We used to use this on my old dog - we had an ancient bar of it. It worked well on my dog, and he was prone to eczema. I like the packaging and name of the soap

I started the TOT today with my 5 month old Tentie... it'll be interesting to see how it goes!

Well actually, no. He won't eat many other commercial dog foods. I feed him a majority of raw food + bones and he gets kibble as well as a supplement. I am happy with my choice.

My dog has been given run of the house for the past week and all he does all day is sit in the front window of the living room, watching the world pass by. He hasn't touched anything. He doesn't even jump up on the couch. I leave him kongs but he doesn't play with them - he just sits and waits for us to come home However once we are home - he is full of beans and into everything. Before I leave for work, I put everything of value in a cupboard or out of reach, covered the couches with blankets, unplug all electricals within his reach etc. Our house looks extrememely spartan at the moment! Perhaps give Kapo the laundry for a while with only 'approved' chewing items so she gets used to only chewing those things? Then slowly let her have access to the house, 1 room at a time. Is Kapo scared of anything or dislike anything? My dog hates a coke can filled with coins. I strategically place one of those on my laptop at home in case Charlie gets any ideas about touching it. As soon as he hears the coins - he immediately stops whatever he is doing. Also (this is a bit high tech).. you could leave a webcam running, and when Kapo does something naughty, get your computer to make a loud sound to stop her. A webcam + skype will do the trick.

I got a free sample bag of Advance puppy growth a while back and have been using it since we ran out of Innova puppy. My dog LOVES IT. He eats all the dry food in his bowl straight away. When he was getting Innova, he'd sniff it and then walk off, and maybe snack on one or two bits if he was deperate. I think I will contune feeding him it just because he likes it so much.

This might help you: It also depends on the breed - some are naturally more lean than others. With Charlie, at 4 months, some days you could occasionally see his ribs if you looked at him a ceratain way. He was growing so fast that his fat wasn't catching up.

Whoa! Desexing is so cheap at Box Hill and Lort Smith! My usual vet is Monash Vet... but I think I might 'cheat' on them if other vets are charging so much less...

My dog eats roo mince all the time. I make him a barf type mix primarily made up of roo mince, tuna and turkey mince as well as veggies, cheese and some olive oil. He also gets chicken necks and some still have skin attached so I figure he gets a bit of fat that way too. My dog is lean but not skinny and his coat is shiny and his eyes are bright so I think the roo mince must be ok for him.

Yep - totally normal. My pup got them twice a day and now he gets them only a couple of times a week. It's his own faults for jumping around after eating The second day I had him, he had hiccups and he came up to me and looked up at me had a little whinge as if to say "can you please stop them?"

I do use clicker training. There are many different techniques I utilise. I don't believe I said that this technique is the only one I use. The can is working well for me, as Tony said, to break a cycle. Essentially, it takes the dog out of prey drive, which he spends the vast proportion of his time in. It's good for when the dog is biting the living crap out of my feet, or barking at the neighbours. It stops him doing something that is really offensive very quickly. t's a last resort option and i've used it maybe 8 times and have eradicated some behaviours that clicker training would have taken weeks to do. Maybe it's not the 'best' way but it works and perhaps you should accept that other people are allowed to have different opinions to you.

You could try taping them. I did that with my dog for a while. http://www.leerburg.com/tapingears.htm I just used making tape and that's it. If you force the ear into position and tape around where it folds, the ear will stand up. Well, at least it does on my tiny dog - i'm not sure about big dogs. Also giving the dog stuff to chew, apparently that helps thier muscles develop which in turn holds the ears up

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you are trying to say... Primarily, the noise interupts what the dog is doing, and then right after you say 'uh uh' aso the dog knows that it was doing something bad, and then as soon the dog is good/calm, you praise it. Same principle as using a water bottle to spray the dog.

As some of you might recall, I have a very stubborn 'bite happy' little dog. He loves to bite feet, pull the hems of pants, bite hands, faces etc. We have been trying many methods to stop the biting including 'uh uh', 'puppy yelp', lead corrections, spraying with water, scruffing him etc. None work well for us. I was reading a book called "Good Dogs, Bad Habits" which suggested getting this little contraption: Take one empty coke can* add roughly 10 5c pieces to the can. Tape up the top. You now have assembled the evil coke can of DOOM! Whenever you dog is in the middle or starting to do a REALLY naughty behaviour, shake the coke can once. It makes a godawful noise, and it makes my dog nearly pee his pants (metaphorical pants). Every time I do it, my dog stops what he is doing and looks like he has been anally probed and he comes over to me and acts like the nicest dog in the world. I am using it sparingly and only for when he is being truly naughty so he doesn't become desensitised. I also try and use it when he doesn't know I have it because if he sees the coke can, he is careful to be on his best behaviour, and won't exhibit his naughty habits in it's presence. Hope this is of some help to you all! * diet coke for the health concious

Shampoo / Condition / Flea Rinse
deltron replied to charlie mouse's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
sorry to hijack this thread, but poodlefan, what good quality conditioner would you recommend? My dog is losing his puppy coat and although he is very short haired - the new hair is much more rough and I think a bit of conditioner might help the hair look a bit smoother. Currently I wash him with rudduck's puppy and massage a bit of jojoba oil into his coat afterwards. -
AFAIK, it's over 9 months.

