I did what I've been told with my first dog: "Don"t take her outside until she had ALL vaccinations" and "Don't walk a puppy." BIG mistake!!! It took me many months to get her to walk properly outside of the yard on the leash. I'm getting a Weimaraner puppy in 7 weeks and I certainly will walk him twice a day. Not sure how long, I'll observe the pup and decide then. Properly between 10 to 30 mins.

Questions About What To Do When The Puppy Comes Home
oceanaussi replied to oceanaussi's topic in Puppy Chat
Thanks to everybody! I see how I go. Maybe I take my girl with me to the airport when I pick the pup up. I would have the pup in the crate so the drive shouldn't be too stressfull. I was going to the vet anyway to get the pup checked and my dog loves the vet and is used to see different dogs there. So I thought it might be easiest to meet there and then go home together. -
I found a club which offered Rally-O (comes close to agidience) but it didn't run well. anybody interested? maybe we can start it back up again? I've seen agility clubs where you can do lower jumps but the A-frame is NOT the thing to do for a dog with HD!

I've trained my older dog Hera in Townsville and that was alright. I then moved and we did some training in Brisbane (southside as I was studying at Griffith) and then moved to Gladstone where we did agility with a private Club. Hera is a cross breed so I couldn't trial her here (man, she was good!). I then moved to Germany and over there it's allowed to compete with a dog without papers. The first class I went to was one which has been recommended to me. The guy who runs it was also the guy to temperament test the dogs after incidents and decided if they have to wear muzzles when going out. We arrived there and about 20-25 offleash rather large (Hera is a Kelpie X) dogs approached us and wanted to check Hera out. She didn't like it, growled and was trying to hide in a shed. "Ah, an aggressive dog", the guy (= trainer) said. I should have left then but I thought "I show you moron what a great dog she is". We then started classes and they were large classes! There was a GSD who obviously had some dominance issues and the owner had quite a few problems just hanging on to him. The situation of the dog was explained but I cannot recall it. Anyway, the GSD always walked to far in front when being heeled. So we were all standing there with our dogs sitting next to us watching how the trainer took the GSD to heel. Whenever the GSD was too far in front, the trainer kicked him with his boot in the chest! I was looking at this in complete disbelieve! I then that aloud for everybody to hear "Come Hera, we go home. We don't need a concentration camp for dogs." and of we went. For people who are not familiar with the German history: You never ever mention Jews, concentration camps, A.H., the 2nd WW ect - it's worse than showing off bombs at the airport believe me! So this 'trainer'-moron was coming after us, screaming abuse and threatening me he would declare my dog as dangerous as it growled at the other dogs. I cannot really repeat here what I've told him but I made sure he will no longer do any training! I then went to a GSD Club who mainly did Schutzhund. Hera won her Schutzhund title there and I gave classes in agility and Rally O.

My boy was born on Tuesday night and now it's getting serious! I will have a closer look at following obedience training classes: * Pine Rivers Obedience Club * Pine Agility Dog Sports Club * Caboolture Sports Dob Obedience Club * Redcliffe Dog Obedience Club * Teamwork Dog Obedience There's also puppy training in Dayboro available and I think I will do that and take him somewhere else for the next level. We've discussed a few of these clubs here before but I was wondering if anyone went to Teamwork Dog Obedience? They sound really good and they're on different locations. I like the possibility to take my dog to different training locations. Anbody here with any experience on Teamwork Dog Obedience?

Retrieving, Field And Tracking Clubs
oceanaussi replied to oceanaussi's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I wasn't able to find these on the CCCQ website I must be blonde... -
My little Weimaraner boy was born yesterday and I have just enrolled him in pre-school and I've also found an obedience club (well, haven't actually decided yet but going to have a look at all of them). As it's a Weimaraner I'm very interested in Retrieving, Field and Tracking and I was just wondering if there're any Clubs around the North Brisbane, Pine Rivers, Redcliffe or Caboolture area? Anyone here a member of any of these clubs? Thank you!

