Cant Get Dog To Learn "drop"
Mushaka replied to Mushaka's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanx Kelpie, I found the source of the problem..OH uses "drop" command to get things off the dog. I used "Lie" instead. I half starved the poor petal and let her get real hungry before starting the session. I used the food to nose, then brought it down, then as she was bum down nose down i gently "placed her front paws in front of her then used "lie" and put some food between her legs to keep her there.. No skill..probably could have done it 1000 better ways, but it worked!.. she still isnt that great though so im not through the woods yet. I did run into some other people from puppy school today and mentioned my troubles...they said they cant get thier dog to do it either!! Lol.. glad its not just me!!! -
My dogs walk ok when I have one at a time, but when im walking with toddler and stroller in tow,i use a coupler. This is where the fun begins LOL.. The puppy plays up big time. Ive invested in a "lupi" harness today. I will use it tomorrow and see how i go. Has anyone else used the "Lupi"?

Cant Get Dog To Learn "drop"

PTDS, Why not? The reason I do not want the dog on lead when teaching down is because peoples emotions are transferred from the lead to the dog. It is obvious that l&l wants the dog to be the best in the class. However most vet nurses do not understand the pull or push method of teaching down. This is a clear example of the vet nurse, regardless of what so called accreditation in dog training she has only going on what she has been told rather than what her experience in dog training has been. I would certainly not stick to what has been shown already, as after two weeks the dog seems to be not doing very much. Kelpie-i I have taught many puppy classes over the last 20 years and found that once again the owner has more issues than than the dogs do. L&L please, this is why I would not take on a private lesson with you. Despite you saying that you only needed to get your tax return done before enlisting my help at the cost of very little compared to other trainers you think so highly of. I saw from a very early stage that most of the issues lie with you and not the dogs. I do want to help you but you have to listen in the first place before you will have success. I would put my life on the line and come out to you for free, just to show you how easy basic obedience is for your dogs and living in harmony is very acheivable when you are not so strung out on other issuses in your life and blame it on your dogs. WHAT THE??????.............. You offered to come out,u never said you wouldnt. I DID tell u that this wasnt possible until i had secured more funds as all money had been used on my rescue dog and my new pup and all the shots etc that go along with it. My dog has no "issues" she has learnt all other commands readily, just getting a little stuck on this one. Im sure that the most competant of trainers has had some dogs that are "tripped up" by a simple command, and have to employ different methods for that particular dog etc. I fail to see how or why you continuously blame ME whenever I post a question on things she might be doing. She IS after all only 3 MONTHS old! I think that from what I see here on this forum,Im very glad I chose to hire a different behaviorist for Lewis (my rescue dog that CAME TO ME with issues). I think you are a right, that the dog can grasp the energy on the lead, and I do feel for any dog on the other end of a leash u r holding as u obviously are very bitter about something!! Maybe life hasnt been so kind?..Watever it is,seek help and stop taking it out on people that you know nothing about. Stop using the shield of the internet to harrass and be nasty to people when u have had a rough day! You say Erny leaves a bad taste in ur mouth..R u kidding???? As they say in the bible, take the PLANK out of ur own eye before removing the speck from someone elses! Thanx to all the people that replied to my threadhelpfully and with maturity. Although with people like Pinnacle on these forums,i DO think i will hesitate before asking any further questions. -

Cant Get Dog To Learn "drop"
Mushaka replied to Mushaka's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I dont think this tactic will work as she only gts dinner on "yes" command. She learnt that readily, and will now only take her meal after i say so. She also eats very calmly..she isnt a "scoffer". If i removed her food she would sit and wait for it,not beg to get at it!!! ATM im using Jerky bits, the little tiny flaky bits. She does like them, but maybe i should try chicken or somethin really yummy for this one??? I will give it another go today and let u all know how she progresses. How long should i persist in this command (training session time)? Should i mix it up and get her to do all her commands or just focus on this one till she gets it!? -

she does follow the treat down to the ground but once i pull my hand out to get her into the down position she loses interest. If i get a toy,she is OVER stimulated and loses focus. I even tried skipping one of her meals to make sure she is hungry( didnt skip all together, gave her part portion -

I was told to do it from sit position as its easier for the dog.Like i said its only for basic obedience. Do u think its as easy to teach from standing. and how do u do it? -

I have been gettin her food treat, bringin it to her nose,(while she is in sit position) bring food dwn between her front legs then out in front (in L-shape).. she NEVER gets into drop position no matter how tight i do it. As i mentioned i have now resorted to bringin her front legs forward myself! -
My dog will be tested on monday for her "drop" command. For the life of me,she just isnt getting it!! Ive resorted to physically putting her into postition, but she still doesnt seem to get what i want her to do. She easily learnt "come" "sit" "shake"(hands) She even is pretty much getting "up"..but the drop is killin me. Im not intending on showing her,its for basic obedience only, should i change the command(e.g to 'lie'),just incase she has associated "drop"with something other than wat i want her to do o r shld i persist with that command? Any suggestions would be appreciated Edited to add: wasnt sure if i should post here or in puppy problems as she is only 3mths old

Im getting sick of the "gently gently" approach with Indie. Its only play biting but she just isnt getting it. Im going to have to be tougher on her. She bit me a minute ago so i tucked her gums under her teeth and squeezed. She yelped and sat down and stopped the biting straight away. Looks like she is a tough nut. My dane was always very easy,..a "NO" was all that was ever required for her. Such a sweet girl!
-
hahahaha glad im not the only one. At first i thought my six year old was developing a skin condition. Even had the vet check, just to be sure. But Nope..it was all puppy bites!! :D
-
I know the BARF diet is very popular, but ive had issues with all types of bones! smaller bones gettin caught in the roof of dogs mouth, one was caught in the inside of my dogs gum,and required vet treatment after it caused an absess. After a few incidents like that i gave up on bones!! Maybe ive been unlucky??
-
If theres one thing i have learnt... hit REPORT before someone else does!! if u think its gettin out of hand dont wait! I was on here a while an was surprised how nice everyon was,but ive since come across "the other" variety. Dont take it personally

Puppy Pre-school..advice Please On "come" Command
Mushaka replied to Mushaka's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
pup is now 13wks old.. i TOTALLY agree Erny.. I only call if i know she will come, and if she doesnt come,i go to her and call come and run away so she chases..Is this ok to do?..what do u suggest -
I have my pup in pre school mainly just for socialization. But i do have a few Q's. I asked about the "come" command. She doesnt teach that till week 3 apparently. My baby is well under way with her "come" command as i feel its more important than the "sit" command that she taught week 1..mind u my pup is good there too... But i asked what to do if she doesnt come when called. She said "at this age,Nothing".. does this sound right?
