:D They do look similar - especially on a small avatar pic. I don't think it's the breed, it's the attitude of the people. Keep in mind that a lot of German keep their dogs in a (rented) flat so a raw bone might not not be all that appealing. ;) laffi, I feed my Weim a variety of bones, such as roo tail, offcuts, something else I can't remember the name off I think it's cow throat, as well as whole rabbits, pork trotters ect.

It's not about feeding raw, just about feeding bones and the main problem seems to be the gut perforation. And it's funny, they're saying 'Australia hasn't caught up with the rest of the world yet'. For me personally, I feed what I think is good for my dog and where I can see he/she stives on. My Weimaraner is very sensitive about food. He can't have a lot of chicken and/or fat, so I gotta be really carefull with what I feed. He's not very good with bones (doesn't seem to know what to do with them), he plays with them rather than eat them. My old girl cracks any bone and she then gets very hard prickly stool. So fer her, there will be less and different bones than for Quen. I will give this a go for a while and see how they do and make up my mind then.

I'm German originally andI've been discussing BARF on the German Weimaraner Forum. Interestingly nobody gives their dogs bones as it is heaps to dangerous. It used to be promotedabout 20 years ago but now people don't do this anymore due to all the problems it caused.

It was - I can tell you. I also split the pig head in half and had pig brain all over me. Hm, so you guys don't chop any of the meats... I feed the raw food roll from Big Dog. Haven't been to Canine Country as it's too far. On raw self prepared the calculation says I need to feed my boy (33 kg and he needs to add another 10) 1.4kg and my old girl 500 g (she's 25 kg and should loose a few kg). The raw roll says 20 g/kg - I guess because they're higher in fat.

Hmmm, obviously I must have done something wrong. Ok, here's what I did: First I did my calcs, then I sorted the meat (RMB, offal, muscle meat and mince). Then I decided on which veggies I'm going to use. I don't really want to get into the debate about feeding veggies or not - I'm just going to try and see what seems to be best on my dogs. Then I tried to figure out how to use the chopper, then I chopped all the veggies and noticed that I don't have enough bowls to put them - especially as I just done some and I wanted to have a variety of all of them together. After I chopped the veggies I blended them. Then I chooped some more (as not all of them fitted in my bowl) and of course stupid me left the lid of the blender of and ended up with veggie slop all over the window and curtains. Ah well, then I chopped all the meats and put them together in 5 kg bags. Chopping a tongue is hard work! Of course I weight everything as I went which didn't take long. Then I filled the veggie slop in bags and carried it all downstairs to the freezer. I guess the veggies took me the longest and the chopping of the meat. I thought maybe next time I just freeze it in portion packs and chop the meat when I use it and same with the veggies - just use what's in the house and stick it in the blender. I feed around 2 kg a day. I can get prepared raw food roll for $2.90/kg and I would only feed 1 kg a day of that. Might work out easier for me just not really cheaper. I paid $40 at the butcher and $30 for fruits and veggies, but more than half of them are for the birds and me. I just don't want to have to do all that work and the mess in the kitchen...

Ok, I just finished cleaning the kitchen (it's 12.20) after I've been preparing dogfood since 7 am and it will only last me a week! Do I do something wrong here???
-
Ok, I'm really getting into this. I have more questions: Do I just differentiate between RMB, meat and offal? So things like tongue and heart belong to meat and liver to offal? Also, a few of you recommended fish. Aren't fishbones dangerous for dogs??? Oh and the spreadsheet is great!!!
-
No, of course you wont get arrested. :D But my breeder told me and I found this document: http://www.ncnt.com.au/nutritionforsmallanimals.html Maybe it's only prohibited in Tassie. I don't know. But before I have been told I have to cook offal. I just want to make sure. So what's the right ratio between the different kinds of meat, veggies and other protein sources such as fish? Is there an online calculator???
-
Ah, so I can put the veggies in the blender and they'll be fine? I thought it's illegal to feed raw offal???
-
Ok, I went to the butcher in Virginia (it's actually more a meat supermarket) and this is what I came home with: Pig Head Chicken Offal Mince Pork Trotters Lamb Offcuts Calves Liver Lambs Fry Pig Heart Ox Heart Lamb Heart Ox Tongue Pork Tongue Lamb Flabs I also bought a heap of veggies. I do prefer feeding some veggies. Now my question: Do I need to cook the veggies or just masch them? Do I need to cook any of the meat? I thought I have to cook offal, so that would be heart, and liver. Is that right??? Any idea how I should feed this best? This is my first trial on total BARF.

New Dog, New Mistakes...
oceanaussi replied to oceanaussi's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I had Quen since he was a pup. He never had a bad expereince with the Halti, he just didn't like it. He had a bad experience with the choker once. When I tugged on it his ear was in it and that hurt him. He never had a bad expereince with the coat either. He's fine with taking the collar off, just not on. And yes the collar goes only on when we go for a walk or if visitors come over. -

Thanks for the suggestions pip. I could put a great meal out there for him - he wouldn't touch it when I leave with the old girl. He's got toys and kongs and all that but he stops whatever he's doing when he sees out going out. I tried getting back saying 'no' - I would never leave. Yes, I have tried treats before the walk but as soon as I come with the coat/collar he spits it out and starts shivering. -

Well when I leave him behind with y old girl he's fine. He might whimper a bit but he always whimpers a bit. But when I leave with the old girl and leave him behind he gets all nervous/anxious running up and down the fence line howling and crying. Like I said sometimes he settles, sometimes he doesnt. -
Where do you get things like lamb tongue and salmon head from???? Stupid question, but what is chicken maryland?

