Darcy must be the only dog here who has been on Nutro for months and had no improvements for me to want to keep him on it. The only change i noticed was his poo. Why does he have to be so difficult?!

Working Out Your Dog's Drive
Sayreovi replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It is useless but Darcy still remains in a very aroused state after the rabbit has gone, thats how he got his head stuck.....rabbit disappeared, he eventually found the hole it went down and tried to fit in too Thats the thing he isnt running after it like a loon thats what i consider Darcy lol, he runs but certainly not as fast as he should be to try and catch it. Ive tried taking him lure coursing before, didnt work lol he was only interested until he lost sight and went and done something else. He is just a very stubborn dog who has learnt to ignore me which is why i cant call him off. The only time i really think i see Nova in prey drive is while retrieving. However the reward is the ball and not something that i have as a reward for bringing the ball back. I have to find something that he wants more then anything in the world as the reward. -
Working Out Your Dog's Drive

Probably with a very high threshold too it, however food definately wins over prey. I dont think he is in full drive because as soon as the rabbit disappears he just stops plus i think he is mainly chasing because Darcy is so maybe not a drive thing but a possessive thing?, Darcy once got stuck in a rabbit hole trying to get to the rabbit lol Nova really only likes chasing things but only if he is retrieving. -
Thats Darcy to a T! Pain in the arse he is ;) I might give Nutrience a go now
-
LOL i was gonna say i could pick some up for you but i realise your area says South West not East

Another plug for Nutro from me, Darcy has put on some weight though its mainly muscle! He is a really picky eater and has been eating better then with other brands. I am very happy with it, they have much smaller poos and dunno if its what you want but their activity levels have increased especially Novas. However i havent seen any change in Darcys coat which is what i wanted to see, hopefully Nutro has a fish based one as he loves to eat fish and see how he goes on that. Pandii - Where abouts are you?

Obedience Training Before Show Training?
Sayreovi replied to OZ Grooming World's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Shoemonster, if they arent looking forward instead trying to look at your face then it completely stuffs up their gait and he would look horrid. I would imagine you would say heel and then try and get Eddies attention? In the ring you wouldnt say heel so there is no need for him to pay attention too you as he would in obedience. -
Thats what i thought as well, and perhaps a lead would do some good too!

Obedience Training Before Show Training?
Sayreovi replied to OZ Grooming World's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Really once your dogs are older, they can tell the difference between a show ring and obedience ring. With puppies use a difference collar for show training like a snake chain and a flat for obedience, they will know its different and know what they can and cant do. Besides if they are pups they can screw around a bit -
Working Out Your Dog's Drive
Sayreovi replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have no idea the answer to you question, but i would think its fairly easy to find out your dogs top drive. Maybe your dog is just obedient, i can call my Darcy off a rabbit and he has a really high prey drive whereas i cant do the same with Nova who has a much lower prey drive but he is also really stubborn and doesnt listen to me at times Nova is probably 50% food, 30% pack and 20% prey Darcy is 60% prey, 25% pack, 15% food -
A Thread In Rescue Section
Sayreovi replied to MonElite's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
do you know who was posting in the thread? and what experience they have? Did you not read the maybe? Yes i know who was posting in the other read, i had read every post right up to Troys closing post. Do you know what experience they have? You were posting it took several days for someone too offer, why were you pushing people to take a dog when maybe they werent qualified to look after it? It was fairly obvious that very few of those who posted had enough experience and/or time to deal with a people aggressive dog when so many other nice dogs need urgent foster care. No rescue people offered because of that reason, they have enough on their plate at the moment. -

Tollersowned - I cant teach my dog to heel properly and you are asking me why didnt I offer help for a human agro dog? Sorry out of my league - just slightly.............. Well you saying it took several days for someone to offer, maybe they feel they dont have enough experience to deal with a dog like that or feel like Cordelia does. Too point out that it took such and such time for someone to step forward and help is quite rude. -

Thanks for replying to me lilli without any malice. I didnt intend my post as accusing if it came across that way, i was truly interested in your responses in case i happen to find a dog of my chosen breeds that had "issues" and how to deal with them. Steve, please dont stop posting here you have opened mine and several others eyes about training and behaviour and because of you i am able to control Nova now. You have also helped several others so dont let a few idiotic people who degrade you stop you from feeling appreciated because thats far from it!!! Great post Muttly -

Yes tollers. Anatolian Rescue is willing / does takes / has taken / is taking dogs that have been described by their owners as doing the above. Please, if thinking of their rehoming causes you trouble, then dont. It does concern me actually that someone would rehome a dog known to try and attack a child. What happens if that dog bites a child then? Were the potential adopters aware that the said dog had behaved aggressively towards a person? I admire you for rescuing dogs and finding them good homes, but why would you take a people aggressive dog known for trying to attack instead of another nice friendly dog that urgently needed a home? Did you find it hard to rehome these dogs? I apologize for all the questions but it truly does confuse me as too why you would considering the reasons people sue now a days. Cosmolo, not sure if you post was directed at me or not but i assure you that mine was certainly not directed at you ;) -

Absolutely false. That's some sweeping, uninformed generalisation tollers. So you would be willing to take a dog that has lunged at and if it had not been intercepted would have harmed a child? Considering you take quite large dogs i would hate to think you would rehome one that has done so. Perhaps i misworded, some would help but they wouldnt take the dog. I meant to say take not help. -

I agree 100%, the attitude by a select few was appalling!!! I was angered by some of the responses to K9 there, he has more experience in training "problem" dogs in his little finger then some of those people making ridiculous accusations have in their entire body. I still cant get over it...... Myszka, why didnt you offer to help? Most of the people who replied wouldnt know what to do with a dog that presented itself with these problems. I would have offered to take if i knew what the hell too do. The only person who offered got attacked and degraded, certainly puts off helping in future doesnt it? Why the OP didnt post in the training section first is beyond me, no rescue would even consider helping a dog that has lunged at a child regardless of why it did. The only real chance the dog had was in here. -
I finally got Nova up to a competing stage in something lol Next year i will start trialling Darcy in Flyball, agility and dabble a bit in shows and obedience. Nova we will just be working on agility and flyball.
-
Conformation shows are helluva lot less extrenous then trials, thats why they are still allowed to run in the heat. You will find that the majority of dogs attending on the day would be short coated breeds though. I personally dont attend it it is going to be about 30 and over, my dog has a really thick heavy coat so it would be wrong of me to try and expect him too do something. TigerJack, i think they should bring the evening flyball comps down here they sound really good!
-
Geez You knew it was going to be hot, possibly going up to 40 degrees (which it did) and you still went out there expecting to compete?!

Mmm thanks PJ, i will go but try and buy later tickets so they dont have to run in the heat. -
I wanted a dog to do agility and flyball with, i wouldnt have gotten a breed that couldnt do it well. So i guess the sport came before the breed. Though my favourite breeds are the ones suited to the sports so i didnt have to stray far lol
