Pharaoh Hound Doing Obedience/agility
Hyland Mist replied to Hyland Mist's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I cant wait to start doing the serious stuff. At the moment we have done foundtion work with targeting and she picked that up with ease. I dont think I will have a prob, was just wondering if there were any out there. I ve been around the circuit for a while and the only sight hounds i have seen lately are Greyhounds, whippets, Italians.. i see a few doing conformation, they definielty have high energy and I believe thats what puts people off in having them -

HI Delta as mentioned teaches "positive" only. You are not to use correction collars etc. The NDTF shows how to use all types of equipment and training techniques. Cheers -
Pharaoh Hound Doing Obedience/agility

Hi Thanks for the replys and encouragements. We have no probs with the recalls at this stage. I live on 50 acres so recalling was number one lesson. She is my shadow and is very good most of the time, but she is only 12 months so I dont mind if she plays up occassionally, I am looking at doing lure coursing later. I have wanted a pharaoh hound for a long time, ( I love challenges).lol There is something regal about them!! She has learnt a new skill of herding with the Borders (yes its true) Cheers -
Silly me put this question in the wrong forum. Take 2 - Does anyone know if there have been any Pharaoh Hounds Titled in Obed/Agility in Victoria? My girl has started her training and is very receptive to training, (occasionally has moments of feralness) She is on her way to Ch Title for Conformation but I want to achieve more with her. Im already trialling Borders & a GSD. Cheers

Hi Before allowing the dog off lead start doing recalls on long lead in different surroundings, proofing that. Also it would be best to teach the dog to sit & wait when opening a door and u walking out first then call the dog. (on lead ). Try this with any part of the house then the main door. This also helps when getting the dog out of the car. Teach them to wait and only come out when u call them. There is a DVD you can get called Really Reliable recall, it focuses on recalling in all situations. Cheers

Hi I have just about finished the course. Decided to do the course as i regular compete in Ob, agil, herd. conformation, I am also an Instructor at my local club and have my own business. I also am a registered breeder. Apart from the accreditation (which the public like to see) it has given me more insight into the world of dogs - scientifically speaking. Its a great course and you will learn a lot. Cheers

Hi, My dogs compete in whelp in conformation as well as obedience, upto the point where I can see them slowing down. It shouldnt make too much of a difference if the bitch is fit and healthy. I tend to drop flyball and Agility early as they can over heat the bitch, and can cause injury if the dog has a fall. From about five weeks i give them free runs and let them dictate there own pace. It makes fo whelping a lot easier if the Dam is fit. Cheers

First Ever Obedience Trial (ccd)
Hyland Mist replied to KismetKat's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi DD Im an Instructor at my club, after a few weeks of working on stay exercises i start introducing distractions, these may include: - using one of my dogs - rolling a ball - jumping about making noises - finding some kids and getting them to run past, yelling - rattling keys, leads.. anything - Working in the rain & wind etc I also take my classes near where the agility & flyball classes are working and get them to do stays there. Also near carpark, Club verandah..etc I am sure u get my drift on what I am trying to achieve. Cheers -

First Ever Obedience Trial (ccd)
Hyland Mist replied to KismetKat's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi I was at Moorabbin with one of my Borders, silly me had done about 4 hours of herding the day b4 and he was not with it. My GSD had her first trial and got a pass and a place (AM) but in the PM trial her heeling was good, she refused downs and sits during the heeling pattern. I always withdraw if I am noy sitting on a pass.(Both in CCD) 2 Trials were too much for her on her first outing. The judges we had were fantastic and helped out where they could with suggestions. I also trial in Open and have come across only 1 judge to be rude, and tell me that my dog is too exhuberant and needs to be calmed down. She is 7yo, loves the ring and I would rather that then trial a dog that needs a lot of motivation and ring wise. Good luck with your trialling. Its good fun and you get too meet a lot of good people. If you start taking seriously you start making mistakes and getting frustrated and its not worth being there. Cheers
