What Don't Most People Know About Your Breed?
Sayly replied to RallyValley's topic in General Dog Discussion
LOL - I have had people ask me if i've shaved Sophie! Because she's not fluffy enough to be a German Sheperd? Or asked me what she's crossed with to not be blacker. Sigh. SHES A PEDIGREE GERMAN SHEPERD! And no, Chase's blue eye does not make him a Husky. Lol. WTF!? :D Haha, I got asked all the time when Lottie was a pup if she was a Husky and if not SURELY she's crossed with one!!! :D Didn't you know though, blue eyes ALWAYS equal Husky! No other breed of dog has blue eyes, and any that do are "blind". -

Oh and IRISH NEED GROOMING! Their coat needs regular work to keep it the way it looks for the show ring. It surprises me how many show people think their coat doesn't need work. It does, alot of work actually and it's not easy to get right. We are still learning after several years of showing her. -

;) LOL - I have had people ask me if i've shaved Sophie! Because she's not fluffy enough to be a German Sheperd? Or asked me what she's crossed with to not be blacker. Sigh. SHES A PEDIGREE GERMAN SHEPERD! And no, Chase's blue eye does not make him a Husky. Lol. Get this one too! Holly HAS to have Husky in her. Same as Aussies! But my Aunty is dead set that I'm cruel and Holly is un-happy because she's not on a farm. Cause my aunty knows so much about dogs... I agree with this Gayle, and also add... No, I didn't chop off half her tail (she has a long bob tail) No, she is not a husky cross dalmation ! (merle with blue eyes!) Yes, she can see out of her blue eyes... what colour are yours! Blue? Can you see fine? I get all of the above with Holly too Nik. I love Dally smiles! Aussies smile too! I find farmers are the worst for TELLING me Holly is a Koolie. It's like didn't you notice the extra coat, different head, more bone, oh and lack of tail? The Koolie question and the tail question are the most common I have found. I think if I had a black or red tri we would get more BC comments. I get lots of "oh isn't she pretty" comments though, and then when she rolls over on her back for belly scratches they comment on how sweet she is. So they make up for the dumb questions. And Ruby the Irish Terrier... she isn't a small Airedale, or a funny-coloured foxy. Neither is she a "Whiskey Terrier" WTF! LOL And the Lakeland next to her is full grown and is not a baby Irish. That really confuses people at the Royal. -
Ok. I don't mind the ears in the pic though! Tell Peach to send those ears to Maizie please! Sparky's face looks like Holly's when Maizie and Beau are naughty. "I didn't do it Mum, honest!"
-
With the Aussies I want a black or red tri next because it means I don't have restrictions on the stud I use (merle to merle matings can produce blind and deaf pups). Thankfully the bitch listened to me and gave 8 tri colours and only one merle. I love the red merle Aussies but I would have taken any colour for my first, Holly just sort of happened and she's perfect. I used to love the deep dark red merles but Holly has swayed me! I think however, my dream Aussie would be a black and white (no tan) male natural bob tail. Dad is dead set on a red mini bull terrier. He will wait until the right one comes along, both in colour and personality. I wouldn't take on a mismarked Aussie simply because I love showing and hope to breed in the future. Doesn't mean I don't like them and some can be very stunning.

This sounds like sister Maizie! We say Beau is her henchman! We are sure it's her ideas but he's the one who physically completes the naughty tasks. Oooo OT but I love the new trolley! And look at Peach's ears! ETA: How did you end up with the naughty Tuscamada bitch? You attract naughty dogs me thinks! At least you know your lot are enjoying themselves!

What Breed To Recommend To Young Family?
Sayly replied to ZAUBISTAR's topic in General Dog Discussion
An older, calmer Aussie Shepherd from reg breeder sounds suitable then. Or the right puppy. -

Had an international judge today do this with my non-rare breed. Same judge didn't watch as I was coming back to him on the out and back... was too interested in his jacket zipper! So when stopped, went back and did it again so he COULD see her lovely movement. Got BCC and RuBOB! In another ring with my non-tabled, rare breed, the judge asked me to table her... I stopped and had a "huh" moment and he asked whether I would prefer her on the ground instead... yes please! I don't think they get many of them in his country!

