  1. TRIANGLE OF TEEMPPPTTAAAAAAATIIIIOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNN My pup wont go near her food until i tell her. i can even leave the room now and she will just follow me ... she waits for her "YES" command! Erny im sure will steer u in the right direction but what ever u do dont let this pup win..not ONCE!!
  2. Hey all...i found a canvas bag that clips onto ur belt/pants. Its meant to be for a ball etc and has a drawstring on top. I fold the top drawstring part down while training and can fit my WHOLE hand in to pull out a treat easily. a grand sum of $4.50 !! PERFECT P.S..found it at Petcare 2000 Taren Point
  3. doesnt bother me really wat she teaching,im only there for the puppy play. Get Indie used to all breeds of dogs etc. i was very proud wen we were asked to get our dogs and put them back on lead. the class scrambled about trying to round up there babies. and i just stayed where i was and called "Indie, COME',..she came straight back even though she had all those puppies to play with.
  4. she was a vet nurse for 10 yearsbut is now an accredited trainer. To be honest i think i knew more than her ..lol..either that or she just takes it easy on newbies. The other owners an puppies had NO IDEA,..it was driving me INSANE watching another family with two puppy staffys allow the pups to chew on the leads the entire class. ANd the trainer said nothing. AHHHhhhh My dog already sits comes etc..and she said she wont teach come until week 3. I think come would be better to learn than sit????
  5. thanx cosmolo..would u encourage it in puppies? This is wat the trainer was referring to? Do u think she is out dated in her training too?? She said not to play it with kids in the vicinity and not to play until puppy is old enough to have learnt to stop nipping etc. what r ur thoughts on that? Im going to bombard her with all ur answers soon lol
  6. Can u believe i went to training and the very subject of tug o war came up by the instructer. She advised that u should never play tuo o war until ur dog knows who is charge (pack leader) and is out of nipping stages etc. She said that u shld never play if there are children in the house as dogs dont see them as dominants and may continue to play with the kid once the game is over,or may initiate the game on a child. I have owned staffys for over 15 years and co owned prior to that,in this time they have all lived inside with me and my kids. Just as it is important to ALWAYS watch ur kids in general,it isnt always possible 100% of the time.Sometimes i need to pee or i walk from one room to the other etc..do i take the dogs outside everytime i pee etc?? all three of them? I think if u have small kids its better to teach the children correct ways to handle dogs, and to leave them alone in my absence. And to teach the dogs never to vie for things from each other or anyone else. IMO only..and this works well for me and has done for many years!! HHHHHmmmmmm...?? Well I think i will just leave tugging out of my house and keep it that way!
  7. Still ..what i sed is backin up wat i first said?..how did it differ? Hmmmmmmmmm yes move right along...
  8. Will get the yoghurt lol..thanx for that!
  9. I dont understand what ur saying?...Did i say it DID have something to do with the show ring???? Seems alot of people are taking alot of things out of text here. I said i have well trained dogs but NOT up to show standard. What im saying is that im no pro at trainin doggies, but know enough to train my dogs to be good dogs. People that dont know anything about dogs think my dogs r well behaved and well trained.. i of course know that my dogs know nothing (due to my lack of expertese ) compared to MOST of the dogs around the show/competition ring etc.
  10. kitkat wld u advise to slowly intorduce new food?..i will get some now and slowly ween off SD.. thanx...Love DOL..i learn somethin new everyday!
  11. wow..sd with fillers..Hmmmmm might have to change brands then. A vet put me onto Hills SD ages ago when i had a rescue dane with special dietry needs!!!
  12. and as far as training goes,..im ok with that. I dont train show dogs, just well balanced dogs. My only problem is that i have new rescue staffy who has seperation issues. Far beyond the norm, and out of my leauge. The vet has suggested he goes on an anti depressant its so bad. I havent asked for any other training advice at ALL?.
  13. And wat makes u think i dont listen? can u please explain here WHAT it is that has indicated that im NOT listening? ..and do u liken urself to Steve Austin?