Treating the dog and keeping treats with me for kids to give him is a good idea - i'll start doing that. I'm going to set up a meeting with some kdis and charlie. I think i'll let him come up to the kids when he is ready, rather than them approaching him, and take it from there. The kids are quite good with dogs as my brother in law has a little jack russell and they have patted and played with in the past.

Hi Lowchenlove, he is 4 months old - it's the dog in my signature.

My dog will reguarly leave some of his food if he's not hungry... so if he doesn't finish his breakfast then he gets to eat the leftovers of breakfast for dinner. Seems to work well... he gets enough incidental food from training and if he is still hungry he gets into the treats he has squirrelled away in his little hideyholes around the house.

I thought I had socialised my pup really well (the dog in my signature) but on taking him for a walk today I realised perhaps not. We were walking down the street and on the opposite side of the road was a little girl (9yo i guess?) who saw my pup and said "oh a puppy" can called for her siblings/friends to come and look. Thier dad was there and he asked if it was ok if the kids could meet my pup (the other 2 were about 7 and 8). The kids were very polite and my pup and I walked over the road to where they were. The kids came over and my dog started growling at them. The kids backed off some, and then one got his hands and knees and slowly offered his hand toward my dog, and again my dog growled. I tried to reassure my dog but he would have none of it, he was hiding behind me with his taile between his legs. I apologised to the kids and told them my pup was scared and it was best if they didn't pat him in case he bites and I told them that we can come back another time when he is better socialised with kids. They were very nice, polite children and I felt sad to dissapoint them. I realise now that 3 kids coming toward him must have been quite threatening but I guess I wasn't expecting it as if it were 3 adults or 3 dogs it wouldn't have been a problem. When we first went for walks he shyed away from kids who wanted to pat him while on walks. However since then, he had been in contact with kids at puppy school and he was very friendly towards them. It's imperative for him to be friendly towards children as he is a very cute little dog that seems to draw kids in like a magnet. Can anyone suggest some techniques for introducing him to kids while on walks that won't intimidate him? I don't have any interaction with kids, so my dog never sees them apart from when he is out of the comfort of home. The only suitable kids I know for him to meet are the niece and nephew of my OH. Any tips on how to socialise him with them safely?

Updating to say that toilet training is going along very nicely at the moment. The last couple of days, charlie has taken himself outside through the dog door numerous times to toilet. We are still having a few accidents, but the majority of the time he is going outside himself or I am taking him outside. I think there are many factors helping this: warmer weather - he wants to be outside he is older and has more bladder control he knows that I will take him outside at certain times and will hold on until then he can go on walks and can wee on trees I can read his body language much better now consistently giving him treats & praise for peeing outdoors I've also found that if I take him outside and he is running around, I point at the ground where he last went to pee, and he sniffs it and then will go pee shortly after. I think it communicates the idea of what I want him to do. I still say 'go wees' every time, but I don't think that he knows what i'm saying.

Hi there! I was meeting some people at earthdog so I had the pleasure of watching lure coursing for a bit. My pup is too young to lure course unfortunately. The dogs seemed to be having a blast. One dog kept doing little leaps while it was running - I think it was jumping with happiness If you saw a tiny little dog wearing a red jacket staring forlornly at the dogs running aound, then that was us.

MY PUP FOUND HIS VOICE!! He has known how to bark for ages, but today was the day before hard rubbish collection and all the neighbours were out in force, and my dog barked his head off at them!! I took him outside to meet the neighbours, and he was barking at them while we were standing right near them. how embarrassing. he eventually shut up and got pats from them, but geez. And then I caught him doing it again so I sprayed him with water. Then he started barking AT ME! He worked out that if he barked at me, he'd get sprayed with water, and he was turning it into a game! how annoying yet cute.

What is 'submitting the puppy'? I've never heard of it before, perhaps it might work on my pup? Can you please explain what it is? Thanks

Your vet will advise when it's safe for your dog to go for walks. Ours advised walking (only on foothpaths) a week after the second vaccination and then we could walk wherever a week after the final vaccination. In the meantime, take your pup for 'walks' around the backyard to get it used to being on a lead. The first outdoor walks i took my dog on were up and down our street and around the backstreets, nice quiet short walks (5-10min) during the day. It got him used to the sights and smells of our neighbourhood. And then later we worked him up into walking in busier, noisier areas. I'm not sure how long the walks should be as I have a tiny dog, who can walk forever without getting tired.

Oh awesome! I'll be at KCC that morning to watch earthdog, I'll have to swing by and see the lure coursing too
