Submissive Peeing And Increase In Anxiety
skip replied to kami's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I would also like a happy update with a pic!so glad you kept Annie. -
I can only sympathise with the OP! I have two small dogs and people often let their rude dogs run amuck. I noticed more people tended to attempt to recall their dogs when I got my third bigger dog. Worrying that people never worried about their dog cause they know my two chi x could not harm their dog. My kelpie is fear reactive which I try to manage but the kelpie knows off lead dogs can be too much for her. I never go to off leash dog parks either. So I live backing onto a very large park area and cycling tracks. For instance about 8 footy fields at least, plus the lake area. Still cannot avoid dickheads with dangerous off leash dogs. It is all on lead and well used. I will join your rant!! Today I was furious as I walked behind two girls with a staffy x. The dog was too interested in mine and while on lead was hard for the girl to control. So I lagged behind as we were walking on a 15min loop. Just being considerate as didn't want her whole walk to be a hassle. But then she got a bit ahead so let her DOG off!! It was obvious I was following. So I had to hide as the path comes back on itself. The dog was on lead later in the distance but off again on the oval. I know she was guessing her dog would recall, but if it didn't, and this dog was running over a large area, mine would react and God knows how that would go. If I could get to her safely I would explain how much her actions are irrespondsible. I was fed up. Didn't help that yesterday met guy with loose dog approaching head on, he couldn't recall his staffy so I waited. He gave up and went round a baseball pitch away from me. He hardly stopped his phone call. That dog was covering half that field in seconds so I was very nervous. I have been abused twice over the years by dog owners with un recallable dogs. I do walk lots of places but where ever I go eventually you run into trouble. You can only be aware and avoid places you know can be dodgey. So if it any consolation, I agree some dog owners are idiots, but not all thank god! Hope your dog wasn't too squished in your arms.

Where r u? I just took off all my doors and one has a med dog door in it. Just going to the tip. I can retrieve the dog door but it has no flap due to the Kelpie taking it out. I can tell you that fitting a door is not easy and can cost 50 to 100 dollars. My handyman put in my new door and didn't really charge me for the doggy door insert. Because the old door removed was so old and its my house I put dog door in myself. Used my drill and hole piece to do 4 corners but then you need a good jigsaw to cut to each of the holes. When the square piece falls out the dog door is split so that it slots into the door, a piece on each side. Then I just drilled on screws thru holes in the dog door frame and that's it. Did u have tools or any male friend who has tools? I brought cheap bunnings brand but the screen door work did wreck that jigsaw. You could take my whole door but too much hassle to refit. If u r going soon any dog door u buy is removable if u don't use sealent to weatherproof it. I simply have a hole in the screen which I put rubber round the rough jigsaw edge and that was it. Just been thru all this and am now going to put second toy dog door in wall next to door as only option I could see as I have three different size dogs. The larger needing door 25cm from floor and the chi only 10cm high. All using one door now with step for chi but I understand we all want our dogs to b comfy coming and going! Why I don't have same size I don't know!

Almond and Rocket! So cute.

I had a large BonoFido crate for a decade for two small dogs. When I got my larger dog I brought a small one for my chi x and a medium for the chi x kelpie. Brought on line for about $80 the smaller one. Love the solid frame that lops up Lu's it has three meshed open sides which was cooler if needed plus the roof can be opened to mesh as well. My chi loves hers and the other dogs as well. Can't tell u how many times a dog won't hop in their crate and when I check its because the chi has already hopped in. Plus they look cute at trials with all three lined up. My two small wire crates in car were $39 from a cheapie shop like Clint's. But fine for midgets. Crates are great. Love mine

Submissive Peeing And Increase In Anxiety

I should eating dinner after dog training now but had to finish your story. I have a Annie type Kellie and let me tell she would never accept your beagle. I'll bet both dogs will be so much happier. Thank you for being so considerate. My Kellie can be affectionate to my small dogs as they r polite but generally Kellie's and working dogs don't like in your face type dogs. Mine hates most staffys and labs yet. They r lovely dogs. Kelpies r much more into say hello then let's run and run. Worth telling you mine pees in fear and also when she is super excited to meet her friends. At four doubt she will change now. Good outcome too. Good luck with Annie. -
Love that your dashie is having a run.I had a Chihuahua running and she was so fun to trial with. Big difference there too. I also ran with a mid size dog and then a kelpie, great for learning.