If everything works out, I'm getting my Weimaraner puppy in 2 months time. I had my last puppy nearly 9 years ago and I didn't know much then, so this time I'm having a proper pedigreed dog (had pound dog before), I want to do everything right. As I do have another dog and as I'm not sure yet how they will getting along I decided to put my pup in a puppy pen (proberly better for my new re-designed garden too). I'll put a fence around the pilers for the lenght of the wooden fence and the little house (2.5 x 2.5 m) will also be open. I will put food, water and a dog bed in the house and toys in the other area. When I get the pup I have time of work for about 6 weeks. I want to still have one on one time with each dog and the pup is too small for our long walks anyway. So, I thought when I bring the new pup home I arrange a mutal meeting area where I can introduce the 2 of them with help of my vet and the vet nurses. Then we all travel in the car (pup will be in crate) to my house and I take both of them in the garden. Planning to have the pup on a long lead and Hera (my older dog) can run off if she wants to. After exploring the garden take the pup in the house and let it explore the house while my older dog stays outside. Some playtime with the pup and it probely will be tired soon. Pups still sleep a lot, right? When I see it getting tired I thought to put it in the puppy pen and take my dog inside (so it looks like we're not home). Shoudl I take the pup out of the puppy pen when it wakes up or after a set time? The pup will be sleeping in his crate with Hera and me in the bedroom. Next morning take the puppy out for toilet and a short walk (pup only) and then put him in the puppy pen while I walk my old girl for about an hour. When we come back it's breakky time, then toilet for the pup again and depending on how they get along and how the pup is I'll let it run around the yard or come inside with me or put it in the puppy pen. Same again in the afternoon when I walk my old girl. Once I go back to work the pup is about 3.5 months old. I don't think I want to leave the two of them together that early. So I would put the pup in the puppy pen when I'm at work and let my old girl run around free like she normally does. What do you think about this? I want the pup to feel comfortable and safe in the pen, so I'm very happy to hear some suggestions on how to achieve this. Thank you!

I thought my dog while making her sit in front of me with a treat in my hand saying "Thank you" and slowly pushing her paw up with my hand from behind her paw. As soon as she lifted it up I repeated the command and gave her the treat. She learnt it pretty quickly but originally I thought her to lift her right paw, but obviously my dog is left-handed then she never lifted the right paw only the left!

How To Teach A Male Dog Not To Lift His Leg?

How To Teach A Male Dog Not To Lift His Leg?
oceanaussi replied to oceanaussi's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Well like I said I just don't want to have on every tree during our walks and I've heard that you can train them not to do so - I just don't know how. I can't take on a female as I've already got one and she would not accept another female around. @PAX: Yes that's what I mean! When I walk my girl she's on the leash at the begininng and she has a pee but then she wants to sniff and pee everywhere and she meanwhile knows where she can and can't sniff. She definetly marks territory most of the times! All boys I had so far lifted their leg in everything, so it went girl pees, boy pees on top, girl wanted to have another sniff.... The walks just streched too long. I want to avoid that in future and be able to say "Now we're walking and all you do is walking" and then when we reach the beach or park and I take them off-lead to say "Of you go and do what you want". It's a bit hard to explain but I hope you know what I mean.... edit: Actually, I don't mind the dog to lift his leg but I don't want him to mark everywhere. My walk goes past residential areas to a large area where they can do what they want and then back via the main street. I just want to avoid that he starts marking every post in the main street and things like that. -
How To Teach A Male Dog Not To Lift His Leg?
oceanaussi replied to oceanaussi's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
How did you teach your dog not to lift the leg, spotted devil? Dogmad, no, I'm not talking about toilet training. I'm talking about territory marking. I didn't know that non-dominant males continue to squat! Obviously I must have had always dominant males. I have a dominant girl and she squats everywhere, my walk will be so much longer if I get a male who lifts his leg as well. I don't want them to go in the garden, so it's fine for them to do their business when we walk, I just don't want to have to stop at every tree... I hope that gives some clarity... -
Hi there, I'm hopefully getting my Weimaraner puppy soon. I had male dogs before but they were all entire and lifted their leg. I know heard that you can train them not to do that. Does it work with entire males as well? Will desexing automatically stop him from lifting his leg? How do I train him not to lift his leg everywhere? Thanks for your advice!

