Ok, What Are Ccd & Udx Classes?
whatevah replied to MrsD's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I am also going for the first time in the ring doing CCD. I think I will lose bucket loads of points, through doing things I aren't aware of such as giving extra signals. I am doing CCD because it gives you a title. When I get to Novice I will do the retrieve as my dog finds it very reinforcing. -
Moses and I will be doing our first trial too, CCD.

Tollers owned the entry closing date for the Golden Retreiver Club one is today!!!!! Yiou can still enter. I will be going and I think the token rep for the the tollers. LOL Geelong Obedience Dog Club is back to back trials, morning and afternoon on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th,. So you could enter 4 trials if you wanted to. There is camping available for $5 on the grounds. I am going to the golden retriever one and seriously thinking about the Geelong comp. Geelong comp closes on June 23, (Friday). These were both advertised in the VCA magazine pages 10 & 11 of May issue. http://www.geocities.com/vicobedience/

Anybody going to these trials? The first one is restricted to gun dog breeds and at KCC Park, the second one is the weekend after at Geelong,.

Congrats, I am not even thinking about that title, I would just be happy for Moses to get AFCh as Josh has, then I call it a day, have the points been updated?

Retrieve Another Dog By the Lead Uses Fun trick, and you can get your dog to get your other dog, without you having walk up and get him yourself. Equipment Needed Two dogs, Long Lead (170cm or more), Clicker, Food, Prerequisite Dog doing retrieving must know retrieve, dog being retrieving must know how to come and to do a stand stay or wait. Dogs should preferably know each other and get on well. Dog doing the retrieving should be bigger than the one being retrieved. It would be very hard to teach a cavalier to retrive a new foundland. I have taught Moses my Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, 18kg to retrieve Josh my flatcoated retriever 34kg, so it can be done. To learn retrieve go here http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=10632 Method Step 1 go to http://www.shirleychong.com/keepers/retrieve.html and follow all steps, take your time and don't rush the dog, make sure you meet the criteria for a step before moving to the next step. Instead of a dumbell you are going to use a lead. Now if you have done this before with a dumbell, it should go a lot quicker. If your dog is like mine, where I simply just looked at the lead and he went and picked it up and brought it to hand you may be able to cut out some of the steps in the clicker retrieve. Do this step in a distraction free area without any dogs around. Step 2 You now are going to place the lead on the ground, when he brings it back and places it into your hand you click and treat. Do this for about 5 repetitions placing the lead at various distances. Step 3 You are now going to place the lead on top of a chair, to get him used to retrieving objects above his head. Do about 5 reps. Step 4 Now place the lead across two chairs that are spaced apart, this is to get him used to getting the lead in the middle, and pulling it off the chairs to bring to you. Do this for about 5 reps. Step 5 Now place the lead on your other dog, send your dog and see what happens, do this step from a short distance away. You will need your other dog standing still. Your other dog may resist being pulled by your other dog. When the dog is retrieved and the dog puts the lead in your hand, you then reward both dogs. It is very important to reward the dog that is being retrieved as it is more likely that he will come next time. Trouble Shooting Dog doesn't want to be retrieved. Josh was a bit hesitant as he had no idea what was going on, so I gave him a come signal with my hand low to the ground and then he came. Found that one he knew he was being rewarded he came more readily when Moses pulled on his lead. Will post photos later. This trick took us one session, then a couple of sessions to polish off, and then I took it outside. Here are the photos. To see the video go here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9lvzuYZeTk

Why don't you add your photos to the shake thread? Its great seeing all dogs success.

There are step by step instructions under the dog tricks, at the top of this forum with lots of photos of dogs and cats waving and begging. Taught Moses a new trick the other day, I send him out to Josh my other dog, and he brings him to me on the lead.

We will be there if we don't have a double booking. Don't you hate when you have two dog activities at once, then you wish you had attended the other one that you could have gone to, as the one you decided to go to turned out to be a flop. Hope you can all make sense of that last sentence. Watch out for my toller who loves to go into the blue tunnel at the end in search of the bag that he knows is hiding there.

