  1. I'm currently waiting for my Weim puppy to be born. (9 weeks can be so long  ) When he's with me, I will do puppy school and start with Obedience. Does anyone know 'Pine Rivers Obedience Club' in Strathpine? What are your opinions? Later one (once fully grown) I also like to do agility - maybe at PADS - anyone any experiences here? I'm also looking for a flyball and frisbee club on the northside or somewhere in Pine Rivers/Caboolture - any recommendations?

But as I'm getting a Weimaraner I'm highly interested in Gundog Field Trials, Tracking and Retrieving. Does anyone know some clubs around my area? Are there any good books about these sports as I'm an absolut Beginner for this sort of thing.

Any help is highly appreciated! Thank you!!!

  2. Hi there,

if everything works out I'm getting my Weimaraner puppy (a little boy) in about 3 months time. I've already got an 8-year old Kelpie X GSD bitch (desexed). She was my first dog and is pretty independent - meaning when we go for walks and there're other dogs she needs a lot of encouragement to go and greet them, she rather just has a sniff or fetch the ball. She's well behaved but she doesn't like body contact.

When I'm getting the pup I will pick it up from the airport, take the pup to the vet and while he's examining it, I will get the old girl and then introduce them at the vet's. I had second dogs most of the time, she always got along fine with them but now it's a puppy and things might be different. I have a few weeks off when the pup comes and will work from home most of the time until school holiday finishes, therefore I've got quite a lot of time to be with them.

My plan is the following: I don't want to leave the 2 of them alone unsupervised at all for the first ?? months/weeks. The pup will be crate trained, so I can put it there when required. I would like to do one-on-one time with them as the pup and the old girl have different requirements and I also want to give them the opportunity to have some time for themselves. Ok, that's all a bit hard to explain in writing but I mean it like this:

Walk the puppy and my girl seperatly (different requirements), will teach the puppy to stay home alone as well. Take the puppy to puppy school while leaving the old girl home, therefore taking the old girl to the dog park leaving the puppy home. Once the puppy is older and we will start 'serious' things like obedience/agility ect, I will take the old girl with us so she doesn't feel left out. I don't want them to get jealous of each other, so I'm not sure yet how I do things like feeding ect. Normally I always had older dogs, so I feed them first to show Hera she's below in the pack order. But the Weim pup won't stay a pup forever and I don't want him to nag my old girl either, so maybe then I have to change the pack order?

Maybe it works all better than I imagine (probably depends on the pup to) but I just would like to ask for recommendations and advice as long as I still have time to think about it and prepare everything properly. We have a good routine and we (Hera and I) both like it that way but a litte pup has a big impact on both of us and I would like to do this as smoothly as possible. So thanks for helping us!

  3. Thanks for your reply! I think I put it a bit bluntly. Sorry about that! I actually do have a firearm licence, so I know how hard it is to get one and I was just wondering about this, maybe there'd be special rules for hunters or so. I'm not planning to go around shooting things so the Weim can retrieve it! I was just wondering if you really do it with game or if there're other ways and there obviously are different possibilities which appeal much more to me than involving dead animals. I'm also a bit concerned that when they really go game hunting that they might be more into chasing live animals to kill while on walks or in the backyard. I've been told by a lot of Weim owners here in Australia that they'll do that anyway but my German friends with their Weims said that a Weim is not allowed to go and kill something. As you see I'm still learning. I'll have a look at the CCCQ website and hopefully find a Tracking and Retrieving Club so I can have a look beforehand and decided if I'd like to do that. Thanks again for your help!

  4. I'm going to get a Weimaraner soon and although the pup hasn't even been born, I've got big plans for him

I know about Obedience, agility, flyball, frisbee ect and have done courses in that as well. But as I'm getting a little Hunter things like tracking and retrieving are mentioned.

    Now my questions:

Tracking means you lay a track and the dog has to find an article, rigth? And the article could be anything? Is there a Tracking Club around Brisbane (preferbly North Brisbane/Caboolture area) where I can go and have a look at that?

With retrieving I'm not sure at all what it means. Does it mean I shoot something and the dog is going to get it or is the dog going to get something which is still alive? How is this handled her in regards to laws (do I need a weapons licence ect)? If somebody could explain this to me or maybe even point me to a club or something to have a look at that would be great! Thanks!

  5. Makes a lot of sense crate training. Glad, I've learnt about it. Just a few more questions:

Where do I get the crates from?

Which size? I've got a Kelpie and she has a Vari Kennel Size L. She wasn't allowed to fly into Australia with that as they said it's too small (but she did flew all over Europe in it). Now I'm getting a Weimaraner which is a much bigger dog, do I need an XXL then? I might need to buy a new car then as well... Could somebody explain to me how I measure for the right crate? Thank you!

  6. Well, the last thing I want is standing there thinking about what the command was called again  Wouldn't look to good! I think I stick with the English words. What about handsignals? Are they allowed. I thought Hera all commands with handsignals as well so if I have guests or am on the phone or something I don't need to say something but just need a handsignal.

  7. The associate register came into being in Qld 2 years ago from memory, so yes, fairly recent. Sorry to hear that your doggie isnt able to get out there anymore :D . As for commands you can use whatever words you want as long as it's a single word, most commonly people use heel, stand, drop, stay, wait, come etc.

If you want to read the rules for obedience, you can find them HERE .

    Hope that helps  .

Thanks MrsD! Pitty, that they didn't introduce this earlier. We were in Germany 2 years ago, so we didn't notice. Unfortunately when we were in Germany, Hera developed heavy HD and got operated. The OP went well and within no time the vet said she could do everything she was doing before. But she didn't want to. I think she was scared of being in pain again. She does agility in the yard but I wouldn't let her on the A-frame. Anyway, the link is great. Will print this out and start reading. Wont have a puppy for at least 4 months but I'd like to have everything ready when he gets home.

  8. Thanks very much for your replies! Well, I'm German, it's going to be a German dog, would have been nice to speak to him in German as well... Will be funny when I walk with both of them and have to give 2 sets of commands :D

The German language sounds 'tougher' and therefore is great for dog training. But if it might not be accepted I'm better off teaching him English. Now, I will have to find a good book about the competition standards and the words they use. Any recommendations?

That you can enter a crossbred in a competition must be new. When Hera was doing obedience and agility she wasn't allowed to. :p And she was so good at agility - faster than every BC at the Club - unstopable. Unfortunately she's now 8 years old and had an operation due to HD therefore I don't want her to enter any competitions - she wouldn't be up for it as she cannot do everything anymore.

  9. I'm German and I trained my dog in German. As she's a crossbred she wasn't allowed to enter formal competitions anyway. Towards the end of the year, I'm getting a purebred Weimaraner who I'd like to enter competitions with.

Is it true that in these competions all your commands have to be in English?

  10. I'm currently looking for a Weimaraner puppy and when I have a look through the pedigrees there so many abbreviations and I was wondering if there's a webpage or something with them all listed? Titles like TDX, CDX, RRD, ET, QC, NRD etc.

    I'm so clueless...
