  1. Tia my border collie is the hardest I have to had to train "catch", but one thing I do is in the mornings she doesn't get fed until she catches. Doesn't take that long. As soon as she catches gets her food bowl. Check out the trick section for other ideas.
  2. I have the only Flatcoated Retriever competing in flyball in Australia, I have also seen a Irish Setter, Mini Schnauzer.
  3. Is there any herding training happening in Sydney at the moment, I am down here for a couple of weeks with my dogs.
  4. Try lifting his paw for him and saying "paw", not all methods work for all dogs.
  5. Emmala you and me must be very similar I spent a lot of time practicing footwork without the dog!!! Front and rear crosses to learn were a nightmare. I think because I was so busy trying to remember what foot and leg to use and where to put them. But I found when I didn't think about what I was doing, it worked out better!!! I spent a lot of time also learning how to work the dog on the lead for CCD, because Moses had always been taught off lead.
  6. You can also email Joe Parsons who makes the toys and send him the link he would probably love to see it and may put it on his website. I don;t think there is a proper way to play with it, they are all different.
  7. Moses has one too. Its interesting to watch the different styles of playing with it.
  8. Did you get to work more with your dogs this year? I found it was a lot of sitting around watching other people one by one work with their dogs. I did a Richard Curtis seminar and he was great, he would have half the group on the floor working on an exercise and then switch them over. Yep I enjoyed the lunch time games last year, we won best trick. Where did people go for the day off? The Heelwork to music comp sounds like fun. Where you allowed to video this year? How many people were there? Many repeat people?
  9. Was just wondering what people thought of Mary Ray this year? Also wondering how it compared with last year for those who went twice, and is anyone thinking of booking in again to go next year, who went this year or last year?
  10. Check out the relevant trick threads, and put your questions there, you might get some answers. Tia was hard to teach roll over using food she seemed to get a little bit anxious. So what I did as soon as she did she got a tummy rub. Now she offers rollover for a tummy rub, spin is quite easy you can use food or targetting method. Check out my web page as well http://www.dogtrick.741.com
  11. Here is Moses doing high 10's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XoxsHhJ_rA
  12. Is this what you mean Step 1 Step 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqhaJEOtXb4 I used food in the hand I think.
  13. With Moses in obedience, I would arrive at grounds take him for a little walk and check in. If the ground is wet then I will practice some drops with lots of rewards, then I put him in the car until 1 or 2 dogs before we go in, and do a small amount of practice, maybe 2 sits in heeling or something to get him in working mode. Then I grab 3 treats and give him treats on the way to the ring, so that by the time I am in the ring the treats are gone (don't want to cheat). Moses is a dog who loves heeling. As soon as I am finished we run out of the ring (I once jumped over the ropes), and I play and give him lots of rewards, far enough away from the ring so I don't distract any other dogs. In between exercises I do high tens with him. In flyball I go out just before the team before us is in and walk them around to empty out, then we just go into the ring and sometimes don't even bother with recalls, they know what they are doing.
  14. Read over the teaching your dog to catch http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=7358 You use the same principles, if the dog does not catch the food he doesn't get to have it, I actually started this trick with Josh using a tennis ball, may be you could try that.
  15. Do you mean like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGSXEkvkgAs
  16. Why don't you change the trick to taking a hanky out of the tissue box, or out of someone's else's pocket. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFbZUmQoYU4
  17. With my dogs I never teach "look at me" command, but whenever I am heeling they always get rewarded when looking at me, or if I am in line waiting for our turn at agility and they happen to look at me, I will reward this, this way they offer it without me asking.
  18. You need to build up distractions gradually, and at first only call her when you will know she will come. If she doesn't come the first time, move closer towards her and call her again. Always food or toy rewards when she comes.
