  1. Sounds like my pup!! Biting so much so that you don't want him anywhere near you. The only thing that works consistently for me is to gently grab him by the scruff of the neck roll him on his back and growl in his face. I saw his mum doing this to him when I visited the breeder so I figured i'd give it a go. It was SO HARD to make myself sound convincing. This is the 'big gun' tactic that I only use when he is being a complete monster. He stops whatever he is doing and usually curls up on my lap to chill out after being told off
  2. I'm having issues with my stubborn little puppy. I'm trying to get him to pee outside and he is NOT impressed. He much prefers to pee inside, and will hold on for as long as it takes. I'm wondering if the dog attractant sprays work?? http://www.petsupersavers.com.au/?page=139&item=613 http://www.petsupersavers.com.au/?page=139&item=1930 I'm thinking perhaps these might provide a bit more motivation for him to pee outside. Anyone had any success with these?

    Parvo ?

Me? My pup is a tenterfield terrier - the white and tan ones look HEAPS like jackies when they are little I've heard JRT's can be little terrors. I'm guessing yours was no exception? My dog is a little pain in the butt at times too though. I can't imagine having a pup that is more hypo that my current one - I think i'd need some valium to cope!

My pup had this exact reaction to eating an egg. Runny poo and the associated sounds that accompany it... SHUDDER...but otherwise he was acting completely normal. I put him on boiled chicken and brown rice and he was back to normal less than 24hrs later. Don't want to feed it for too long though, the ricey poos are a pain to clean up... (but infinitely better than that runny poo smell ) My dog loved the rice and chicken. In fact - he gorged himself on it so much that he vomited
  5. Oh good!!! I must admit I was a bit sad to read that he couldn't sit on my lap - as that's his favourite place to hang out in the whole world.
  6. Ohhh let us know how it goes! I'll be taking my pup to Australian Dog training in Oakleigh once he is old enough and i'd love to hear how you go with it!
  7. :D DRY CRATE!! :D We put him in his crate in our bedroom to sleep at 9:30pm and took him to wee at 11pm when we were about to go to bed. He cried a bit but then slept. We got woken up twice so he could go toilet - once at 3am and once at 5am. Pretty good going! We started taking him outside on a leash last night and he seems to be doing fine with it. I think peeing outside is more natural for him as he has more space to sniff around and find a spot. Unfortunately we don't have any grass, but he seems fine with going on the paving or a garden bed. I wrote up his daily routine and it's up on the fridge so my OH and I can remember what to do and when, so hopefully in a few days Charlie will be used to it. Whoever suggested feeding him in his crate - great idea. I think he loves hanging out where he knows he will get a meal, and enjoys the stinkyness of bone residue on his bed! Dogs... :p Optimus: His stool is pretty good. It's very dark and firm enough that it doesn't leave a mark when you pick it up. He had dihorrea once when I gave him an egg and it was the most worst smelling thing I have ever smelt in my entire life (he's never getting an egg again!!) but feeding him boiled checken and brown rice cleared it right up. The peeing has stopped being so frequent. I think taking the water away helped. Today is his first day with access to the backyard, and his first day wearing his little break-away cat collar. How exciting!
