Heartworm Prevalence In Different States
deltron replied to Miss Helena's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I know a few breeders who dont heartworm thier dogs (in Victoria), and none of thier dogs have had heartworm. However, i heartworm my own dog. I'd feel extra guilty if he got heartworm and I knew I could have prevented it. -
I've been told that it can be quite difficult training multiple dogs at once, because if you are teaching one to sit, at the same time you are inadvertently teaching 2 others to ignore the command 'sit'. I have no idea how true this is though.

That is a scarily accurate description When you see that expression, you can also know some part of your body will be experiencing pain in the near future

Mine was about $110 for C5, Vet check and microchip. The vet said to not walk the dog for a week afterwards, and to not have any contact with stranger's dogs until after the next set of injections at 16 weeks. I'm finding it kind of hard to avoid other dogs when walking Charlie as dogs want to meet him and vice versa, and it's good from a socialisation aspect for him to meet friendly dogs, especially big ones. I'm trying to avoid the main dog walking times, and when we run into a dog I let him meet them for a short time because he loves it so much.

I think I jinxed myself by making this thread. The dog has found that he can hide under our bed and we can't get him. I was looking under there and he started going nuts and barking at me!!

Oakleigh South. It's been suggested to me to check out some local community obedience clubs so I think I might check out 'Moorabbin & District obedience dog training club' and perhaps 'Eastern Suburbs Obedience Dog Club' too (as they are in the vague vicinity of where I live) before I commit to anything.

I've not seen the tired eyes yet

Thought i'd start a new topic on ADT, as the other ones are from a few years ago. I'm going to an intro session this Sunday arvo and i'm wondering what i'm going to be in for, the person on the phone wasn't very forthcoming with the info ;) . My Tenterfield Terrier pup is 13 weeks and we initially wanted to just take him to puppy school but it seems you have to take a package, so we thought we might go for Gold level obedience. We are very interested in the socialisation aspect. He loves dogs his own size and friendly adult humans. We've not tested him around bigger dogs (we don't know anyone with a big dog who is calm enough), and he is a bit unsure about kids (don't know anyone with suitable young kids). I read that ADT sometimes include different sorts of animals and situations into the training for socialisation purposes. Is socialisation with children also included? I'd really like my dog to have the opportunity to be able to socialise with some kids in a safe environment, as he is very tiny and hence is a kid magnet when we go on walks.

All The Fun Begins This Sunday!

Charlie, myself and my OT will be attending an introductory session at ADT this Sunday arvo. Hi to anyone who goes to Oakliegh Sth already, we might be joining you shortly! I'm hoping Charlie will get a lot out of it. He is 13 weeks and knows 'sit', 'drop', 'get back', 'shake hands', 'beg' & 'fetch'. All that goes out the window if he sees anything moving or if he thinks the floor is too cold to drop ;) We are thinking of taking him to 'gold' level. -
Everyone's pics are so nice I've done one of those out of box dealies of Charlie - his head is poking through a giant collar and I added a circle behind it and his name for my signature

Just wanted to get people's opinions on puppy barking. Is there a time that they start, or is it just random? My pup has only barked twice in the month i've had him. Once at his reflection in the mirror and once at his pig's ear. Hehe. Am I safe to assume he won't be a barker? Or is it something they start later or pick up the idea from other dogs? At the moment my pup whinges and grunts for attention. I'm not worried about it or anything, just curious.

I feed innova puppy. As well as that, I feed roo mince mixed up with grated carrot, capsicum and spinach - with some more innova kibble (wet) mixed in as my pup tends to pick out some of the dry stuff and hide it for later. He also gets a chicken neck daily and once a week he gets a meaty lamb bone. Found out last night that he LOVES sugar snap peas, when one of mine fell on the ground. He thought it was a great toy and played with it and then ate it. So I might start using them as a treat

The first time I went to clip my pup's claws - I was so confused because I couldn't find his dewclaws. I looked up the documentation the breeder gave me and sure enough, they had been removed. Is this standard practice for Tenterfield Terrier pups?

I think I might need it before you, because when I first read this post, I thought that if I had a big dog, i'd put the tooth on a necklace and wear it. Too bad dogs swallow their teeth. OK really off topic, but when i was a little kid, I opened the ashtray in my friend's mum's gemini as I was getting a lift home. The ashtray was full of teeth!!! She kept the baby teeth of her kids in there. I freaked out and she got angry at me for finding her hiding place.

