  1. Bull breeds only look scary to someone to has been raised to see them they way. Or influenced by the media perhaps. Calling them ugly is very different to being concerned they might look scary, all it does is make sure the rest of your point will be missed.
  2. Maybe your daughter's perception is being influenced by the fact so many of the dogs she meets are chained up? My son is 2 in June and he adores all dogs, they are the highlight of his day. He has been raised to see them as a family member to love, enjoy and respect. I imagine mostly seeing them chained up outside would not have encouraged him to develop the same level of interest.
  3. My girl is the same, has lived with cats and a rabbit without any issues. She met the neighbours cat last week on our front lawn and once she decided she didn't need to be scared she was quite happy to say hello. Her prey drive kicks in occasionally when she sees a small animal run but her recall is good.
  4. When asked how much work it is to have 3 dogs I have usually answered that I really have 2 dogs and Kiya (our greyhound) doesn't really count. She is absolutely no fuss, she is relaxed, easy going and lazy. Having said that, she is no fuss in a home which has 2 other dogs for company, a stay at home mum and toddler (so never left alone for long hours) and walking is just a fun part of our daily routine. Kiya doesn't demand exercise (especially now at nearly 11) but she certainly enjoys getting out and when she was younger she was always happy to go for a 2+ hour bush walk with me. In the right home they can be a great low fuss or small yard option. Unfortunately I have seen them suggested to quite a few people who want a garden ornament, or a dog to greet them when they come home from work for half an hour before they head out again. Just because they might cause less trouble than some other breeds in this situation doesn't mean it's a good life for the dog.
  5. My parent's pointer is not what I would call a fussy eater, but he is definitely not food motivated either. He eats if there are no distractions, but most other things take priority. He is an amazing dog though! Such a beautiful temperament :)
  6. Beagles. I recently moved to Canberra and the first thing I noticed is that there are beagles everywhere!
  7. I really can't understand the logic to this. If the tenant is not being honest about owning a dog, what difference would it make to put 'no pets' on the lease? They're going to hide the dog regardless. I don't think Iggylover meant that she lies about the pets anyway, just that she has never specifically asked permission to have them.
  8. I was hoping you would post JRM. Jess is so gorgeous
  9. That's great! It makes life so much easier when they learn to do that :) One of ours will leave it as long as we are there (or in the next room), but will eat anything within reach the second we go further than that. Our other 2 amaze me! We could leave food on the table (we have even tested it by leaving a nearly finished packet of chips on the floor), go out shopping for a few hours, come home and they wont have touched a thing.
  10. Too sensitive I think. People often call my 7 year old greyhound old. It just makes me laugh, she has the most beautiful grey face, and she does look old! I have commented on other people's dogs looking old, as I have a real soft spot for older dogs and I think they're gorgeous.
  11. It sounds great! We will definitely bring her along. There some great photos on page 9, I would love to see an action shot of Kiya like that :D
  12. Greyhounds are Greyhounds to the day they die, the instinct is always there and just because they chase a lure does not mean they suddenly want to chase SWF etc. Really, GAP greys are not re-trained to not chase. They are educated to live in houses etc. And people are taught how to manage their dogs drive. My ex race dog would chase anything that moved if he could including paper blowing down the street and then come home and happily curl up on the couch with the cat. Thanks for that information Rebanne :) I'm not sure I will even be able to get her to bother with chasing the lure, just wanted to make sure I wouldn't upset other people by bringing a greyhound when the thread title says non-greyhounds.
  13. I know the title says it's for non-greyhounds... does just mean racing greyhounds? Or are older greying grehounds included in that too? I think Kiya would love it but I wouldn't want to get in the way.. We could make most Saturdays but couldn't get there on a Sunday.
  14. Another vote for Greyhound. My girl seems fairly typical for the breed and she is fantastic off lead (I usually have her on lead but that's just because I prefer it), she will happily hike with me for hours one week and then spend the next on the lounge. She gets on with everyone and is extremely adaptable :)
  15. I didn't bother adding this sort of thing to my post because I thought it was just a fairly light hearted thread. I also thought that "there are no bad dogs, just bads owners" was pretty much understood and agreed on by most people so there wasn't much point repeating it.
  16. Favourite breeds would be bull breeds. I think Pitbulls are the most stunning dog. I love Amstaffs and Bull Terriers, chunky Staffords are adorable. I also love a lot of gun dogs - Vizslas, Pointers, Weimeraners etc. I love Mastiffs! I can't pick a favourite between Dogues and Cane Corsos... or Bullmastiffs! Least favourite breeds would probably be Aussie shepherds and Tollers. But I have met some really lovely dogs of each of those breeds so I don't know that I would say I dislike them.
  17. The first thing I thought was that there looks to be a bit of greyhound in there (especially in the third photo). He is adorable!
  18. I really tried to narrow it down to less photos, but I just couldn't choose, so my apologies for posting a few Kiya Titan Willow
  19. We were at AWL, just having a look around after we dropped off some dog treats. I met my beautiful puppy and said to my husband 'so... what are we going to name him?' My husband is a sweetheart, and he's not very good at saying no to me
  20. When we had to have our cat PTS my vet was amazing. I was barely holding it together as long as I didn't have to say very much and he was incredibly understanding and patient. After she had passed the vet stayed with me for a minute to make sure I was coping and then left the room so I could have a few minutes to myself with her. He came back in and bundled her up in a blanket but still cradled her and held her respectfully as he took her away, which I really appreciated. About a week or so later we receieved a card in the mail with his condolences, which also meant a lot.
  21. pixie they are absolutely stunning! Great photo.
  22. eta: sorry, the photos are bigger than I intended