  8. So my dad came around tonight and fixed my door, so now the dog can go outside whenever he likes, and so can I. :D We let Charlie out of the laundry and he got excited to see my OH the he peed on the beanbag, which has happened sooo many times in the past so we decided the beanbag goes away for a while. He has no toys now except the ones in his crate, and nowhere to lie but there either. I put him in his crate and he had a big sook, but every time he got calm, I clicked using my clicker and gave him a treat. Then I decided upon a smart idea - I gave him a block of frozen roo mince. He went NUTS for it and completely forgot he was in his crate for the 15 minutes it took for him to eat the mince. After that, I took him outside to pee, but no success (half an hour of standing in the rain!), so back in the crate he went. At the moment he is curled up asleep in there. He has only peed twice since we are home and it's nearly 9pm. I'm thinking that the constant peeing must have been him marking his territory, or weeing over spots he had weed on previously. Water got taken away at 6pm. Rhi: haven't cried yet, but have had some close calls. Luckily my OH has taken over when i'm about to snap. Hats off too you doing it all on your own. A single puppy parent would be damn hard work. Amy: we have a tiny kong here but Charlie isn't that interested. He gives up on it pretty quickly. He much prefers ripping apart loo rolls :D It's sad, but when we are at work, he just sleeps all day. Hardly plays at all. Has a drink, a wee, a whinge then back in the crate to sleep - then repeat. I'm hoping him the dog door will help as he can access the backyard which might entertain him better. Tessa: We have an open plan unit, which is very small. The kitchen, lounge, hall and entry are all connected with no doors. The only rooms with doors are the bedrooms, bathroom and laundry. None of these rooms are much fun for us to hang out with him in as they are either too cold or carpeted. During the day he has the laundry with a baby gate so he can see into the rest of the house, but not get at it. When we are home and playing with him - it's in the lounge and hence it's been really easy for him to sneak off because one of us is usually in the kitchen cooking, and Charlie likes going where the action is, and will travel between areas and can sneak off easily and he is very small and quiet. EDIT: It's now 10:30pm and he's been asleep in his crate in the bedroom for half an hour. he whined a few times but stopped when we ignored him. going well so far!!
  9. HMMM perhaps the weetbix have salt? I guess i'll have to devise a different breakfast for him. Haha slightly off topic I tried to give Charlie a pig's ear (which is incidentally far bigger than his whole head) and he HATES it! He growls and barks and does 'crazy dog' zoomies whenever he touches it! Very entertaining.
  10. The weetbix was what the breeder was feeding him. He doesn't eat much of it, maybe half. He's not huge on that or the kibble (which is available to him all day - and he grazes on it) but LOVES meat and wolfs it down. The liver treats are these ones: http://cincottachemist.com.au/product_detail.php?crk=885665 He doesn't get much - just tiny crumbs of it for training. This is the look you get before he tries to bite your nose. This is the crate. It's not shown here - but it's been partitioned so he only has access to the front half. More pics of charlie are here: http://www.dogster.com/dogs/566564
  11. Sometimes they are small puddles and sometimes they are large. Somtimes yellow and sometimes clear. But he has free access to water and has a sip quite a lot and the weeing seems to correlate with that. I'd be suprised if it was anything medical. He is still young (11 weeks) and is a small guy. He is full of beans and very healthy. His diet: 1 weebix with no lactose milk Innova puppy kibble Raw mince meat (Turkey or Beef or Roo) mixed with grated carrot and capsicum Chicken neck or a lamb bone Occasional: teaspoon of yoghurt piece of carrot or capsicum bioled chicken and brown rice (only given once when he had a tummy upset) Treats: Beef/Pork liver treats or Roo Jerky
  12. Thanks everyone for your help. It's very frustrating knowing what to do. One source of information will tell you one thing and another will tell you something completely different. Everyone has thier opinion on what does and doesn't work. Something that works well for someone's dog is completely ineffective for another, but it's hard to differentiate between what will and won't work without trying everything. But if you do that, you confuse the dog. Basically, you can't win! For instance, my puppy book told me to handle the dog a lot and give him lots of pats and cuddles, and spend all the time you can with them. Well of course that's what I did, and now the puppy isn't happy unless it's being paid copius amounts of attention. I feel like throwing the damn puppy book in the bin!!!! I've only had Charlie for a short amount of time, so I'm sure we'll be able to reverse any bad habits pretty quickly. Just need to set a routine in stone. It's hard to accept that a tiny little innocent looking thing is 'testing' us to see what he can get away with. Since he will be in the crate a lot, how do I provide water for him, without him getting the bedding soaked? Or do I have to let him out to have access to his water bowl? Rhi: I've just gone and read some of your posts and I feel sorry for you too! Terriers are hard headed little beasts! I keep telling my puppy that he's damn lucky that's he's cute otherwise there is no way I'd put up with his behaviour!