I am glad you are looking at getting a good trainer. You. Really need help to modify your dogs behaviour and at 6 that's a fair while practising those undesirable behaviours. Yourdog will improve and you can learn to manage the issue. I have a Kellie who is just so scared of unleashed dogs. Had her as a pup,my third agilitydog and she did compete in. Sports and herding. She has doggy friends she adores and also many small dogs she will accept. But she will never be adog for a off leash area or safe with strange dogs approaching. I can manage this and it is disappointing she has so much fear still. So if at times you are at your wits end, don't dispare. With positive rewards and counter conditioning you can manage to create happy days for your dog. Have learnt heaps with my dog but still learning.

Dogs love being with you and getting round in a camper....bliss to most dogs. Getting one to suit yourlife style and your wishes in terms of energy levels most important. So many.....also poodles if you like no shedding and don't mind coat maintenance. Jack Russell, foxies, chihuahua, cavalier, min pins, and also I love Italian greyhounds and whippets. So I suppose its any you prefer the look and nature of. I like rescue dogs as well if you get one well socialised. Heaps to choose from and realise now the small white fluffys as well. Sounds like fun.

I can't remember if i posted before but i was trying to shape a dog at training recently and found her really slow. Well, a week on and i walked past the dog and she remembered me so i again tried the offered sit. Which she gave me even if again pretty slow.its a basengi? Btw. So wouldn't the stand gradually become more extinct and the freshly heaps rewarded sit become more popular?

Best Head Halter For Walking Dog That Pulls?
skip replied to White Shepherd mom's topic in General Dog Discussion
Great that you r seeing a professional soon because they can see you and advise how to use the halt,. I used a gentle leader as one of my dogs is reactive on leash to dogs. So on approaching another dog I used to ask my dog to sit and treat, like counter conditioning. With the halti I can prevent the dog from eyeballing another dog. With a back attaching head collar which I see so much in classes, the dog is reacting to another dog and can't think of anything else. I teach that in class if a dog is reacting to another dog, if it doesn't recall immediately to a sit further away, calmly put a finger thru the halting and remove the dog from this situation. Like horses you control the head, you control the dog. But this is done with other types of exercises as well. I'm sure your behaviorist will b a great help. Years ago I got help from one cause I adopted two rescue dogs nearly at once. Such an eye opener. Good luck! -
Not my breed but great offer if it was. That was nice of you.

I see your sisters dog is a springer. If your sister is interested in just doing some sport with her dog maybe noseworks would b worth looking at. We have a three legged staff in our class atm that is mad for this. Even if the dog might b marked down maybe still give it a go. Great bonding and learning experience anyway. Maybe club members r concerned too much for the dog otherwise I would not discourage anyone from having a go.

I put my door in and it is not really right on the bottom of the door. And up a flight of stairs. But i read to place the door so dogs could step thru. So the door fits the dogs body but not necessarily the height of the dog. And the screen door people said the dog door is.always right on the ground. Do others have doors fitted so dog steps thru. My door was ok for chi and chi x kelpie but the real kelpie has to b carefull. She bashes the screen door sometimes as she knows she can. But not the wood door. Found kelpie has bad hips so want to fix this.
-
I am stuck and will post myself cause i am getting new wooden doors and screen. But i have a small chi upto a kelpie. Three dogs but really i need two doors. The chi and the kelpie too different. However atm i cut a hole in the door with no flap as such cause dog broke it by going too fast. And cut a hole myself in my screen door which is so old it is half tin at the bottom In my new doors i think i might just cut two holes and not put in actual dog doors. Brought solid wood so i could. So just have to pay for two doors in new screen Cannot do hole in wall of house as high up at the back. Good luck.

Some of what you want is incompatible. But good on you for thinking. While training i see many people with dogs that dont really suit. I like short coated dogs. My personal preference but then u do get hair. So with three inside u just vacum more. I would b looking at shows but how about a italian greyhound. Thats my choice but something less full on and quiet definitely.good luck. Or a adult rescue, i love my first dog from Paws rescue.

Barking/jumping Up/nipping During Agility Runs
skip replied to sheena's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Interesting read on herding instinct. I don't have the experience you guys have with working dogs but I think I understand what Vicki/ Agility Dogs are talking about. Early on with my kelpie I did encourage a lot of herding behaviour. I sent her round trees, round things, asking for stops and change of direction. We didn't actually herd sheep till much later. I was cautioned by a agility trainer to b careful of too much herding. I didn't quite see a problem till one day she was aroused and ran around a obstacle. This had never happened with my other dogs. She only did it a couple of times and I must have adjusted my cues accordingly. I suppose I was used to giving enthusiastic cues to my smaller x dogs. I was told if I wasn't careful I would give a send to an obstacle and she'd be in the next ring over. And yes, she naturally works a fair distance. On a pushbike ride, a footy field over apparently is acceptable to her standard of with me. However I adjusted my style and her herding obstacles wasn't an issue. I used to worry that I'd not b good enough with handling and get that frustrated behaviour but we were fine in the short time we had to compete. But the running round something I thought was just her instinctual love of running round things. Great dogs aren't they☺ -
Funny, no replies to your query. I am in wollongong but probably nig near you. So DOLERS would need to know what area you are based in.

