  1. Had him vet checked and he's in excellent health.
  2. Well, I've know heaps of Weis (but of the German kind) and none of them ever was whinging or sooky. Does anyone have some construcitve advise? I have the feeling he doesn't even realise that he's doing it. But I certainly am not going to put up with 12-15 years of whinging!
  3. Quen's whinging has just started. he started originally when he was all weir just before we went to Hervey Bay. As he was fine there, I assumed he must have smelled a bitch on heat near my place. When I came back he was all good too. He sometimes had the odd whinge when he was outside wanting to come in or vice a versa. But now he whinges all the time but not like the first time when I think a bitch on heat was around. He whinges in the morning when he can hear that I'm awake (and he knows that without me saying anything or even getting out of bed). He whinges on walks sometimes, when he's inside, when he's outside, when he's with me, when he's with Hera - and it's getting worse!
  4. Quentin is 18-months old and he hit puberty big time. The worst problem I have with him is his whinging. In the morning when I get up and he hears me, he starts whinging. I only take him out of the crate if he stopps. He used to sleep inside but due to his whinging this is no longer possible. He's with another dog he has bonded with. He whinges when he's inside with me or not getting his way/food or whatever it is he demands. I do not give in but he does not stop. When I say 'NO' he just looks at me. I sometimes wonder if he's actually aware of what he's doing. Any advice??? It's driving me nuts!

Great Thread!!! I would be very interested in the difference between the show lines and desert lines. Also is there a big difference between males and females? They would be a fairly quiet breed, which doesn't bark a lot right?
  6. How do you stop the dogs from pushing the pens over? WB, do you use them for your Weis?
  7. Mine have been on Great Barko for a couple of weeks now and it's great! They love it! No problems whatsoever. Very happy with it!
  8. Thanks t-time! I do feel a bit lost as I'm not sure what to do. Hera has a longer very thick coat. She has pulled tick out of herself before but I do check. With Quentin you're right, it's very easy. He never had a tick in his life. And neither of them ever had fleas either.
  9. Despite the cost I don't like to shuff (sp? ) chemicals/ pesticide down my dog's throat or put it on their coat.
  10. Well, I don't know... So Proban I give 1 tab every 2nd day per 10kg? That would work out 100 tabs per month. Not sure if I want to do this out of several reasons....
  11. Proban isn't really on the budget side of things... I lived here for 2 years now and never ever had a tick on mine. I think I might go with the Frontline spray. As they go for a swim nearly every day anyway I don't mind spraying them that often.
  12. I know there're a few topics about this but they were all too old, I couldn't reply to any. I used Interceptor & Advantix previously and just run out and have to order new stuff. I don't want to use Advantix anymore as both of my dogs were unusual lethargic for a couple of days after application and I've heard the same from several people, so too risky to use it (who knows of the long-term problems). I actually haven't had a tick on them since I moved out here but it is a scrubby cattle area so maybe I just been lucky so far. Anyway I'm not going to risk anything. I'm on a bit of a budget as well in the moment, so I cannot afford anything to expensive. I was thinking of changing over to Sentinel & Frontline Plus Spray. Does anyone has any comments about the spray compared to the spot on treatment? Is there anywhere where I can get it online? Normally buy at Priceless Pets. I don't want to use a Tick Collar and I have a lot of problems keeping my dogs dry (they LOVE to swim), so I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!
  13. Interesting thread! My Weimaraner has a bit of a sensitive stomach and I've tried a LOT of different dog foods and BARF until finding Orijen which worked wonders on both of my dogs actually. But that also meant I had to miss out on some stuff as a growing Weim eats a lot and the hole in my budget got bigger. Now Orijen is out of the question and I tried more dog foods. Purina One worked pretty well and the Coles stuff neither of my dogs touched. After not feeding them for nearly 3 days (because they refused to eat this food), I took it to the RSPCA and donate it. The only one who liked it was my bird. I started on Great Barko this morning and love the price, the size of the bags and also the size of the kibble plus they're an Aussie company. My dogs loved it and actually chewed their food! Will pos results in a week once I see how they're going on it.
  14. With highly trainable I mean they can do anything! I have a friend in Germany who uses their Weimaraner for herding! Gundogs are smart dogs, they do want to please their owner BUT they mature slowly and due to their high prey drive and their high sensibility, it's harder to train them.
  15. Is there anything in the North Brisbane area???
  16. Not sure what the point of this discussion is??? I can't say anything about Sibes as I never owned one. But Gundogs, they are the most human dogs I ever dealt with....well, the Weimaraner at least. Yes, they have a strong prey and protection drive. They are highly trainable which doesn't mean they're easily trainable. Some of the breeds are extremly versatile and they ALWAYS, ALWAYS want to please their owner. But they are a breed with very high excercise requirements, a 2-3 hour walk a day doesn't do, that's when they become nutty.
