  1. Hi R&M, Happy bday to Riley, I have no experience with colitis but I hope he is feeling better soon....
  2. My GSD was desexed at 9 months, dropped her ff in the morning and picked her up at 5-6pm and she was groggy and couldnt stand up until about 9pm that night.. Although my sister is her vet nurse I felt better keeping her home where she wsa in our care and I had time off... She ate little the next day and was back to her old hyper self within 24 hours... Just keep pup as inactive as you can..
  3. What a gorgeous puppy!!!! Those pimple things look exactly like the red rash my GSD had from constantly licjing her girly area and belly after she would go to the toilet... The only time they finally went away was when I had her de-sexed and she had an elizabethan collar on for 10 days and she couldnt lick it anymore and it went away... I also use aloveen and its great. Cant wait to see more puppy pictures...
  4. Hi At 6 months I would have thought pup may be back to 2 meals a day, maybe try morning and night , no lunch?
  5. Our GSD was brought up on eukanuba as a pup but we were also told it had bad preservatives which made her extremely hyperactive and loopy, she itched constantly and had constant soft 4 poops daily which smelt really bad! We changed to advance and she had stopped itching, isnt as crazy and her poop is firmer, darker and less regular and doesnt smell bad (as far as poo goes).. Its individual to your dog but if you dont try any other brands you wont find out what they do well on...
  6. Hi, we had this EXACT same problem with our GSD but when she was 9 months old. We called Judi and she worked her magic with our girl with private lessons to get control and focus and then we slowly integrated back into class around other dogs...now at 12 months she is so much better..
  7. As a kid I wa bitten in the face by patting a corgi while it was eating.. so when we got our pup we took the bowl away from her and added more food so she had a good association with us touching her bowl... We have noticed our pup got loopy like she has ADHD and turned a bit feral when she had eukanuba so we put her onto advance and she has been great..
  8. I feel your pain. Our GSD just turned 1 and she went through a bad destructive phase also. She has destroyed hundreds of dollars in new trees, our new BBQ, the cover for the bbq, outdoor setting, hose, underground irrigation, list goes on.. it gets a bit better, try a deterrent spray. perhaps?.
  9. Hi! Our pup was at puppy school at 8weeks and was terrified! we thought we had the most timid GSD ever, but it took a few weeks to get over it, maybe a couple of months... puppy school will be the best thing for her, to help her meet and experience different things and other breeds in this crucial 8-16wk stage... our big tough shepherd hid under the chairs from the smaller dogs, can you imagine that??? but with time she came out of her shell and became a cheeky little monkey. Whoever the puppy school is Im sure they can make sure you encourage her slowly and gently not to freak her out or create bad memorys of puppy school.. just let them know and give her lots of time to get used to it..Its also a place to see different kinds of people which is the best thing for her. As for pppl coming to the house, just get them to sit quietly on the floor and maybe wait until she approaches them, it may take a bit but shes still young.... goodluck!
  10. Hi Guys, My GSD is 1yr old and on advance but Im thinking of trying out Eagle pack or Proplan.. I know heaps of ppl use EP but the two places in my area Ive asked about it say the vic distributor is really bad and its very hard to get.... Im in the Blackburn Area in Melb, does anyone know where else I can get these foods from and which they prefer? Thanks heaps..
  11. My GSD has almost destroyed her wubba, nearly ripped off the cove bit its still going after a month or so... Havent heard of a cuz. Must investigate. Big thick ropes bones last her ages and she loves them, perfect for indoor! I bought a great squeeky ball at big W which still makes a noise after 24 hours, thats a record!!
  12. Mine has chicken necks (frozen in summer) and squashed in with peanut butter, She loves it!
  13. Our GSD female was 9 months old and weighed 28kg and had a hernia removes at the same time and that was almost $400 including a discount and drugs..
  14. Our dog is very possessive with toys, if shes getting too rough I will take it put it away in the cupboard, and she then barks at me but I agnore her.. This is to teach her that I am the leader and I govern playtime, not the other way around.. Same as if she brings a toy to me and puts it in my lap, I will choose a toy I want to play with, not her... This will let puppy know who the boss is... And she loves to be chased so she pinches stuff and then waits for us to chase her to grab it ie. socks and hubbys ventolin.. And then we play with something else to distract her and she will drop the sock and forget about it for a bit then we pick it up.....
