  1. My brother took his dog for the allergy test and following injections.cost a few thousand I think but otherwise a long time treating the problem. Worth investigating. My small Kelpie x and new Kelpie are allergic to grass. Winter OK but every summer..... I use cortavance spray now which is a topical cortisone rather than the ileum cream. Good luck with it. I also have some antihistamines that I use very irregularly for one. Who chews constantly. The cortivance btw works fast so use infrequently but its about $60 for a small 60ml bottle. But lasts for months. Dreading summer.

  3. Not sure but I would recall and if she dropped turn and run. Be surprising to lessen anticipation. And train the drop at close quarters while dog is aroused and tugging.
  4. So many choices! Wish I was looking. I love getting a new dog. I like getting different breeds, like there r so many I want to try.
  5. I don't immediately think of Schnauzer I must admit. Cavilier? Playful and cuddly, pretty easy going. Corgi ? Lovely dogs, not so common now. I can see the poodle being exactly like you describe. Good luck
  6. Thanks. Checking it out. Someone linked my to Pet food advisor. My costly food rated very low thou my dogs look good on it. Confusing but off to investigate. Ta
  7. What's the noseworks harness like. Would have liked that. I had my clubs trial on and couldn't make it. Bummer
  8. My friend has just asked me about this food and I don't know much about it so thought I'd ask those in the know. Thanks
  9. Sounds lovely. You must work very hard so you can bproud of you too.
  10. Great advice already. I have an anxious dog and somehow found a group on face book called Anxious Dogs of Australia Support Group. These guys might be of use to you. Knowledgeable about vet behaviourists and medication etc. Hope you feel more confident soon
  11. Some dogs like labs, retrievers are really popular.
  12. Lovely! I like all the sighthound.
  13. Funny we talked about heaters last note in class. Yes they definitely effect the scent. This topic because I asked if it was bad to search in windy conditions. Out of four dogs all r so different. And if I was honest although my dog is a champion to me , we had some awesome sniffers in class.
  14. Some people not recommended thou do wean at 6 weeks. LAzy people ? Not good for pups as they lose at least 2 weeks learning from mum. Sad
  15. Thanks Scottsmum Those videos were interesting. I would have to check with my instructor first but I'd love to share a video of my kelpie. LOve to see some videos of DOL dogs too?
  16. Sounds like you are a good puppy owner! Lots good tips. I don't really have to tell my dogs "no". Just call them or ask them to do something else. Sometimes I might say"really!!" To my Kelpie which for some reason makes her reconsider her choice. Lots of effort early on pays off when you end up with easy dogs as adults. Please need breed and photo
  17. Also I wonder if the trainer is referring to purely positive, as in let dogs do whatever with no rules. "Positive is not Permissive" is a great explanation
  18. I'm confused. If I didn't like a behaviour my pup was doing I would redirect to a behaviour I want and reinforce that behaviour. A rewarded behaviour has more chance of being repeated by the pup over unrewarded behaviour. Bearing in mind it is a pup who has no idea I would avoid giving the pup the chance to do something undesirable. If the behaviour if more rewarding to the pup this won't work like chasing another pup I just step in and stop behaviour. When does the can get shaken? If you play the name game and the pup loves his name surely that's a better pattern of behaviour. So if pup is running wild, a name call beats a can? If my pup was barking and really over aroused possibly a noise away from the pup that he doesn't associate with u could distract pup snuff that he can actually hear his name and respond. I want another puppy.
  19. How is the diet going? I changed food bowls to different sizes for my three to remind me the Chihuahua has a tiny belly regardless of her huge appetite!
