  1. HI, good start gettin the dog off your bed..thats gotta be the hardest thing isnt it??? I would suggest reading the triangle of temptation at the top of the training forum. Daily walking not only tires dogs out but helps to reinforce pack leadership(As long as you walk the dog to your side and NOT let her walk in front of you). Its hard to treat your babies like DOGS but thats what they are. We need to give them discipline(not harsh) firstly before affection which is only for us anyway, they dont understand it. I would reccommend crates if u have more than one dog. Use this time when not supervised to give her her own chew toys and bones etc. But i wouldnt let her take the bones out of the crate...Not when u have more than one dog. GO THE STAFFIES ...mwah to ur babies im sure they r heavenly
  2. they cant be sold in petshops that r i major shopping centressuch as Westfield. The pet shop there told me they were asked to remove thier stock
  3. The one in the middle is like my first rat Veruca,..awwww i used to take her everywhere.. No one knew my name but everyone wld say "HI Veruca" as i walked by...i was accustomed to being known as "The rat lady" lol..coulda been worse i guess. What surprises me is that they arent allowed to sell them in pet shops yet they ARE allowed to sell mice. Now i know u will know this Pix,..but RATS are far CLEANER and stink LESS than Mice. One of my rats Sabina, would actually "clean" her cage of all poopies by throwin it out on my loungeroom floor..Thanx girl..lol. But it proves my point, they like things clean!
  4. Downunder hooded spot.. WOW,,..u breed her urself? Saddest part about the rats is thier lifespan.. I wld love to c more of ur babies!! My best rat was a rescue we names "butch" fat old man he was weighed a tonne!
  5. Pix, i just LOVE ur blck hooded in the pic OMG...al of them in fact! but hoods r my faves! Arnet rats the sweetest pets!
  6. I watched "the dog whisperer" yesterday on this exact topic. He said that dog parks are "affection" and this is how us humans take the lazy way out of excersizing thier dogs. She needs to TAKE CONTROL.. practice the triangle of temptation at home and wear her dogs out. RUN/WALK/BIKERIDE/SKATE anything BEFORE she takes them to the park! then when he is tired and relaxed ,he wont have that over the top excess of energy. as Cesar says AFFECTION shld be last on the order of things,we ALL know this dog will pay the ULTIMATE price for her lack of good judgement. To be honest,i dnt think its just ur daughter with this ridiculoua attitude. I tried tellin my best friend who is a very clever woman, that her dog seems to feel he needs to protect her. He is a lovely dog, BUT he gets out the front and "attacks" (barks and chases) people. He also whines wen ties up out front of shops, even though she has walked him everyday and tied him since puppyhood (now 4 yrs old) I told her she needed to start with the hardest thiing which i KNOW is hard, but get him OUT of her bed. her response was " he is fine, im not after a perfectly trained dog". In todays world,..what he is doing is classified as an attack.. he only needs to bark at someone who isnt so keen on dogs and off to court she goes!! People drive me NUTS with thier unwillingness to do whats best for thier dogs..
  7. Hi there, IMO and im not a PRO either, they will settle with more walks. Since they are driven by the desire to walk. You could reward them with this. In the DOL training section, there is the Triangle of Temptation. This wld be a good thing to learn and a good place to start. Nice that u r giving ur dogs cuddles,..but thats for YOU not them..they dnt understand cuddles..in fact...ur probably reinforcing negative behaviours and dont even realise it. Becoming the pack leader might help your DA dog from feeling the need to be so protective as well. No need to duck for cover you will only get support here in DOL and advice. Well thats what i have found anyway! Good on you for making the effort with your dogs,so many others give up.
  8. ok..i think she is pretty aware that i am pack leader, but with 3 other dogs in the house and me being the 'leader" Im not sure she sees me as the most fun to be with. I know she rushes excitedly wen i call her but im not sure?..should i keep everyone else OUT of the discipline side of things? I ALWAYS treat her wen she comes to me either verbally or with a treat. i dont really discipline so much as eg..if she goes to get on the lounge i say "no" and put her back on the floor and say "good girl" and pat her wen she remains on the floor...?? we had palnned on hiring "help" but i dont want to wait till then to get her training started. Could i mess things up by trying and not knowing what im doing?
  9. leasf was supposed to be LEASH...sheesh!! havin a hard time holding them all at once
  10. how long should training sessions be?..shld i kneel down to the dog or always be standing? im also havein a hard time hilding leasf, treats and clicker...HELP.. PS..think i cld do with a typing course too!
  11. Im not sure who will be doing the puppy training. My vet has suggested it to me for socialization before she reaches the age tha tshe can attend proper trainin group lessons at 12 wks. the classes i think are at his surgery..? She is only NOW learning "sit", "up" and "come"..iveo nly had her a week and have only now started proper one on one training as i was letting her get used to us all. I DOOOOOO have a problem gettin her to listen ALL the time..i KNOW this means she isnt really trained,..and ive ALWAYS had this issue wen training. CAn u gove me any advise on how to get the dog to "recall" all of the time? Im 110% dedicated to making this puppy the best she can be. Im near Cronulla Pinnacle.. do uthink its important to get her near cats or am i over doing things?