Alright, haven't read the entire thread but I printed it all out and will read it later on. I currently feed a mixture of dry and raw because I'm worried that I don't get the right ratios of everything when I just feed raw. Plus kibble is more confinient when we travel. However, I'm thinking of converting over to raw but I personally find it challenging doing the shopping, getting it mixed up, having enough space in the fridge/freezer ect. I have a Weimaraner and they tend to bloat I thought raw might be a safer alternative.

I have a 10-year-old GSD x Kelpie from the pound I made many mistakes with. I learnt a lot since then and she has turned out pretty good in the end. So when Quen, my Weimaraner came along I thought I implement all those things and I will have a great dog straight from the beginning. Didn't quite work out... So finally I realised my mistakes and corrected them. Most of the problems are gone, there're just a couple left. One is, that Quen starts crying when left alone. I know Weimaraners are prone for SA and I've tried to train against it from day 1. But I think I haven't done enough. So now I walk him by himself (also for him to gain some self-conciousness) one day and Hera the next. As soon as I leave with Hera he howls. Sometimes he settles very quickly but other times I still hear him howling 900 m away from my house. Do you think it just needs consistency and he'll learn? Or is there anything else I could do? The second problem with him isn't really a major problem but an annoying one and I just don't know how to go about it. Both of the dogs are crated outside. When I get up in the morning, Quen whimpers a bit as soon as he hears me and when I'm dressed, I come downstairs, let them out and we go for a walk. Quen is exited to go for his walk and likes going on a walk. What he doesn't like it the preparation before the walk. He doesn't come and stand still to get his coat/collar/leash put on. Really annoying. I think the reason for that might be a) he hates the Halti and b) he hates the choker. I used either one or the other on him for our walks as he was pulling so badly. I've got this under control now and walk him on a flat collar but he's still playing up every time before we go for a walk. Can anyone help with this? Thanks!!!

Yay, finally the Weis! QUESTIONS 1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) I own my first Weimaraner now after researching the breed for around 10 years prior. Quentin is 19 months old. 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? The Weimaraner breed was developed in Germany in Weimar. Breeding records from 1891 are available. Weimaraners were bred to hunt with humans. Until today the German Weimaraner Club places pups only with hunters - with some rare exceptions. 3. How common is it in Australia? Fairly common, I'd say. 4. What is the average lifespan? 10-12 years 5. What is the general temperament/personality? The Weimaraner is with appropriate training a versatile hunting dog, which can master its requirements posed in the field, water and forest both before and after the shot. A hectic and an over-passionate dog is not the aim of this breed. Weimaraners communly work with a deep nose, this is important for the work after the shot as well as for finding missing items/people/game. Weimaraners have a high prey drive which is the aim of this breed. Weimaraners were bred to go hunting with their person. They are prone to seperation anxiety and want to please their masters. Therefore they can be easy to train but they're also highly protective of their family. Weimaraners are highly intelligent but get bored easily - so the training needs to be adjusted. A Weimaraner wants to be respected and treated consistently but affectionately and not to be degraded to the bare “command receiver”. Weimaraners mature late at the age of around 2-3 years. 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? I'd say at least an hour plus training plus mental stimulation. Weimaraners are highly energetic but don't just want to run, they also need to think! 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? I'd say no to that one. They're are stubborn and you really have to show them you're the pack leader BUT you also have to do this in a soft and sensible way. They're large dogs with a high prey drive and can cause a lot of damage if not trained properly. 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? In my opinion it can be done BUT they would need training to stay by themselves straight from the beginning. Another dog wouold be great if they have to stay alone for long periods constantly. Weimaraners are prone to seperation anxiety and a responsible owner needs to be careful not to nurture this unwanted behaviour. 9. How much grooming is required? With the shorthairs hardly any. An occaisional brush and bath is all they need. Weimaraners tend not to have typical 'doggy odour'. Care should be taken with their ears, especially in warm, humid conditions or if they swim a lot. I clean Quen's ears once a week in summer. 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? Hm, in general I would say yes. But Quen who is really high energy as well as clumbsy and can be extremly boisterous is like a little lamb around small children and carries their toys for them, walks slowly behind them ect. but I wouldn't take my chances. 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? What the others said... 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) I think most breeders do HD. Not sure on the average results.

Well, the long feathered ones in real, the folded back ones on pics (I think). Hm, they could have been cropped... That's not allowed here, is it?
-
I've got a question: Most Salukis I know have long feathered ears, but I've seen a few ones which actually have feathered ears as well but folded back. Why is that?

Isn't it frustrating? No, I don't think it's the cold. It got a bit cooler but he wears a coat when he goes to bed and he whinges inside as well where it's warm. No, I don't think he's sooking for me. At least not all the time. In the morning when I get up - possibly. Probably more sooking for his walk as he doesn't stop when I come out. He sometimes whinges when I'm right next to him. I too have the impression that he's aware of his whinging. I started using a water pistol and that showed some relief and there's not enough consistency as I cannot spray him while in the bathroom getting dressed.
-
I know Weis a supposed to be clingy and have SA issues. Quentin would't care less if I'm around or not. He does whinge when I'm right next to him, so that can't be it. My other dog is fine as well. She just started treatment on Cartophan and something against incontinence and behaves like a 5-year-old again. If I would know the reason for his whinging and I could work towards it but I don't even know WHY he whinges...