Hey Kim, is this correct you brought a new puppy home while having a 17-YEAR-old Kelpie X? I'm in a similar situation. I've got a 8-year-old Kelpie X and she doesn't mind other dogs - as long as there not too many and as long as they don't sniff her butt ) - and as long they're not in her yard. I'm getting a Weimaraner puppy early March and I also have 4 weeks off to get them sorted. I'm a bit scared how my old girl will react. She's very attached, tend to be jealous and doesn't like body contact. I just added a couple of Indian Ringnecks to my family and she leaves the room when they're there although they haven't even tried to harrass her. Not sure how she will react to the puppy... My plan is to take the old girl to the groomer for a bath while I pick up the little boy from the airport. Then I drop the pup of at the groomer for a bath as well (so they smell similarĀ“). The groomer is also next to the vet surgery so I can check the pup and the vet staff agreed to give me a hand introducing them there. A few people disagree with this as they think a vet visit is stressfull but my dog loves going to the vet (she only get her needles once a year but a treat every month), so that's really not an issue. I then will drive the two of them home with the old girl in the cargo area and the pup crated on the backseats. I see how they go but I probably have the pup on the leash when the old girl is around so she can just leave and he cannot follow her. I also have a kind of shed with doors and windows next to a 10m fenceline. I will fence off the other side off it and will keep the puppy in there with the old girl just being around. I will also use this area to put the pup there when the old girl and I go for walks. I plan to feed them at the same time but a couple of meters away from each other and with me in between them. My old girl lived with various other dogs and there was never an issue (only for the first few days she behaved a bit cranky and left out) but lately they were all older than her, so a puppy is something different. I honestly am very concerned but what else can I do? The reason for me to get a pup now is that Hera is still young enought to teach the pup something as she's extremly obedient. Also Hera is my heart dog and if she would die I have the feeling I would die with her, but with another dog I know I gotta be strong and there for him. And I think he'll be the only reason to keep me out of hospital in the dreadful event. Sorry, this is a long post but I'm curious to hear other peoples opinions too.

I face the same problem soon too and am really concerned. I've got an 8-year-old Kelpie X bitch (desexed) and getting an 8-week-old Weimaraner boy in February. My old girl never really cared too much for other dogs but I mostly had a 2nd dog living with us but they were always older. I will take the first month off when th pup arrives and keep an eye on them. When I go back to work, the pup will go in a puppy pen, so it cannot bother the old girl too much. I hope they will have settled a few months after that. What do you guys think?

Well, it's still faily new I think. Like I said a mixture between agility and rally-O. As far as I'm aware it's quiet popular in the USA and Canada. It was heaps of fun and despite old dogs we also had a lot of puppies in the class. As they aren't allowed to jump until fully grown makes it heaps more fun to practice obedience and chuck a few agility things in, so I will be easier later on. If agidience isn't offered here (what I assume I haven't even been able to find rally-O), I will enquire what I need to do to start up a course at a local club. Don't want the Oldies to miss out!

My 8-year-old kelpie X loves agility. But due to her age and the fact that she had HD and is now frightend of things like the A-frame, we started 'Agidience' when we were back in Germany. It's a mixture between agility and obedience. The jumps are very low and there's no weave poles and no A-frame but instead there are obedience excercises to do. It's excellent for older or handicaped dogs. I actually ran courses in Germany. Does any of you know if something like this is offered here in the Brisbane/Caboolture area?

Very interesting topic! I've got an 8-year-old Kelpie X. She was great in agility but as a X not allowed to compete in Australia. I went to Germany a few years ago and she competed there - winning a European title for X-breeds. She also did the Schutzhund successfully. Unfortunately she got HD and after the operation we did a lot of physio until the vet cleared her to do everything again. But I also moved back to Australia, so there's not much I can do with her here. I can notice she's getting old. Although I don't really have the choice of retiring her or not, I decided not to join an agility club anymore. Due to her condition I don't want her to jump anymore. I've got a little agility course at home with the things she liked. I have a few jumps in there but only the long ones. The walks are shorter these days too as she goes to sleep straight afterwards. I'm doing more obedience training with her and these days try to keep her mentally occupied rather than physically. I do more obedience, I tried light-tracking but she's hopeless at that. She still has days where she runs around in circles and jumps and carries on but other days she just wants to lay out in the sun. We do a lot of swimming and she absolutly loves it but she doesn't know when to stop. I can see that she's getting tired and I really have to drag her out of the water because she doesn't want to get out but I'm afraid she'll cramp or gets too exhausted - and she's a far better swimmer than me. I think you should just take it more easy. Your dog will want to please you as well, keep that in mind. Just see how it goes. Good luck!

Thanks guys! I highly appreciate your effort! The Vet here in Dayboro offers Pre-Puppy Classes, so I will book him in there. I just hope they'll be happening as I'm getting my boy mid-December and that's close to school holiday... Well, let's wait and see... I will go to theses clubs and have a look beforehand so I then can decide which one we will go to. I drive 110kms to and from work every day - I really like to have something closeby.

Thanks very much for all your replies! Looking forward to start obedience training with my pup! Unfortunately I'm not a member of the CCCQ yet and from their webpage I cannot get any infos about retrieving and tracking... @Mysticview: What club is the one which trains at the PR Showgrounds? I'm keen to trial in obedience therefore looking for a really good club/instructor. Thanks everyone!