  12. :p of course...IM so stooopid..ONE AT A TIME. I guess puppy pre-school will give her good socialization skills. How do u get them to stay focused once there are ditractions. This is where i normally lose control! Aslo, I was wondering if anyone knows how i can get my puppy used to cats when i dont know a soul that owns one/ I called the animal shelter and they said NO to me bringing her in to meet them. Does anyone have any suggestions?
  13. In addition to that, since i have 3 dogs. Only two of which im training since the other is TOO old,..i mean one foot in the grave poor girl..so its just the Staffy who is 6 and the 9 wk old puppy that i will be training. We only recently got both of these dogs,Lewis the old guy, being a rescue. I want to know if i should train them together or seperatley?
  14. Im about to go off to the pet store to buy a clicker..thed said $5.50..does that price sound right? i was never going to bother with clickers but the "light bulb " :p just went on. I had one of those moments in time, where i thought hang on..if i had a clcicker...they wld KNOW they did the right thing and not get over excited with the "good dog goooood dooooooooog" hyper talk. When they get over stimuated they lose focus...HMMMM ok ok..im blonde!!! i have decided also that i will have a jars of treats throughout the house incase some one accidently does something good and i wish to reward immediatley. I am aslo writing a list of "house rules" for the dogs that i will have each family member to adhere to and visitors as well. Does anyone have any ideas?..So far, im using the NILIF approach and no lounges no beds etc..i must say it is very very hard not to let the dogs up for cuddles but i feel its in their best interest. I have Staffy X a Pure Blue staff and a Amstaff x English Staff so even more reason to make sure they are well mannered. I certainly dnt want to add fuel to the fire of the BSL. If im doing anything wrong here please tell me. And any suggestions will be gratefully recieved THANX ALL Lyn
  15. My pups on chicken mince, rice and Hills Puppy little bites...plus some left overs from us! I dont give bones anymore since every variety ive had have eventually in some way got caught in thier mouths, luckily no major damage done but enough to call it quits and only use sturdy chew toys!
  16. IMO he is trying to be dominant. Its tricky isnt it..I have an old dog who i thought i trained rather well, however i look back now and think maybe she trained ME? Never did she display any of the things your dog is doing, however she does it in a far more subltle way.
  17. NEVER pick up a dog in a fight, from any side. Only asking for trouble. If ur dog id that DA then i wld suggest a muzzle untill u sort things out. But lifting ur dog will onlymake things worse quote name='Midol' date='20th Jul 2007 - 06:38 PM' post='1902355'] Midol - it sounds to me here that your dog has actually been "forming" aggression for a while. The above section I've quoted (and particularly - but not exclusively - the section I've highlighted) are tell-tale signs of dog signalling he is not comfortable with the situation he is in and it is especially at these times that your role as leader needs to be activated. In other words, that you take steps to protect him and take charge of the situation. Of course for your dog to understand that's your job (and to trust that you will not fail in it) depends on your leadership attributes that you exhibit to him on a general and daily basis. I would suggest you enrol with a reputable dog training school (if you are not already) where you can work in a controlled environment and begin on desensitisation exercises. I have no idea of your relationship with your dog (as perceived by your dog) but running a check on heirarchy status never goes astray. It would be the most helpful if you could arrange a consultation with a behaviourist so that your dog's behaviour and your relationship could be observed and diagnosis confirmed. This person should be able to set out a program for you in relation to process of desensitisation as well as give you things to do or change in relation to your reactions to your dog's behaviour. I'll try contacting the person Husky used, I meant to do it ages ago but sorted his issues out but this one I don't think I can handle alone. There is one in Buderim (I think) I can attend. I'll try and sort out attending on a regular basis once I have a job (few weeks max) I don't mind it if he snaps back, he is going to defend himself if someone attacks him and I don't think I could ever train him not to, my issue is with him growling at innocent dogs now. Most of the dogs doing it are offleash, in onleash areas Like I said, the only place I can walk him where I doubt I'll meet offleash dogs is in the state forest which is illegal. I've called the ranger a few times but I don't think he can be bothered coming up here, we're a bit out of his way. The only way to prevent it is to walk in the state forests IMO. I encounter dogs everywhere I walk - as he is a husky if I don't walk him he is a terror Leopuppy: If another dog is biting Axle, or acting aggresively I shouldn't pick him up? If I left him he'd probably end up killing or seriously injuring the other dog...
  18. Thanx everyone.. i just cant describe how painful it was.. i ended up having to see a Doctor about my grief!! OMG..Dogs just have a way of working into your sould dont they
  19. Hi there, GOOD work for taking in such a high needs dog. my last two dogs have been rescue dogs. Jkae recentl passing away from the cancer he had wen we got him. The shelter were going to put him to sleep, but we took him on and he lived a very happy and comfortable 2 years. and now my little Lewis who has severe seperation anxiety, has been hit by a car, limps and is blind in one eye from a cherry eye that had never been taken care of! I know the dilemma ur in..SHEESH i think its going to need MORE than training on ur baby..possibly a behaviour specialist..doggy councelling?? maybe even some meds? Iwill follow this thread with much interest Best of luck and again Well done

Can someone tell me ..... I am worried about Parvo although but think the bubba might have a dash of deli belly ..??? I feed my dogs fresh food mixed in with kibble, and this was the pups first meal of it. Could it have been too much for her little belly? Her poop has been dark and runny,..but she is not vomitting and is energetic.. Any ideas?
