  1. i only use Paratak from the vets which I get discounted....
  2. Hi and congrats on your new pup to be... If its any advice I could give it would ony be a few things... dont spend a fortune on a new bed, pup will destroy two or three in the first year or so.... Have a water bottle and ticking clock for pup to settle in to new home without litter/mother.... Dont separarate your cat from the pup all together, let them interact as much as your cat is wanting to at cats own pace, we separated our and i wish we hadnt as its taken 18 months to get them to say hi to each other..... Practice 'recalls or "come" as much as you can early on, you will be glad you did...... Enjoy and take heaps of photos as they grow up too fast! Also if you have more questions this forum is a great place to ask for all kinds of advice, I sure did You dont need a breed book, just a general dog book with ideas for pup should do fine. Best of luck and enjoy...
  3. Hi Whitka, You have a few options with mouthing... Depends which one works for you and which one you feel comfortable with... You could growl and do the boss grip thing, by holding your hand over the pups mouth until he stops wriggling and then release... or you could put something on your hands that tastes terrible and works as a deterrent like vicks, maybe others will have other suggestions? Another is to simply put your hands behind your back or in your pockets and ignore the dog... I can only think of these ones, our german shepherd mouths to get attention so we ignore her, but the boss grip was the only one that worked for us...and tickling her toungue which isnt pleasant, that stops her pretty quickly.... Good luck, Im sure others will have more suggestions for you....
  4. Hi Shazza, Mybe pup is doing this as he is used to concrete as this is what he used to pee on before you got him? Not peeing on grass would be great (no dead patches on lawn) but if its outside the back door thats a problem. Eveytime he tries to wee there take him onto the grass on lead and praise after like he just urinated liquid gold, I guess you could put something on the concrete to try and deter him going there like a physical object rather than a chemical.. Not sure what else to suggest, but maybe he is not used to grass and thats why hes not peeing there... get him familiar as you can on the grass so he feels more comfortable there? good luck!
  5. We get Paratek worming tablets from our vet and depending on the weight we have to cut some in half... they do the trick! They are 1 tablet per 10kg (I think) and I give her 3.... They do have smaller tabletd though for different weights of dogs... I refuse to get supermarket tablets...
  6. Id have to agree with this post, I was bitten on the face by my cousins corgi when i was 3 as I patting it while eating. This made me more determined to have no eating issues when we got our German Shepherd... so I can understand why you want to do it... We did touch her while she ate BUT in addition put more great food in her bowl when she was eating to show her us approaching while eating was a good positive thing and to welcome it...we have done this since 8weeks old with great success. This has worked extremely well and we can take the bowl mid meal and she willl just sit there quietly and hope i put it back. She never growled when we came near her while eating.. This has taught her that we are in charge of her meal and she must behave accordingly before for her to be fed and continue being fed. Im not an expert but this is what has worked very well for us...
  7. My dog had them at 6 months then 12-13 months... Just show as much leadership as you can during this time, maybe limiting the time outside until it passes. My girl was suprised by a small fluffy dog off lead run upto her in the dark and the effects lasted months.... Remember never to praise/reassure when they are showing fear, Id just continue on as normal... Good luck
  8. My German shepherd used to dig heaps of holes in the lawn but only to find stuff like coins, old pegs, irrigation tubibg, pipes etc... I tried everything and recently tried putting her poo in the holes before filling them up again and she hasnt touched them since!!!! i figure she scents she has been there before so why bother. i tried it with the plants i have just put in the garden bed and it has worked too! yay!
  9. I tried the rocks but my pup wont leave them in the bowl, she will take them out and play with them....
  10. Its prob not a popular suggestion but to stop my German Shepherd jumping on me I gave her one knee to the chest... it suprised her more than anything else but she hasnt ever done it again.. I had tried turning around but she would just jump on my back and walking off but it didnt work either. Doesnt matter how excited she is to see me she knows she has to sit in front of me for attention......
  11. Great result! Wow so happy to hear that, hoping pup is home soon and recovers quickly..
  12. So Glad they figured out what it was causing the problems.... Hoping for a safe and speedy recovery and test results
  13. Sending good well wishes your way, hope your pup gets better real soon...
  14. Just an update, Zoe is now on Royal Canin German Shepherd and she is doing great.. She no longer has the incessant itching or dandruff and her coat feels smooth and looks great... Very happy with this food....
  15. We do lots of lpngline training too for recalls... The other thing we did was to play out in our yard then recall her and if she didnt come we would stop play immediately and go inside leaving her there... She quickly learnt that when she didnt come all play stopped... If she came we continued playing and it has been working reeally well in terms of teaching her she couldnt ignore our commands... At the park we dont let her off lead often but once we did and she wouldnt come so we got her attention, called "come" then ran away from her... I couldnt believe how fast she chased us....
  16. At obedience school we were always taught to teach your dog to frop from stand not a sit, only because if you need the dog to drop quickly ie. when running towards you over a road with a car approaching and you yell drop by the time they sit then drop it willl be too late... Just what we were told but we taught our dog from stand as it was easier to get her to drop...
  17. In reference to your original post, I have always been instructed to show firm leadership when the dog is fearful.... This means not reacting or freaking out whatever the case may be.. With fear periods we saw 2 fear stages one at 6 months then one at 13 months and our very bold GSD became scared of every little noise for a couple of weeks but she came out the other side, unfortunately with some issues as the neighbours dog gave her a scare in the dark which took some time to rectify but all is good now... When a dog is showing signs of fear or anxiousness patting and re-affirming the dog is just reassuring the dog its ok to be scared and this behaviour will continue or make it worse... by ignoring you are setting an example "well if hes not scared why should I be"... 18. Need that metal wire mesh stuff from bunnings and stakes... plastic trellis just gets eaten through.. Could try putting the dogs poo in the hole before covering it up, we tried it and Zoe has stopped digging holes in the lawn...
  19. thats exactly what bark busters taught my sister to do, chain throw... and my GSD never does this either, she just sniffs strangers and if they go to pat her shes licking them all over... Suss out Ernys suggestion now.. good luck.
  20. MM, Ive just swapped Zoe onto RC for her itchy skin from Proplan.. hoping that works. I had it delivered to me at work by pets pantry.... Pet stock in Mitcham have it too though... Best of luck, love to hear how the Orijen goes..
  21. Hi MM, So Zali is getting Orijen, lucky girl... I havent seen it anywhere but i found it on this website for delivery in Melb..Where in Ringwood did you see it?? Thats out my way kind of.. http://www.pookinuk.com.au/delivery.asp
  22. Hi, Within 3 nights of bringing home our 7 week old puppy she had roundworm.. Its quite common to get from their mothers even though they are/have been wormed.. Its normal for them to be quiet and have the runs a bit, welll our girl did...but yes she had runny greenish poops from the wormer and was a bit down and very sooky.. she recovered quickly though. The only wormer I use it Paratec, you can get it from your vet..... It killed them all in a few days. My sister is a vet nurse and she thinks the supemarket wormers are useless... and I saw the paratec work within days...You have to worm every month on the day, OH forgot and she got them again, they are very susceptable at this time. best of luck.
  23. Thanks, Ive been looking at their web page for the last couple of days and its "under construction".. Will have another looky look! Doh! too late..
  24. Imagine all the dog food they could have bought with the $$ they spent on bills, poor pup..
