  1. Thanks Ness. Visited that site and will look into it further.
  2. My 3 yr old kelpie about 5 months ago injured her back leg. She had been done to the lake with the bike but on the way home seemed to be trotting funny. The next morning she was lame so off to vets. My vet was very sure she had strained the medial ligament in her knee and so she got a cartrophen (? spelling) injection and rest. Althou we aren't really good at the rest part. She had return visits to the vets at 2 weeks intervals then 1 month, then 2. She hasn't limped at all since day one. We were away over christmas and she was doing walks and runs on the beach by then. In March I started a bit of grid work but after a week I had her checked and even I could see at the vets she was stiffer stretching the injured leg compared to the good leg. Different vet in clinic looked at her with same diagnosis btw. By April she is now back to everything, herding, zoomies ,runs for 30 mins daily on bike plus hr walks off lead but I am now a bit nervous about starting agility jumping however slowly again. Because she loves it she goes a bit wild. I took her for a second opinion btw but this vet diagnosed holes in her muscles. Turned out he was looking at the wrong leg. I should have realised but was busy watching her as she is a drama queen at vets. Shouldn't he have checked both legs as I didn't tell him what leg was injured. That was a bit of a waste althou he was recommended to me. I was told by someone I trust that I should be doing more about my dogs injury. It was suggested I visit this specialist in Parramatta but needed a referral. My vet didn't consider it warranted a opinion from a specialist and he does often send images etc to this specialist. So my vet is confident of what is going on. I went in last week for another check and the vet says there is little sideways movement in the knee which is great. So waiting for our 2 monthly interval visit for the cartrophen again. Sorry for this long story but besides horses in my past ( where lengthy periods of rest normal) I haven't had a injured dog. I don't mind waiting to start doing agility again but the dog loves it and she is needing that outlet. Considering a visit to Gary Barnsley at Western Sydney for a massage and his opinion. Can I hear anybody else's experiences with such a injury? Any advice? Am I missing something I should have done. THank You
  3. I am too far but i would join u. gets a bit boring if u walk a lot like i do. Particularly now as it gets dark so early. Safety in numbers.... A guy at our local dog club tried to get a group walk going. Maybe try that. Good luck
  4. Hi there is a lady at our agility club who minds a few dogs in her home. I dont have her details but can find out From the club. Luckily i dont leave my dogs much but i considered her. My brother gets roped in to dogsit mine with some bribery. Even if he totally spoils them and the kelpie controls him! At wollongong. If interested i can get her details?
  5. I fed rc after my puppy school vet nurse suggested it. Dogs loved it and even my littlies would have it as a treat. Not usual for them to munch dry. So i swapped. Tried bh recently as reccommended and cheaper, oz made too. Dogs not as keen and one little dog got a really funny coat happening. So went back to rc. Feed a lot of raw too and treats raw. Vets all natural cause we win it and they love it. Interesting post. Thanks
  6. I was there too! Small world. Don't forget ADAA which has not for competition runs great for just starting and training. The height cut off are different and could suit your dog. My dog at 39.5 cm fitted in the Adaa class of mini as under 40cm. In ankc I was in with a lot more small bc's as the height cut off different. Not that I cared as I was running with more of my friends who had small bc'so so good for me. You can also choose to run as a regular dog and always run at one height lower. Great for older dogs who still want a go or some physically challenged dogs. It's all for a game u can play with your dog. Teaching your older dog is also a learning experience anyway. Newcastle has a good agility club too hasn't it. Have fun.
  7. My dogs breeder has working dogs but when jade has earned a few titles I will probably contact him to let him know how she is going. But I definitely send updates to my rescue dogs saviour. Rescue people have a hard time so I thought really important to let them know the happy stories. I am sure most breeders would like to know their dog is happy. But from a breeders perspective is it good to know the dog is also performing well if the dog was also bred for a purpose. Such as working dogs like mine doing herding or dog sports?
  8. I went to the show once to see a breed that is fairly rare. I found it hard to find a competitor available to tell me if the breed was present that day. Some competitors I approached in the small dog section just stared at me and then turned away. I was a bit surprised but i did ask again and a more helpful person told me the dogs of that breed had not shown up. Bummer. I compete at Erskine park a bit and have had some lovely chats with people there while I go for a meal. So just wondering if the royal is a great place to go to talk to breeders? By all means go to enjoy the dogs on show but I think some others shows would give u a better chance to talk to breeders. Specially if u go to a breed specific show. One day before I decide on my next agility dog I must go to a poodle speciality show. I find it hard to decide what breed I would like to see more at the royal. Decisions, decisions. However Salukis are a beautiful dog and would love one. Maybe not as my next agility dog. Shame we can't have all our fave breeds.sigh!
  9. Very cute puppy and love those feet. I know nothing about the gundog aspect of training as I have agility dogs. However when I brought my first kelpie pup 3 yrs ago I had heaps of questions. My first two dogs were rescue and a bit older. Besides my training instructors I read some really good books for getting foundation and building relationships for the sporting dog. I remember Control Unleashed for Puppies was good. Forgotten the others and away atm. Maybe some others could suggest a good book. My first priority was also socialisation which was a big hurdle for my pup. Though your GSP is probably very different in temperament. Great to see you care and are so keen. Remember to enjoy puppyhood as it goes too fast. More pics too!
  10. They might need to do more research, go to some shows before looking at pups. I would not go with breed from a online choose your breed. How funny, my choices from an on line pick your breed very weird. Springers are nice dogs. Depends too on the containment etc on the 5 acres. Definitely a low maintenance good with kids dog needed. Good luck. However if they are actually looking at pups its probably a done deal.