  15. How does this help a dog to refuse food thrown over a fence when you only train them to refuse food offered by another when you are with them? Im not sure, they mentioned it at training thats why I started this thread.. How would a dog trained to refuse food except from its handler go being kennelled. Good question, why do they teach this at training then to refuse food unless from the handler.. Most obedience dogs don't seem to have too much trouble differentiating a formal exercise from taking treats. I don't have any difficulty with the exerise but the idea that it might save a dogs life is a bit of a stretch for me. I should go back and ask the instructor who said this then...it seems like a great tool but may only work when the handler is present. Im not sure why the trainer said it but it got me wondering how it would work if I wasnt their either so thats why I started the thread....
  16. Thanks for your replies, lucky i have great neighbours with dogs themselves so its not something i was really worried about, more of a hypothetical situation.. thanks again..
  17. We are teaching it at school by getting the dog to look away or refuse food put under their nose by us or another person . They can not have the treat unless we give the command to eat. Is that what you mean?
  18. Hello All, So at school my GSD is learning food refusal. I get focus then say 'eat' and then she eats the treat. She has been going really well but I thought of a problem with this.... At training they say food refusal is a great tool as it could one day save the dogs life (a couple of dogs were poisoned in our area from having poisoned food tossed over the fence) the aim is to teach her not to eat food until we give the command. But with treat balls and Kongs which we leave out for puppy to keep her mind active while alone at home, she has to get the treats out then she eats them, no-one there to say 'eat'. If its ok to eat the treats from the kong/balls or treats Ive hidden in the yard for her, god forbid if someone were to feed something that would make her sick, or if shes eating treats off the ground Ive hidden for her, how would she distinguish the two? Sorry if this sounds confusing, but Im wondering whether this whole food refusal, then leaving treats out for her is confusing my pup? Any advice???
  19. Make sure your pup knows they wont get pats until they are sitting... Our pup although terribly excited will sit but her bum moves all over the place, its quite funny to watch. She will sit and we keep our hands behind our back and pat her when she is still and sitting. There are a couple of friends who she goes NUTS over but she will still sit eventually for a pat.. If she jumps we have asked our guests to lift their knee to stop her jumping on them and to turn around and ignore her until she calms down.. works a treat.. Goodluck!
  20. If your work is flexible enough then you may aswell... We took two weeks off work and in that time we made sure we went out for a couple of hours at a time to get her used to us leaving and being on her own.. It killed us to hear her cry but she soon got over it and we didnt make a fuss when we returned.. We had a great neighbour who offered to feed her while we were at work until she stopped having 3 meals a day.... Best of luck and enjoy!
  21. Pineapple worked for us for a week or so, then it was suggested to re-direct her attention after she pooped so she forgot all about eating it, as when I rushed to pick it up after she made it into a race. Once I got her attention elsewhere she soon forgot about eating it and she grew out of it. She does however still like the cats poop and eats possum poo when we're out walking...
  22. you should be happy with the Advance, thats what we put our pup on...
  23. Chugo what a gorgeous puppy! So fluffy and cuddly and cute, congratulations.. It sounds as though you are doing all the right things. We got our first pup winter last year (ahe is almost 12 months old) and she ate stones too, they would just pass through and she soon grew out of it. She chewed everything pigs ears are great for them to chew on.. She weed inside even when we'd just taken her out, at such a young age the bladder control isnt great but hang in there, just continue the 'toilet' commands and pup will be going on command eventually, just be consistent but remember she is only a baby.. Our girl wasn;t able to hold on all night until about 15 weeks or so maybe earlier... Enjoy your new puppy, shes adorable!
  24. Yes I didn't think so, we have only ever had Zoe so I wouldn't know... Next time though we will let the pup pick us, boy or girl.. Size was our main concern. I think it just depends on the temperament.. It was sure harder to name a girl thats for sure, we had heaps of names for boys!