The flyball demo was awesome! Seemed to be more members of the general public there today than normal!

What Breed To Recommend To Young Family?
Sayly replied to ZAUBISTAR's topic in General Dog Discussion
Dalmatians aren't easy dogs to own, they are very active, happy boisterous dogs who would easily knock all three of the kids over in one happy zoomie. They are some of the sweetest dogs though. I would personally reccomend them to a younger family but sound otherwise pretty good if they are pretty active! A calmer Aussie Shepherd from the right breeder may also suit, if they like working dogs and are happy to put in some effort for training and exercise. Good watch dogs who aren't overly noisy (although they like to talk while playing). What sort of personality do they want? If they like your GSD does that mean they want a people-focused breed like a working dog and some gundogs? -
I'll be set up near ring 5 (working dogs) and will have Holly with me and a couple of other Aussies, plus the Irish. What day do you think you will come down?
-
There's always Sibes! I know of at least two different people who have shown Lappies here in SA, fingers crossed a least one of them comes out!

Rspca Shelters In Uk To Turn Away Unwanted Pets And Strays

I never saw ANYONE saying irresponsible pet owners weren't in the wrong. -
There are occasionally one or two Lappies out, would love to see some more. ETA: But none that I can think of lately.

Not that I know of Esky. What breeds are you interested in, we might be able to give you an idea? Judging starts at 9am and breeds are judged in alphabetical order in their own group (toys, terriers, gundogs, hounds, working dogs, utility, non-sporting), all groups are being judged at the same time. On Saturday however, Labrador Retrievers will be judged at 9am instead of in their normal place within the group, and on Sunday Golden Retrievers will be judged at 9am. Hope this makes sense to anyone interested in coming for a sticky beak!
-
Saturday there will be Earthdog training in the early afternoon. Mum's taking Gracie out.
-
Yes Esky! Come and check it out. Just a couple of common sense things though: don't bring an aggressive dog with you (to people or dogs) and don't ask someone something if they are about to go into the ring! Ask before you touch a dog, it may be groomed up ready to go in the ring. It's a great weekend of shows, I'm excited! A great opportunity to see a large selection of wonderful dogs of many different breeds.
-
I regularly show a rare breed (non-tabled), some tabled dogs of well known breeds (but not many exhibited at the moment) and a non-tabled, flashy breed that gets 5 - 10ish dogs per show entered. I have found with the rare breed we almost always are given no time to stack up. It's in, start stacking and the judge is there already. This isn't a flashy or popular breed and doesn't get put up much except under specialists. The table breed and the flashy breed are given much more time to stack up generally, especially the tabled breed. It does annoy me, with the rarer breed I feel it gives a view of being uninterested in the breed. Whether that's the case or not I don't know.

I feel your pain.....my mum tells me all the time we are cruel for keeping sally in suburbia mind you she gets walked, played with, trips to beach/parks...but we are cruel Yep..."Hey shouldn't that dog be on a farm??" What? This one? On the couch next to me? Riiight...... Holly is happy doing whatever I am doing. When I'm at OH's parents' farm she's always with me and goes all day. If I am studying for exams she's laying on the bed behind me or at my feet. And she's not destructive, she's well behaved and always has a smile on her face! :D She doesn't care that she's "supposed to be on a farm", she just wants to be where I am!
-
I think Tank's handler being on his own in a situation in which there was a weapon mentioned meant he was happier for Tank to be much more in their faces. No way I would have gone near Tank's handler! Tank's handler had to get the group inside and break up fights, the bitch's handler was just searching for people. They were doing different jobs. The other guy with the bitch was dealing pretty much with kids. But I am no dog trainer! Just my opinion. :D

He sounds like Ruby! She's a princess! Originally they were the poor man's dog (ratters, guard dogs, occasionally used to retrieve) anyway. Our old Irish wasn't a princess in any way, but Ruby sounds like Harry! Not very princess-y when she eats possums.
-
Irish Terriers were the poor man's farm dog. Nothing "snobby" about them.