I would have loved to have gone but had already promises I would help out at the Clicker Quest. So I helped out there, and didn't even get a thank you for my trouble, and I was there since 8.00am and didn't leave till 4.00pm!!!! Is there going to be another lure coursing by the Deer Hound club?

Handlers Spitting Food Or Holding Food In Mouth
whatevah replied to TroysMum's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I think if I was storing food in my mouth, I would start salivatating and probably eat it myself if I was hungry. LOL ) Each to their own. I was watching a freestyle DVD and they were using it to teach side passes. -
Trainabilty: Is It Intelligence Or Compliance?
whatevah replied to Rom's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
This is quite an interesting thread. One day I was at the top of a drive way, and my sleeping bag rolled down to the end about 30m. I told Josh to fetch it and he did. So funny!!!! I had a german shepherd once, that if my golden raced off, she would go and fetch the golden retriever by the ear and bring him back. One day my pet ferret went missing and I told the German Shepherd (Sheba) to find the ferret, and she did. She had never done any find it games, or even knew what a ferret was. The ferret was hiding under the house. -
Handlers Spitting Food Or Holding Food In Mouth
whatevah replied to TroysMum's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I don't like the idea and it grosses me out when I see people putting food into their mouth taking it out and then giving it to their dog. There is no way I am putting a liver treat into my mouth. I always get good attention from my dog and don't need to use this as he is clicker trained, but each to their own. Whatever works. My dog is such a food hound I think this may teach him to jump up at my face. All dogs are different so what works for one may not work for another. -
I may not be able to go as I have a double booking, I am helping with a clicker quest at Lilydale, may be able to squeeze in a go, not sure as I also have agility at Croydon that starts at 9.30am. The whippet lure coursing is only for whippets, I rang and asked.

TRICK OF THE WEEK - Teach Your Dog To Pick Pockets
whatevah replied to whatevah's topic in Dog Tricks
Moses just swipes. When I used to be in the k9 Kompany demo team, I used to get a member of the public out of the audience to put the hanky in their pocket and then send Moses with "Achoo" to go and get it. -
Can other breeds go to the whippet fun day and have a go at the track?

Trainabilty: Is It Intelligence Or Compliance?
whatevah replied to Rom's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have a dumb goofy flatcoated retriever, who is highly compliant, and does not stress, takes a lot longer to teach him new things. He does not generalise well. At lure coursing which he loves, he couldn't understand that the lure was going around in a different direction, at flyball I have to always release him in the exact same manner. My toller who is a lot smarter, is much easier to train but will try and out think you. I was talking to some people on the weekend and found that the smarter breeds can take longer to teach flyball to be reliable as they try to out think you, or they discover that they can just run to the other flyball box and get that ball before the other dog in the lane. Is quite interesting really. Nothing really spooks my goofy dog but my toller is sometimes spooked by new things but then you show him and he is over it. -
Who wants to race my two boys? This could be a fun day, maybe we should move it to social events.
-
I would love to go, I think they were at the Pet & Pony Event at Rosebud once, they loved watching Josh do it and gave us a big bag of dog food. LOL

My mum went to a puppy school at Avalon Vets. She was not happy. They let the dogs run amock. One lesson was spent just talking about health and nothing else, the dogs did nothing. Another session was teaching stays which they taught the wrong way, and only one dog got to try it. No water provided for the dogs, when they did provide water upon request it had possum poo in it. Another person in the class taught my mum how to teach her pup to sit. It is run by a vet nurse. She is very disgusted and felt ripped off. They suggested putting a choker chain on a cavalier pup who is 12 weeks old!!! Quite often class has been cancelled. I have been teaching the pup myself. They charged I $25 a lesson!!! If you do take lessons at a vets ask to see qualifications, just because they are a vet nurse doesn't mean they can teach dog training. Doctors and nurses don't tell us how to bring up kids. I think you are better off going through an obedience club.

Looking For Bowen/chiropractor
whatevah replied to whatevah's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I am in Sydney at the moment and my hubby rang last night and said Josh is back to normal, I told him still to keep resting him and let go for a walk on the lead but no ball chasing. Tony gave Josh an injection to reduce the swelling.