  20. I don't knowuch about either sport as beginning both thou my Kelpie could is better suited to NW. We are playing with tracking and with two working dogs, its funny how each dog is different. The border collie is super competitive and will rush to find the hide (hidden scent). While she is super keen my Kelpie will move slower but with method to find the scent and get the hide first. My Kelpie will try to use her sight as well and if the thing the food is hidden in during class is obvious she will zoom to the object not the smell. Not what u want but not usually a problem except in one class they used a stick on blue plastic pot which the Kelpie soon recognized by sight more than smell. With tracking we started totally differently by leaving dog, walking out and leaving an object/toy. Once dropped we continue to walk away and return by another path. The dog is on lead and released to find it. If they follow the scent we move on, if they go off faster to zoom and find toy, we wait until they start sniffing the scent again before allowing them on. The border collie has the idea but goes really fast, moving back and forth. My kelpie r Might look like she isn't sniffing but generally she is where the scent is and as she gets closer she suddenly swoops on the object. Is it normal that dogs work differently? Particularly dogs of different breeds. Some seem to go slowly but carefully, mine tends to do sweeps and then casually locks on. You do see that lovely head snap when she gets there. Only learning but going to class as it helps motivate me. Tracking might be too many dogs out for my Kelpie. And she would rather run herding than sniffing but worth a play.
  21. I do moseworks in Wollongong. My Kelpie can't do the agility she lovesdue to HD. I created a dog that loves to work so this is a game she can play. Plus her nervous round rowdy dogs isn't an issue. Great game.
  22. I do agree with corvus but my dogs behavour is spuroitic so do not use any drug. I have considered it and just recently a trainer did comment on her behaviour when she was being particularly hypervigilant. She can walk thru busy places etc very happily Thou and when she was younger I shaped her to look at scary things but then used to wait till she offered to approach the scary thing. Eventually we shaped putting paws on the scary thing. Now we don't need this game much but for ages that was her go to behaviour. She really found it comforting and now puts paws or herself on things all the time as a game to play. But she is used to shaping so all pretty easy. Her fear is more off leash dogs so if she has a scary dog one day, could be for days after, she looks for it again. Hates skateboards, can be shaped to touch or ride one but still uncomfortable round them. My dog also does noseworks so we do that game in public places as well. Good luck with your dog, you might benefit with professional help. Thou sometimes it is just what you have to work with. I do what my dog is happy dealing with and all my training attempts help heaps but her issues still exist underneath. I learnt a lot with her.
  23. Yes, I have a kelpie and steered away from developing much of a ball fetishes. The strain on the body exists if u have a crazy ball mad dog. I turned more to using various tugs and food pouches I could throw as agility was my main interest and tugging is best for this. My kelpie did herding as well as nose works. She loves having a job as well as lots off leash running. At your dogs age I would be training more with social walking.herding is magic if u have somewhere to do it. My dogs love is in the suspense. Being asked to wait and then being released to do something. As we didn't always have sheep we did play herding round trees which although not the same, the best I could do. Any clubs in your area that u can attend training. I know it is a great love for many, but ball chucking to me is pretty boring. Don't get me wrong, at the beach I throw a toy into the surf. But we also to halts, walk ups, sit to sit pretty, backwards, any command I throw at her before telling her to get it. She loves it! They do suck at bringing the ball back to you and some young dogs like to play chases instead. Mine still tries to drop things a few steps away so hoping I will move. Don't fall for that. I got a toy to hand by going into the bathroom or small area, asked for nose touches that she knew already, asked for a touch when she had a dropped toy in her mouth , and rewarded that. Worked but she still drops things at my feet at times. So I wait and hold out the hand. She understands and will place the toy in my hand with a great deal of noise and mumbling. Try hard! Great dogs, lot of time training is worth it!
  24. The white throws you off but that is a kelpie mouth and tongue. Looks just like my Kelpies mouth. Sweet dog.
  25. Now I was wondering if I should start carrying a stick. If we do get attacked and it has happened then it avoids me using my hands. And I thought might make others think twice. However once I was physically threatened by a bloke after his dog run upto mine . the staffy was young and did back down to my old cranky chi x, but the guy was feral. He threatened and tried to "kick the shit out of" my little dogs. His dog was loose in an on lead area and I had pissed him off by asking if he could please put his dog on lead as mine were not friendly. Do I want a stick in that situation. I considered reporting to council but that would probably mean rangers booking people whose dogs are completely safe . in such a large area people can normally get along. Its just the odd aggressive dog. Shits me. To stick or not?