  11. Is there a cresties thread in the breed section? If not i do know a breeder but i'd have to track down her contact details. She moved away but she would know.
  12. I was thinking of trying this as my dogs go places where there are ticks. Luckily had no issues so far. I do not like using the medications so regularly specially on my little ones. Gemma is 10 yrs now and when I gave her another flea/tick treatment last year she was so sick on it. I think she is allergic to the drug ( starts with Pyr..) as some shampoos make her react too. So this treatment cost me two vet visits and a sad doggy. After looking at the comments in the link supplied I am not so sure now. And if Gemma had a reaction would it possibly last for weeks. How terrible for the effected dogs.
  13. Just re read your post. Maybe you should ask Nekhbet about this. As you have only had your dog a short while it takes a while for a rescue dog to settle in. Taking it back to his bed could be a little bit a resource guarding thing. You mentioned other issues? maybe concentrate on settling in and getting home rules sorted. Fetch also involves some other behaviours we take as understood like giving the toy up and also not simply lunging to get it back. Not sure how experienced you are so talking about shaping nose touches etc might be a bit ahead of where you are at. But shaping itself might introduce you to a whole new world of training and give you a bond building experience while also teaching your dog how you want him to behave. I'm sure Nekhbet will be able to help you there? A cross you describe at 4 yrs must be fairly energetic? Fetch will definitely be something you can both enjoy soon. Photo?
  14. dogs not bringing toy back is a common thing which we find when training agility dogs. We want them to drive for the toy but bring it back asap fro a tug. And didn't my kelpie love to play " Game for one". I was advised a bit like superminty's method, go into a small room like the bathroom. Shape a nose touch. Give the dog the toy and as you are in a small area while the dog has toy in mouth, ask for the newly shaped nose touch. Most dogs who grip the toy will nose touch with the toy. take the toy and reward. Do this in the small area, gradually building the area up. I used food at first but if your dog is tug mad they soon learn. Good luck.
  15. Great dog! Just highlights how wonderful the breed can be. The owners..... not so bright. Why risk it. However if you read the little blip under the video that caught my eye....... the person who posted thought it perfectly safe, but found many watchers did not. So she contacted her trainer/dogs trainer or something and asked. She was told that yes , her dog was unlikely to do anything BUT no dog with resource guarding pressure is 100% for sure. The owner says she thought it was so safe but in hindsight learnt something and says thanks. But yes, there are some stupid things filmed.
  16. I hope your little one gets the all clear. Just wanted to add crate wise I brought two med crates at uncle sams for $29 or $39. big enough for your two, a direct copy in black wire just like your normal crates. I use them side by side longways on the back seat of my car. Probably not available but excellant if some cheap shop sells them. Good luck with it all.
  17. Hi everyone Looked in the obvious threads but couldn't find this spot listed in posts. Wondered if anyone has been there and how is the road into the area? Its located in the southern highlands and is very pet friendly. Brought a new cub camper and wanting to try it out. Just a little one for staying at doggy events. Thanks.
  18. I walk the young kelpie regardless unless it is pouring. Have wet weather gear and use bike out on bike tracks outside my house. even better in the wet as the kelpie can stay off lead and she loves!!!!! the bike. I expet calm if no walk happens but we do play games inside.
  19. I went to the Dog Lovers Show on sat and had to visit the chihuahua breed stand. I have a chi x foxy that is a great dog, so loyal and good to train. Did quite a bit of agility with her too. At the stand there was a cream long haired chi. It was a fantastic example of its breed. Lovin pats from adults and kids alike. It was rolling on its back to get belly pats. Unfortunately no puppies from this breeder at the moment with this breeder. I really appreciated this lovely dog. Research, you want a chihuahua like this. Chihuahua is a bit different from the other choices. Give hubby a vote but take him to a show too to shop.
  20. I have an older kelpie x chi that i adopted that has been hopeless at nail clipping and getting needles etc at vet. So when i had my kelpie pup i spent ages at the vet which she loved just dropping in etc. But after desexing she changed and hates the vet too. And she hates nail clipping even thou i try to keep it short and sweet. Such sensitive dogs,my chihuahua is easy compared to the kelpies! They dont seem to improve so now i just grab a leg, cut one nail and let go, plus a treat if one is handy. They are such drama queens can't do more than one or two at a time. If your dog is geting older as well not sure about changing behaviour, maybe just minimise the stress by single trims, food and as you said, act really calm and tell em to get over it.
  21. Megan's post is spot on. Specially adding the third type of barking. Least Nitro is keen :-) Kavik you will get there I'm sure. I am assuming you tried the whole barking, game stops etc. I can only suggest improving self control with exercises totally away from agility. Mine loves herding the bike more than anything. Tell her to drop and ride off or around her and she is quivering dribbling mess. But she can do it. I get her to drop in really outrageous conditions. All i can suggest. Have fun
  22. God, don't u love the net. I ask the Google god all sorts of stuff.
  23. As suggested i think u really need to go to a show and meet some of each. Then go to a agility trial and see those shelties ..A breeder mentioned soft quiet dogs.some are but in agility i see a lot that are great dogs for agility but more like bc's. I only know three Jap S and all three are well trained and one does onefience. One is really dog friendly and one is in love with me when i see it at training. And i think one diference is the habit of barking.guess who tends to be noisy of the two?
  24. Be interested in any dog movies. The breed is sloughies. Like saluki type. I love this breed. Maybe search using breed..... I might go look myself..