I read somewhere that some dogs get very licky because it 'pays off' for them. If their owner likes it, the pup gets positive attention. The owner is rewarding the behaviour. The dog then licks more and more because they know it will mean good times for them.

Awww how nice! I never knew that pups lost teeth until I patted my boss's golden retriever pup and and bloody tooth dropped out of it's mouth. I thought i'd broken the dog! So, what did the tooth fairy leave under Jak's pillow?

Awwww you poor thing!

Thanks everyone Charlie and I got soaked to the bone last night at 2am when he whined to go pee. It was POURING outside. I had to lean over so my back would shield him from the rain. Only when I woke up this morning did I realise I could have used an umbrella Ahh the joys of dog ownership. We've stopped crating him at night, and he's sleeping in the bed with us. I actually enjoy my little hot water bottle. He likes to sleep in the crook of my back or on my feet which is fine with me as I get cold there. This way he only whines when he genuinely needs to pee, and not for attention seeking. Seems to be working. He spends all day in his (open) crate while i'm at work so it must be nice for him to hang out with his 'pack' at nighttime. He's not had an accident for 2 days now, and he's also stopped being so bitey, thank goodness. He knows now that I will cease rubbing his belly if he tries to bite me. :p

Hi deltron - I just picked this up.....I don't want to be pedantic BUT....dogs have an association time frame of a half to three seconds so if you are walking around the yard saying 'go wees' then puppy has not learned what 'go wees' actually means! I would suggest that your puppy thinks that 'go wees' means 'walk around the yard for a bit'....I think you should only use your command when your puppy starts to squat, then follow with lots of praise/treat/both. It does take them a while to specifically relate the command to the action but if you are consistent, puppy will get there. I still give a 'quick, quick' command when Zig actually toilets, just to reinforce and practice the command. Then when we are out and I specifically want him to toilet then all the practice pays off. Summer pups are soooooo much easier!!! Keep persisting!!! Oh - that's a good point. Maybe I should use another word too. I feel like a right dill saying 'go wees' anyway!

I walked him for 20 minutes on leash around the backyard saying 'go wees' (what I have been saying from day one) exitedly before I sat and tied him. The puppy pads and tying him were a last resort was because I was so cold I couldn't move around anymore. It's damn hard to get my dog's attention, he really does run after every leaf - he's a terrier - it's in his blood to go running after anything that moves. I wouldn't call walking around in the freezing cold wind for 20 minutes while my dinner inside goes cold 'easy'. I am actually motivated - hence me taking him out there every 2/3 hours. If I wan't motivated then I would not have bothered. As I said previously I was having WHINGE and a VENT...sheesh. Yep. He can be so frustrating. The other day we were outside for 20 minutes with no success and I had to come inside as I was late for work and he slipped past me and ran under the bed and weed under there. He gets lots of 'good boys' and liver treats when he performs AAAAAAAAAAAANYWAY - all was good this morning. He weed outside and then we came inside and he circled so we went back out for more toileting. I'm thinking the advice people have given me 'wait outside as long as it takes' just doesn't cut it with my dog. 'As long as it takes' can be HOURS. So instead if he doesn't go he goes back inside in his crate and then we try again later. That seems to work much more successfully.
-
He's too distracted. He runs after every leaf on the ground, chews on sticks and nibbles and pulls at weeds, eats dirt, digs...etc. I tied him up as it was getting too cold to stand up and hold the lead. We don't have grass in our backyard. He was originally trained on puppy pads so I put a soiled one within his reach so he would have something to wee or poo upon that has his scent on it. We are training for that too. However they are much harder to predict. Basically, if anything comes out - we are happy.

Have just come in from sitting outside for 45 minutes waiting for my little monster to pee. My OH is now out there continuing the vigil. It feels about 4.C outside and is windy. Pup is wearing a jacket and is tied up over the top of a puppy pad in the backyard and we have been sitting there waiting for him to pee. I KNOW he needs to. He just ate dinner, had a drink AND hasn't peed for nearly 3 hours. I could take him back to his crate but he pees in there too The dog is just lying down on the ground and whining. I KNOW if we give up, the second he comes inside he'll wee. UGGGGGGGGHHHHH. If only there was an easier way He was so good at the vets today too. Hardly made a peep when the vet gave him his microchip and didn't even notice his injection. Anyway - just venting. I know everyone goes through this... but man it would be SO MUCH EASIER if it was summer...
