hadnt heard of that... Sheesh ... poor guys. They are all still fine, got them on the cough meds..just ran out though with 5 of them haha. Will get more today! -
I have recently taken in some pups, who as usual from the shelter came with KC. they have passed it on to my dogs who are vaccinated! When Lewis first came to me,7mths or so ago,he had a case of it,and we have since vaccinated him agaisnt it. It didnt pass to the others back then. But now,i have a family full of coughing hounds!! 3 of which are fully immunized to include KC. C5 for them all. Is this common?

Dog To Dog Aggression. Please Help.
Mushaka replied to greysandwhippets's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I do have a little of this with Lewis and Sage. Sage is 15 and has been with me from 6wks old. Lewis is a rescue and upon meeting Sage was fine, but now he tries to dominate her. I back Sage up everytime, and give her special treatment (allowing her on lounge etc). I also dominate Lewis at feed time as this is when he normally starts up. I "heard" him,and bump him away from Sages meal. Lucky for me Lewis can be read like a book so i can see long before it starts that he is in fight mode and can divert his attention. I dont know if he will ever stop it,or if im fighting a never ending battle. I am treating him at the moment for DA (in public) and SA,and hope that I can assert myself as pack leader so he will stop all of these behaviours completely(fingers crossed)! I would love other readers input on this, but i know from past questions similar that the response to this question can vary greatly. So take what u think will work and give it a try. The problem i see with your situation is that u have two of the same sex. I know bitches hold grudges,Im not so sure about boys though? Anyone?? -
it wasnt the chip... its the work she had at desexing that caused the lump...!!
-
OK OK..im sooo stupid!!! Talk about paranoid! I tool Indie to the vet to check the lump... We scanned her ,the chip is right between her withers, BUT the lump is RIGHT where she had all the needle work required for her desexing!!!!! So free shot at the IDIOT!!

K9 thanx for this post..so very Important, This should be copied by all breeders and handed out (if allowed)... I have my dog Sage who is now 15yrs,,,my friend took her off for a walk at about 13wks,plonked her in the bed of a Bullterrier who had never seen another dog,..needless to say,i went straight to the vet. Sage would always pee and cowar if she saw another dog after that and as soon as she was old enough, she wanted to KILL them. Had iKnown this back then I would have left Sage at home, well out of harms way! This has been a major learning experience for me though, and with Indie i have been very very careful for her not to have negative experiences! Thankyou again for your thread,..such valuable information!!

Yes. And as a result the handler is not all pent up/frustrated with the exertion that might otherwise be required in the use of another style of collar. Dog's pick up on their handler's body language. If the handler can keep their body language quiet and calm, this too can "rub off" on the dog and helps to calm him. So you really have a couple of things happening. You got it. WHOOHOOOO I CAN be trained!! Thanx everyone!!
-
Erny, thanx so much,..exellent reply! Thanx for adding the "step up" part.. Tell me if im wrong,..It would be less physically draining to train a dog using the prong, for the handler, and better for the dog,as the correction wouldnt be so possibly damaging, pinching the skin rather than pulling on the dogs throat?
-
Is there a medical issue wen dogs do this?? by that i mean ,can they get ill from it? I havent had this problem, but am curious
-
K9 or Erny,..is there a video of correct usage for a prong or is it used much the same as a martingale?? Size wise, how careful should you be? Given that Indie is nearing on 6mths now (19.4kg),and still growing, would i need to update regularly or again,is it much the same as the check chain ? Is this tool used only as a training collar,in the event that martingale strength is not enough? My only issue as i said ,is lunging..the rest of the time, since using the martingale to train, she walks quit well. However i just feel that i need something a little more. Once the dog is walking effectively,do u cease the use of the prong and use a regular collar,or do u continue its use? Sorry for asking so many questions!!

Thanx Erny and K9 for ur input
-
I was going to be brilliant and tell u priceless pets,,but fellow DOLers beat me to it! lol
-
Thanx Erny, yes i checked out some piccies. I think Indie is getting the hang of things just fine with the martingale collars, however she does LUNGE at other dogs ,and then the martingale becomes a Noose so to speak! (Indie doesnt lunge to attack, she lunges to greet) I can walk her 95% successfully with a normal collar now,but feel for "high dog traffic areas" a prong might be called for. Indie is already in excess of 18kg at 5mths so she is already very strong,& with her Amstaff staffy tenacity...well,u can imagine!! Are the legal to use in NSW? How old should a dog be? ETA- thanx Erny for your lengthy and as always educated and helpful advice!
-
one of each sex is best, get a CAV,..i fell in love with one at Puppy preschool...if ever i was in the market for a small fluffy,.this would be my pick. NEVER BUY A PET AS A GIFT unless the only surprise part is that YOUR paying and not your hubby!!!!! Or are you secretly buying another for yourself lol..cause thats the line I would use to get another...lmao!
-
Erny can u tell me y u wld use the prong? I am trying to understand its use? Ive never used one and wonder wat the benefits are in training. What more can it do that the martingale etc? ETA- where do u get these collars?
-
You find all of THAT boring? Perhaps it was just a precaution ..... sounds like a pretty serious situation out there. AHHhhh Erny,..U make me laugh! I was thinkin the same thing...i would be at the windows with popcorn and a softserve lol
-
Do you give these in conjunction with the shots from the vet?? I give my Sage the course of 4 shots over a month, and this lasts her a year. Changing her diet to include sardines etc has helped alot too. I was thinking about a heated mat for her during colder weather, but worry that the younger dogs might rip it apart.. Has anyone got one and if so.how sturdy is it?

Our bitch's microchip migrated down to the top of one of her front legs. It would be so easy to push it out. Our boy's we have no idea where it is!! But back on topic, he also has a lump on the side of his neck. We thought it might have been a reaction to an injection he had a couple of weeks previously but we're not sure. We are keeping an eye on it and it seems to be reducing in size. The trouble with our boy is that he has such a high pain threshold he doesn't let on that it hurts him or not. We can put quite a bit of pressure on it, and he doesn't flinch. Why not take your dog to the vet surgery and have them run the scanner over the lump to see if it's the microchip? I'm about to do that this week with my Rottweiler who has a lump just behind the shoulder blades. It's recent because I go over my dogs almost every day to make sure there's nothing there that wasn't there last time I looked. Exactly wat i was thinking of doing!!! Lewis needs a check up anyway so i will tag indie along for the ride. Thanx for all the input

Yea,i thought it might be.. Will just keep an eye on it. Thanx
