day as another walker was leaving, say to her friend that walking that dog was a nightmare. I'm by no means a "dog expert",but it just goes to show that even if some of us get some of what CM is saying, then we might have an improved relationship with our pets.

How To Break Obsessive Behaviour
Mushaka replied to dogdayz's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I had this problem with Lewis when we moved the Guinea pigs outside. He pushed his nose so hard up to the cage he cut his nose on the chicken wire. I was nearly at my wits end when i thought hang on.. here...this is MY house bucko. So each time i saw him heading to the cage i was in waiting...i had a rolled up newspaper and BANG,against the wall, and yelled ''BAHH".When he stopped and headed back towards me,of course he was rewarded. I even used water at one point. Sneakin up behind him and SPLASH! I just kept at it for maybe a day or two,..now he doesnt even look sideways at the cage. P.s..i HATE those darn minor birds GGRRRRRRRR -
I use all different products, each month. The vet said they build up a resistance. Mind u frontline never worked for me. Made me feel like a bad mummy when they kept scratching. Im hitting it head on this time, ive got just about EVERY flea treatmant, indoors outdoors, oral and topical lol.. Last summer was a killer.

I feel very lucky to have my vet. hes fantastic. Honest and CARING. not in it for the money. God bless him Thankyou Juilan and staff at Jannali Vet Clinic Sydney (cant mis an opportunity to "plug" him)

i have webbing check, halti, lupi, harness and normal collars. I found walking my pup with another dog was the best way to train her to get used to it. Do u have another dog,or a friends dog u can walk with? I used a "coupler" and the older dog just showed her the ropes. With your dog,i would do as others said, and only use webbing lead a collars. The sound of chain lead might be frightening. Some dogs hate the feeling of the collar and a harness might be more suitable. Good on you for rescuing!!! ETA..sorry,missed the part where u said u have other dogs..der!! hey,its 4.45am..teething baby has me up,and now she is asleep i cant get back GGrrr

again, great advice thanx. Sometimes it pays to ask direct questions instead of just reading old posts. Again Thanx to all. If they tin fish, wouldnt they have preservatives? Would i not be better buying fresh from the fish market? Im thinkin of buying a freezer for the dogs so i can go to fish market once a week and buy in bulk. who makes thier own BARF patties? and what do u use? any good recipies?
-
Thanx everyone. Glad to c im not the only one a little confused! am looking forward to the fish markets to see what i can get there. Does anyone know if the guts n stuff of fish is good for the dogs? Maybe the fish markets sell it? I was also wondering, with the chicken frames, can u give them frozen? Just that i bout heaps, and i wonder if i can freeze them and if so,do i need to let thaw or just chuck em in the bowl lol.
-
I know this Barf business has been done to death, but i couldnt find anything specific. Ok, the question is, i have 1 staffy x ?(a little larger than pure), 1 pure staffy, and one Amstaff (x SBT but all the qualities looks size etc of AST). I am wondering what would be considered enough for them all each meal. I am just starting BARF today. I bought chicken frames, eggs and tuna. I know sardines are best, but i cant get large enough tins, and have no fish shop close by,but will make a trip out to fish market soon for them. What else should i mix in? Can someone with the same size or breed dogs as mine please give me some advice on what they would give their dogs?! Up until now,i have fed the dogs on SD,rice and tuna. Thanx

How Often Do You Bath Your Dog?
Mushaka replied to Baby Dragon's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
every two or so weeks... I normally do one a week so i guess by the time u get back round to the next its been 3 weeks. In colder weather it would be longer,so on a warm(er) day during winter, its all in one day (gotta make the most of the warm days). I cant imagine having a dirty dog in the house all the time..ewww -
You Need To Show The Dog Who Is Boss
Mushaka replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I agree, and lets not mention any names LOL,but Erny and I know who im referring to. When ever u ask a question, one "trainer" on here goes into "showdown" mode and finger pointing, such as blaming the owner for small training issues. People ask advice and need explanations, not answers that "fob off".. Good point u made, lets hope the guilty parties get off thier high horses, and help,or refrain from contributing negatives -
thanx Laffi..im about to place an order for Sentinal so i will get that too Cheers

Just a quickie.. my new rescue came to me with all kinds of little illnesses and issues. We have covered all of these except the mites. They have gone on to all the dogs now,and while im treating it with vet prescribed ointments and regular cleans,i have an "all in" wth the 4mth old puppy. one of her ears has become so sensitve i can hardly get near it. She squeals the minute i get to that side, and attacks me! Ive actually never had a "big dog" (shes an Amstaff) carry on like this, they are,or in my experience normally very patient with this kind of thing. Can someone give me some advice on how they handle this,as in all my years i havent come across it before! Thanx all

Help? Info On Running Puppy Preschool
Mushaka replied to GSD FAN's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Each week we were encouraged to pass the puppy. Wen we held someone elses dogs,we were asked to "check them" as if we were a vet. Check ears, teeth feet etc this is good for socializing and also good to get pup used to being touched by the vet. We also had periods of free play..We had one Cav King charles the rest staffies in the class,so wen it was free play time, only one staffy was allowed with the Cav(mind u that Cav was the sweetest thing and LOVED the wrestling). We were asked NOT to pat the dogs that jumped on us for attention. Each week she went through toilet training, how to stop puppy biting, how to effectively control your dog. Ideas on stopping your dog from chewing on things. Getting your puppies attention by usin "BAH" if they r doing something u dnt want them to. she gave us advise on halters, lupis, harnesses etc. She went through what treats to use for training. What will be expected if continuing to train your dog at obedience clubs. She gave us typed sheets on toilet training, and some basic puppy info the first week. We learnt basic commands each week, and practised them there under her guidance. "sit" week one "stay" week two "come" week three "heel" week four Im a lil hung over lol..too many wines with dinner,,or was it dinner with Wine?,..hmm but if i think of mre i will post it.. Hope this has helped a bit
