Keep reading the instructions and make sure you follow them to the letter. Here are a couple of videos that I did with Tia when she was a puppy. Here she is just being rewarded for making contact with the dumbell. As soon as she touches it, I take it away and she gets her reward. Notice the date on this video, December. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=TNpDBuvY6u4 Here she is just starting to retrieve the dumbell. Notice the date is January, so has taken a few weeks. I just follow the steps exactly to the letter. She is being rewarded for dropping the dumbell into my hand. I didn't ask for her to sit, she just did. My criteria is for the dumbell to land in the hand. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=zr-l0rbOPik I have used this retrieve training as a basis for other tricks. Notice in this video of Moses retrieving the trolley, that he puts the handle of the trolley into my hand. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=1tfHMqLveRo

Ben is a nice looking GSD. I taught Moses to beg and wave at the same time. It is hard though.

Have you tried attaching the ball to the box with velcro. Teach the dog to get good at getting the ball from off the box, and then start to load the box with the ball. Or try a untriggered box. Have been working at retraining Tia to turn to the right. I am glad that I did it. Also just to show you that you don't need to own a flyball box to do training. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSKOH6QoLKs It didn't take that long. She is still a little slow off the box, but she is still in the early phases of learning. Have to start practicing on a proper flyball box. Today was the first day at training her with 4 jumps. Here is her turning to the left. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=uYouHEM_g9I

With Moses, I did two on two off, and also nose touch. Found with the nose touch that he started doing handstands at the end of the agility contact. With Tia have been doing 4 on the floor, I think quicker to teach because the dog knows exactly what to do. I just say drop. Two on two off is much more precise. Tia likes to drop.

Have Retrained Tia To Turn To The Right In Flyball
whatevah replied to whatevah's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
When I can get to training, and start training her on a proper flyball box, you will see her. I don't own a flyball box, a bit expensive. I have some velcro which sticks to the turning board, Tia jumps on the turning board and takes the ball off the velcro, you may be able to see it on her other video clips. She is 18 months old now. Once we add the proper flyball box it may speed up her turn a little. Forgot to mention another little habit. She would run up to the box and try and get the ball straight on without jumping on the turning board first. What I did was never to reward that. I also got my husband to stand behind the turning board and if she tried that he simply put his hand over the ball so she never got it. -

I would definately go over. I think the whole ferry would be mostly flyballers, could have a party on the way over. I think it would only be fair for the Tassie people, because if nobody went then they couldn't have a comp. Tassie people don't worry too much about being carded, a lot of our dogs started out that way. Moses used to love to try and get the other teams ball out of their box before their dog did. He hasn't done it in a long time now. We got plenty of cards, but none for agression.

Great to see them and they got their first titles!!! Cost them $3,000 to do the comp.

Also heard that it was supposed to be a surprise!!! Oh well, horses for courses. I think a lot of people pay too much for weddings. They would be better saving the money for other things.

I went and helped out with the time keeping. Much more fun running a dog though. -
Have heard the rumour is true that two people are getting married at the competition.

Josh is much better now. He never had kennel cough, it was pancreatitus. Our next door neighbours have moved. !!!!! the complaining ones. The new ones have a little dog, and they told us they don't mind if our dogs bark, because dogs are dogs. I told them to let us know if they do. -

Just rang the vet and they found out that he has pancreatitus. We should be able to get him home in a couple of days. He has to be on a low fat diet, which I think he is anyway. He will be out of action for awhile. Usually only fat dogs get this. But after reading the link, I had given him some sausages but that was about 10 days ago, so I don't know if that brought it on. http://www.vetstop.com.au/info/Pancreatit.asp The thing with the neighbours is still going on. They were the only neighbours to object. They even complained about the dogs moving their food bowls on the decking in the mornings. -

He is on a drip. He did a flyball demo at Stonnington and also a flyball demo at the RSPCA the next day. This was not last weekend but the weekend before. I noticed that when I got from Fiji about 4 weeks ago that he was thinner. I wouldn't be surprised if something else is going on. Last year he had a twisted bowel and they also noticed crystallization in his urine. They want to take an x-ray of his lungs. Tia had kennel cough once, and only coughed for 2 days and she was fine. Moses has never had it. Have let the flyball lists know. He is 7 years old. I also noticed this year he has started to slow down, not sure if that is age. I know that flatcoat retrievers age more slowly than golden retreivers. Just as well I don't have any dogs down for the Ringwood flyball competition. I usually don't have my dogs in comps in the summer months, gives them a chance to rest. -

Josh is sick with kennel cough. He is not eating, and has stuff coming out of his mouth, and eyes. He is very weak. He is at the vets at the moment and is losing weight. Any other dogs here has kennel cough this bad? -
I never knew about this. They must be crazy!!!!!!!!!!

Okay if you look at pages 234 - 237, then look at the diagrams on 239-241, they are actually telling you to do different things. The diagrams look like the channel method but pages 234-237 look like something different. One is telling your dog to go through both sets of poles spaced out at the sides, but the diagram is saying go through the middle. Hard to explain. Do a search for Susan Garrett on youtube and you can see some of her videos. Here is one on crate games, http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=ebjBo_spqG0&feature=user

I usually get quite good focus from my dogs. One thing I train is to walk around in anti clockwise circles and click and treat whenever the dog is in the right position and looking at me. Also if I am waiting around with my dog on lead, I will often click and treat her for just looking at me, I don't ask I wait for it to be offered. At flyball she has an issue with running working dogs, so I reward her a lot for looking at me. Here is an example of him at a club comp.

Gambit (poruse Diamond Dealer) Td & Now Ccd

I didn't think there was retrieving in CCD???? There is in Novice. Novice is pretty easy too, you shouldn't have any problems with it. -
No the articles really clear it up. If you have her book "Shaping for Success" it has the method right at the back of the book with some pictures and diagrams, I can bring it and show you if you like. I am in the 8.15am class at Croydon on Sunday.
-
Another idea is to get someone else to click the clicker from a fair distance away, and gradually get that person to come closer. As soon as they click you treat. I would do about 5 repetitions at each distance and do it gradually. My dog has done competition obedience and he never worrys about what people are doing outside the ring, as his attention in on me. He also doesn't run to everyone who clicks a clicker either.
-
Why don't you just wait for the dog to offer a drop. Then click and treat. Just sit on a chair and read a book or whatever, because the dog cannot stay standing forever. Ignore everything else it does and don't say anything. Once the dog has dropped, then throw the treat so the dog has to get up again and get it, then wait for the drop again. Once the dog is doing it well add the word. Here is Tia as a puppy going to her mat and lying down. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncPaawvB29E

I used Susan Garrett 2 x 2 method with Moses, I was able to send him to do the weaves whilst standing on the decking. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfNduEBWaYk With Tia at Action Dogs we were using wire barriers next to the weaving poles and taking them away, now I am at Croydon and they are using the 2 x 2 method. Found it a little confusing as a long time since i taught it. The pictures in the book are a bit different to the diagrams. The instructor is also teaching a bit different to the book. Have downloaded and printed those the article you put up Leopuppy. At Croydon they were getting 2 pairs and spreading the way out and sending the dog through each individual pair, instead of gradually moving them in.

Start off with a small step, about a couple of inches high, then when he/she can do that work up to higher steps. Once they get the idea it become easy.