  13. persephone: In think you are right re: him having us wrapped around his paw. The dog wet his crate AGAIN last night at 3am after making a huge fuss when I woke up and turned on the central heating. Luckily, my OH dealt with it. He asked me if the dog can come into the bed and I told him it will only make the dog act up doubly as much the next time, so puppy stayed in his crate. I'm almost certain now that the puppy is getting himself so worked up that he pees himself. SURELY he could have held on longer that 1.5 hours, so it must be that. It makes sense, because when he meets a new person and gets excited, he wees himself too. I think he loses the plot when he feels he is not the center of attention. I put him in his crate this morning while I was getting ready in the bathroom and he whined up until when I was near the crate, and then he was ok. I think some serious tough love is in order. If he wees the crate tonight, then tough luck, he will be sleeping there until I clean it up in the morning. And from now on, the crate is going to have to be the only soft place he can hang out. I'm taking away the beanbag he usually hangs out on in the living room, he can have it back when he is older. He haas his 12 week vaccinations at the vet on Monday, so i'll ask the vet about his constant weeing then One question: Why isn't he allowed to fall asleep on my lap? Is it so he associates sleep with his crate, or something else? Optimus: Is the vinegar + biozet ok for wooden floors? Does it take away the urine scent so the dog doesn't go back to the same spot?
  14. Currently writing this at 1:15am to the sound of dog screaming and destruction of flooring coming from the laundry. He's screamed for 45 minutes straight. Tonight I stopped water and food at 9 and took the dog to sleep in his crate at 10. Only one source of heat this time, and with freshly laundered blankets that were pee-free. Put up with the whining and scratching for 10 minutes and he eventually worse himself out and went to sleep. At 12:30 am he woke up and started to whine for dear life. He had wet the crate. I took him to wee and watched him do circles for 15 minutes with no luck, and left him to scream himself senseless so I could hand wash his pet bed cover and wipe down his mattress, Now i'm off to dry the mattress and with the hairdryer and put the dog... i mean TAKE the dog to sleep. The OH has managed to sleep through the entire thing!!
  15. From day one on the pee pads in the laundry at the closest point to where the dog door will be once it's working (the dog door is installed in the wooden door but the security door needs a hole to be put in it so Charlie can use the dog door) I figured that having him pee closest to where I want him to in the long term might help. Once the door is working properly, i'm going to start taking him outside to pee, and then hopefully one day he'll start taking himself outside to pee. I've taken up his water and finished feeding at 9 tonight so I'm going to see if I can get a decent pee out of him before crating so he'll sleep through until morning. It's frustrating... when i'm home I take him to pee on his pads at least once an hour but he still pees on the floors. I estimate he has peed on the floor at least 10 times today, and only about 6 times on his puppy pads. I KNOW he can hold his pee all night, he's done it before, so why does he seem to not be able to hold it at all while awake?? To prevent this, should I crate him whenever I am not actively paying attention to him?
  16. Thanks It's nice to know that my dog isn't the only frustrating puppy in the world! I can't wait until my door is fixed so Charlie can go outside to pee. He seems to really love being outside so hopefully the peeing outside will seem 'right' to him. Oh, smart idea - i'll definitely do that.
  17. The puppy has a heated pet bed, and one of those microwaveable bags of wheat, and the crate is covered with towels to insulate it. I put my fingers in to soothe him as that's what I read I should do in the puppy book I bought My puppy is 11 weeks old as is a Tenterfield Terrier and is small - weighing 2kgs. He would pee at LEAST 10+ times a day, it's not new, it's jsut what he has always done. It's annoying as I take him to pee on his puppy pads every hour or so, and then sometimes he sneaks off right after peeing and then pees elsewhere - usually on the floor in the kitchen or hallway. It's not like he drinks excessively either. It's not involuntary peeing either, as he squats down to do it. So, does your dog spend most of his time in his crate? And do you feed him in there? Mine only goes into his when we go to bed. Should I be putting him in there as soon as he falls asleep? He usually passes out on one of our laps at about 9. He actually loved his crate from the get go - and happily sleeps in it (with the door open) in the laundry all day while I'm at work. I think he would just prefer to sleep in the bed with us. Toileting is on puppy pads in the laundry at the moment while our back door gets fixed. I say 'go wees' and 75% of the time, he does it on command, and he gets a few tiny pieces of beef liver treat for it if it's on the puppy pads. Funny thing is, i've been sleeping with earplugs in for about 5 years due to a snoring OH and only stopped when I got the pup so I could hear him if he whines to go to the toilet. Between the snoring OH and the whining puppy, i'm suffering from extreme sleep deprivation at the moment.