  14. Im pretty sure that i DID say that i can agree that my theory must have been outdated...! I dont believe tug o war topic has risen before or i would have heard more before. But I CAN tell u that the last Dog i trained was with the help of people like Steve Austin and others and i was told not to do it..as i DID say,and am saying AGAIN,that from what ive since researched since lastnight and today that it is an outdated theory! You offered help to me at a fee..not free!!
  15. until DOL.. i thought BARf was something u did after two many scotchs on a Saturday night, moments after eating a hotdog, and somwhere prior to,or after getting the taxi home..preferably not somewhere in between. Thos damn taxi drivers get so mad about that kinda thing!!!
  16. Myszka I Like u was told the same thing.. its a no no. I have only rescued dogs since then and have never rescued a dog interested in these games anyway. My pup now has not been taught anything beyond come and sit...but she starts PUPPY SCHOOL today...YAY. Things change opinions change, even in the professional world of training, Obviously the thoughts on tug-o-war kind of games has now changed. It isnt a MYTH,but i guess from what im reading, its an outdated theory. Even in the medical world, things change..i had my first child 18 yrs ago, back then u were told to lie baby on thier side. I now have a 16wk old and am told that u must NEVER lie a baby on its side, but instead flat on thier backs...and long before my time it was actually suggested baby sleep on thier tummies...OT i know, but proving my point of evolution and revelations etc Im surprised pinnacle since ur a qualified dog trainer that u would feel the need to have ur ego stroked by people on a dog forum by them agreeing with you??
  17. OK OK..im i just did a bit of research on it,and it seems maybe my theory, which i WAS told 15 years ago when my old girl was a pup,is outdated? From what i can gather it was a no no,but now can be used as a tool Still dont think i will encourage it with the little ones about.
  18. I guess either training method will work for ball play however i feel the leash attatched means more training involved,or toy on string.. i didnt find it was needed to teach any of my dogs. I guess its up to u how u do it. With TUG-o WAR games. I have a 2 year old and 16wk old baby,i would prefer that TUGGING games were OFF limits at all times. I just feel its safer NOT to have this kind of game around them. I really cant remember now who told me this, either it was a trainer,or a training manual that suggested it...But IMO with small kids in the house its a big NO NO
  19. I will be using all of the above to mix it up a bit...! I shldve been more specific, but im lazy ..lol
  20. I have 3 dogs ALL on different diets as they are all different ages. You didnt say how old ur dog is? My puppy is on Science puppy food. It does cost a little more but it does last a long time. To make it go further i add in rice and chicken mince. The 6yr old is on Science and he LOVES can food as well so i mix it in with his kibble, rice and chicken mince. The old girl 15 is on Science senior, rice and chicken mince. She is allergic to canned food. Preservatives and all that junk makes he lips itch!! Feeding time is FUN!!!!! lol.. Im starting the older ones on a fish diet today actually,..keep them on what they have but adding tuna to the mix for the fish oils. Its good for the older dogs. So if ur worried about dry food only, there are plenty of ways to get around it.But its a MUST to get them on a good base such as the Innova,SD,Eukanuba etc..then work from there!! IMO anyway
  21. Tug of war is never a good game to play with a dog. I am not sure who told you that. It has several adverse effects. The dog learns to compete against you, rather then work with you or for you. The dog becomes mouthy with objects when you are around. At any time the dog will try and take an object from you that he wants. They have a hard time understanding this is just a game and not a competition. We always tell our adopteres to never play tug of war with a dog. It can get scary very quickly when the dog decides he is tired of the game and just wants to win. Good luck in training your dog. Source(s): Animal rescuer
  22. I got little kids, just safer not to play those games at all.. I cant remember who told me..as i said dont quote me
  23. I never play tug with any of my dogs..always worries me they might decided to tug on somethin else that i DONT want..?? Again..i think it was steve austin that told me that, but again..dont quote me on it!!
  24. Im pretty sure it was Steve Austin that told me how to train the ball game?....
  25. I used to buy cheap tennis balls cause i liked to hit them with the racket...but i guess its ur choice. whatever u wish for the toy to be??