  17. Is Hera registered with the CCCQ? She will need to be registered as an associate. You can then enter her in trials as you would any other CCCQ registered dog. You might want to check with other QLDers if there's an issue with registering her after you've already got a pedigree dog registered. I know they limit the number of associates you can register on your membership to 2, and they must be done at the same time if you want 2 and after that you can only register predigree dogs on your membership. Hopefully you can stil register the assocaite after you've got a pedigree dog though... Ok, sounds like i should give it a go! I'm taking Quentin to obedience training on Friday night and ask them how I go about it. Maybe they can assess her and than put her in a high class and of we go to a trial. FHRP, no she isn't registered with the CCCQ as he's not a purebreed. Or can you register x-breeds? I will contact the CCCQ and find out.
  18. LL, I would be interested in the comment of your friends regarding a Weimaraner from Germany. I don't know what the issues were or where they've got theirs from, but maybe you could PM me details? Oviously it's a German Breed and the German Weimaraner Club takes great care of breeding for temperament, hunting ability and conformation. German Weimaraners have to go thru strict tests to be allowed to be breed. I have never heard of an aggression problem (with the exception of wrong ownership) BUT German Weimaraners have a much higher protection drive than the Australian one I know (=Mannschaerfe). It's a trait of the breed which I haven't observed over here which personally sadens me. But of course you need to know how to handle this trait, this is why in Germany it's very difficult to get a Weimaraner. Weibritty, would be great if you could PM me the deatils! I'm keen to learn!
  19. Hera is a nearly 10-year-old Kelpie x GSD which I adopted nearly 10 years ago from the RSPCA. She's done obedience, herding, agility and flyball. Back then cross breeds weren't allowed to participate in trials, so I never did, also she was good enough. We moved to Germany in 2004 and she was able to gain titles in agility and Schutzhund, she also participated in Rally-O. Now I've got Quentin, my 12-month-old Weimaraner and I train him in retrieving, tracking and SAR. But of course he also has to learn obedience so I normally practice with Hera and him together as Hera is extremly obedient and does everything without me saying a word. So, yesterday we went for a long walk and a swim and then I placed Hera on the side so she can have a rest and practised obedience with Quentin. After Hera rested a bit she joined us and was so keen to participate and really enjoyed the work. I can't do much with her any more as she has arthritis and she isn't the fastest anymore. I don't want her to jump or do anything too exhausting for her. We do Rally-O at home and she absolutley loves that. So I don't know why but I'd like her to participate in a trial in Oz, as she was born here and will die here, I want her to have the opportunity to achieve something in her own country (I know, I'm really humanising here). So should I give it a go and try to get her Obedience title? How do I go about a cross breed entering trials? Thanks so much for the info!
  20. Thanks for the replies. There don't seem to be too many people who hunt with their dogs. I have a 1-year-old Weimaraner. We're training in tracking and retrieving but also go hunting - so far only rabbits and foxes. I don't think I can shoot well enough for a bird, so I like to stick to things on the ground. I've forgotten the Working Retriever website - will have a look there. The reason I'm asking is a) I'm going to get a trained Weimaraner bitch from Germany in a could of years, so I need to know what I'm doing by then and also would like Quentin to be on a similar standard. b) I've heard that there're proper deer hunting trials in NZ and was thinking to participate on one there and am looking for people who might have experience with that. Thank you!
  21. Hi mercedes! Of course I'm still around, just been busy I suppose. Yes I've been showing Quentin and he did well. He won Puppy in Breed at the Brisbane Royal and Puppy in Show at the Gundog Specialty! In between he won and lost - the usual. I still don't really enjoy showing but well, you gotta do what you gotta do. We've done heaps of work in regards to search & rescue, retrieving and tracking which we both enjoy a lot! I'm not keen on obedience and neither is Quen so we give that a miss. I also started to hunt and am training Quen to come hunting with me, that's why I'm looking for some people who do the proper hunting field trials. Here in QLD hunting is extremly regulated and therefore difficult. I know in NZ they have proper hunting tests and I'm thinking of taking Quen over there to participate. I'm learning via the internet with the German Wei owners and there's one guy in my retrieving group who goes hunting but so far without his pup. I'm looking for people who do hunting with theri dogs so I can learn. Cheers!
  22. Is there anyone here who takes theri Gundog to hunting and field trials?
  23. HI there, I did Rally-O in Germany with my old girl and loved it! Been doing it here on my own but in a club would be so much more fun! When are you coming to QLD and where are you going? Thanks!
  24. Thanks! I have the Pine River about 3 km from my place - which comes in really handy! I bought the Ruffwear Floating Jackets. I know they're pricey but worth every cent! I don't use them in calm waters (except to try them out) but when we go to the ocean. http://quentinsdream.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
  25. River would be a great option - but he just will not go in far enough and swim. He has swum 3 times in his life but since has gone all chicken Really want to get him to learn to enjoy swimming, as I know he loves the water! Funny! I took Quentin to the Dog Pool from when he came to me. He never liked it - always wanted to go out of the water. My old girl loves the water and when we went to the pools I had to drag her out while Quen needed to be dragged in. Then I took them to the river - manily for my old girl and Quen went in and swam and didn't want to come out again. http://quentinsdream.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html