  18. My puppy's crate training isn't going too well any more. For the first 2 weeks he was perfect, would sleep all night and would hold his pee. Some nights though, he'll wake me up 4 or more times for a pee break. Then, one night at about 2am he threw up in the crate and I was worried, so I let him sleep in the bed with us. BIG mistake. Now, he goes to his crate happily at bedtime, but will wake up at about 2am and whine and whine. I take him to pee, and instead he will walk around and do anything BUT pee. He often sits there and looks at me, or will try and crawl up the leg of my pyjama pants. When I put him back in the crate, he really starts making a performance, and will 'dig' at his bed and paw at the crate door, which is very noisy. I put my fingers through the crate (which is next to my bed) to calm him, which used to work, but it lately it doesn't help. And then last night, he wet the crate. I think he must have done it right after I put him back in the crate after an unsuccessful trip to pee. There is no way I would have slept through his whining. It's almost as though he held in the pee on purpose I washed all his wet blankets and cleaned the doggy bed... but is the crate training ruined now? Should I give up and let him sleep in the bed? He doesn't wet our bed, but I feel he is struggling for dominance over me and my OH and I don't appreciate being 'played' by my puppy.
  19. Perhaps... The (human grade) meat you buy in the shops is farmed under strict guidelines and the meat is inspected before sale. If you were killing and butchering your meat yourself, i'd say it's more likely that the meat could be harbouring parasites. However, responsile owners of dogs are worm reguarly, so perhaps it's not such an issue for dogs to eat that meat than it is for humans.
  20. I know in humans, there is a chance of getting trichinosis from eating raw pork. From what I've read, trichinosis is a nasty infection that you definitely don't want to contract, so I personally wouldn't feed myself or my dog raw pork. I have no idea how relevant this is to Australia and if it affects dogs too EDIT: yep, seems dogs can get it too However, this site says it's not in australia but this one says it is...
  21. Because the dog door isn't in yet, i'm using puppy training pads right near the back door in my laundry, over a plastic mat. My puppy did 6 out of 7 wees on his pads today. And 1 out of 2 poos, and it's only his second day here He is loving the idea of trading wee for delicious morsels of dried beef liver and lashings of "GOOD BOY!!!". I keep the liver on a shelf right above the pads, and I think that's helping him associate wees with treats. I find the best way is to close all the doors and I sit there and don't make a sound until he gets on his pad, where I say "do a wee". He usually tries to jump on my lap but I ignore him and give him no attention until he performs. So far, so good!! Last night I woke him up and got him out of his crate 3 times to do wees, at 12, 2 and 4:30. He only weed at 4:30, so i'm going to just set my alarm for that time tomorrow morning.
  22. I have bought him a heated pet bed in case he gets chilly The breeder had one and we figured if he's used to that level of luxury, we don't want to deprive him! I'm worried about him escaping too. Admittedly, I spent all last weekend patching up every singe hole in my backyard. But you just never know. Tenties are smart little critters so I'm not 100% confident that the backyard is escape proof.
  23. Hey... really good idea! I hadn't even thought of doing that! It's totally doable too
  24. I'm pretty sure that Bunnings sells it by the metre. I remember them advertising it as a drought proof alternative to lawn for backyards! I'm going to try making this on Friday. I love making stuff.
  25. Hi TigerJack, could you post the link? I tried a search but there are so many euphemisms for toilet that I couldn't find your post! I am thinking of making my own doogie toilet now! I sketched out a plan and everything. It involves an underbed storage container: and then drilling a heap of holes in the top for drainage, and then covering the top with synthetic grass. I've got a container similar to the one in the picture at home, except mine is nicer and has wheels. The lid seems sturdy enough to take a small dog's weight and also has corrugations so hopefully the pee would settle in them and then drain down the drilled holes into the container. The bottom of the container would collect the pee, and could be lined with training pads.