I think your dog is lucky to have you. You put a lot of effort in. I have a small dog that came with separation issues (plus 2 othere thou). He is 12 now but sometimes it still kicks in. Your mate who explained some about leadership did give you good advice. You don't need to turn into the fun police but if you are the friend with the key to the good stuff it can work well. Maybe some training will be fun and tire him out too. If your dog has a release word then some recalls and immediate release to go sniff r fun on your walk. My kelpie loves being told to come simply so she can b told to go play again. A anticipation junkie! Are you interested in agility at all. Exercise and thinking all at once. Regardless, your dog is a cutie. Good luck

Well said Rayhay +2 And to those who recommend taking a dog or any animal wit out going thru the proper channels. I understand where you r coming from but it possible to do this legally. Even if it means you offer money to buy. Or reclaim from pound. My brother had Bengal cats which he doted on. He actually had a full page spread in the Sydney Morning Herald because he built a whole wall of cat play equipment. Some article on mad cat lovers. Anyhow one cat when missing and this was for a few weeks. Until the cat was brought into the local vets by someone who had kept the cat because he was thin and had a skin condition. Lucky for my brother the cat had been treated by this vet for his allergies regularly. A quick microchip scan proved the cat was my brothers and the person with the cat gave him up. Although she held firm to her belief that the cat was mistreated so she saved it. Sometimes your efforts are not appreciated but never change!

Just saw this post. How is it going? Personally a private lesson with positive methods would b my advice. Too many community obedience clubs do not have the expertise to help although for some dogs and owners they r fine. In the meantime I wouldn't let Evie practice herding as the more she does it, the harder to stop. Simply herding in so instinctual and also so much more reinforcing for your dog. My kelpie still likes to herd my other kelpie but she is not allowed to. I gave her sheep and if none r available she can always run around a tree. That keeps her amused. I have a 4 yr old and I have learnt heaps about reinforcement and control with her. She is a lovely girl now but don't know how to put all the methods I used to obtain such behaviour in a post. At work now but if you r interested in what I did, let me know. Kelpies BTW can be fairly timid and they notice everything! Some f fearless and some r not. That is one thing I can not quite change in my dog. My rescue kelpie had issues and I blamed his past. I know my girl kelpie's past as had her as a pup and she developed issues in spite of all I did. Great dogs and glad she found you.

Great tips. This question just makes me recall a recent experience with a dog at our club. When the owner said the dog can't sit I had to see what was happening. The Basingi did sit twice for a visible treat but it took so long. I assumed it was the dog, taking in the breed type and thinking how slow he was to respond. Compared to most dogs, even a puppy, he took forever. Only then did the owner tell me it was a show dog taught to stack. So it did still work but the dog has a lot of thinking to do. Good luck!

Funny because I just saw a scary YouTube clip of a large dogs protective behaviour when the lady is pregnant.apparently the dog usually is the husbands best mate except each time the wife is pregnant, the dog will not let the husband near her. After each child is born back to normal. Actually no use to you but it was interesting and the behaviour would have horrified me. Two points of view here but I have a chihuahua who needs to be removed on rare occasions. I do expect good behaviour with food or me as a resource and this is usually fine. Probably counter conditioning more than anything else works OK in my house. Very subtle cues at times

You sound like a great owner Morgan brand. Your dog will b fine inside while the pen is made. I also wouldn't trust training alone if ur dog likes chasing. Good effort anyway

No you don't have to go but if u find a well run school it's a great way to access other puppies and socialize. I took my nervous kelpie to two. The first was great. 9 people in a circle ist week and we played pass the puppy. I wanted to keep some of the cute fluffy ones and u should have seen other owners faces holding my crazy kelpie pup. Funnily she came back to me pretty quick! Next there was food thrown done and all the pups had a forage and gradually started to interact. It depends on pup size in the group too how much freedom they get. Really interesting how some pups behaviour is already a standout. Lot of vet advice which I found helpful as my first pup after rescues before. Lots of games and handouts from royal canine . Second school not so great but if u know what u r doing OK. I managed to avoid some pups and played tug and other games all over the surgery with my pup. Apparently the best toy here was the pee mop. It was hard to mop with half do pups on the mop. Some other pups in this class were a worry. So getting a good school important. Maybe one by a trainer if you can. A badly run class could do more harm then good, but you can always refuse to participate if things go pearshaped
