  1. To be honest, the dog doesnt need to want too chase a ball. In flyball the ball is stationary so if they excited by movement only then you will still need to teach them to get the ball. Just like if they dont like balls much. As SM said ideally the ball shouldnt be the reward anyway, thats how it makes the dog go down fast and slow back. The reward should be whatever you have, but the only way the dog gets the reward is if he brings the ball back. If you come too a comp you will see the dogs that have been trained that way and dogs that have been trained that the ball is the reward. The first dogs will have the same speed down and back, the second wont. You cant write off a dog without seeing it in action and besides if you persist long enough any dog would be able too do flyball. The only musts that i know of for flyball is they have to be dog and people friendly, they dont have too be over the top friendly but due too close proximately with the other dogs and people other then their owners holding them they have too accept that. ETA: I also go too Berwick Obedience, fingers crossed there is training this weekend.
  2. I didnt know it was in a bad way either till someone else told me would hate too have turned up let the dogs run and they hurt themselves badly. If tomorrow is nice as today i will be going back out there for the water, so will take some photos and show you what it is like.

    Bailey

Rest in Peace little guy. He recently suffered terribly from a respitory illness something that is deadly in rats. He was given only a few days too live but managed another few weeks and i really thought he was getting better Sweet little guy waited till i was holding him and he passed away quietly this afternoon. Bailey was only 2 years old. Bailey was able too open his cage door and would always come and lay on your foot till you picked him up and cuddled him. I will miss you heaps, my little fat rat, RIP
  4. Word of warning, i was out there today and the ground is in very bad shape. There are lots of cracks in the ground. So unless something dramatical happens between now and then we wont be there, too hazardous especially for the faster dogs.
  5. Cant let that go can you? Nova is smart enough too have figured out many many ways too challenge me and "forget" things. Nor did i train him any more then once a week. He is fast becoming one of the most reliable dogs in the team who wont run over and interfere with the other team because of all the work i did with him. Why do you care how "smart" Nova is or not? That has nothing too do with you at all. Dont forget intelligence doesnt always equal trainability. Why are you trying too compare two completely different dogs? That is pretty stupid especially when they are nothing alike.
  6. I am glad my guys arent obesessed with tennis balls enought too sit there and chew them. Have a few tennis balls laying around the yard from neighbours kids LOL Mine do flyball as well, but they arent chompers on the ball like i know some dogs do.
  7. No where near as often as i should be Maybe once a week where i do a full run through for obedience with both dogs, then maybe focus on certain bits and do a little more training that way. Probably about 30 minutes each but i am constantly swapping dogs too keep them "fresh"
  8. Not sure what losing your temper means? Ive become extremely frustrated at training a few times especially when Nova was younger, it was hard as he was a frustrating dog too train and i was very inexperienced.....i was 14-15 at the time. Ive never hit my dogs out of anger though. I always put them away if i or they become frustrated. Have never been lost my temper or become any where near as frustrated with Darcy as i had been with Nova.
  9. LOL they really vary that much? The ones i had been too started at smaller dogs.....i should really go too more LOL
  10. It has changed now. It is one membership fee and thats it. Used too be expensive for me to with two dogs so i am glad its changed  TB We will be there if its not too hot
  11. Correct me if i am wrong but i do believe that they start at smaller dogs first.
  12. Yes i do and so does Shoemonster. Ive found it quite easy now because i have gotten too levels in flyball and agility with both dogs that they dont clash  I get there early about 11.30-12.00 so i am one of the first few people there, so my car is closest too the training ground, i either leave the dogs in the back while training the other, if it gets too hot i put them in a crate in the shade. I can always see them so it works for us. It costs more to have two dogs, but its the member ship and i think its about $20 extra?
  13. LOL well not here!! Nova is fine and learns very quickly even through my bad training, average about 5 repititions. Darcy however is a different story, he is smart but its my bad training that screws him up, he is extremely eager and throws himself into it, sometimes faster then my response to C/T at the correct time. I am not good with my body language either and Darcy watches me like a hawk LOL it is hard too change an old habit as when Nova was younger he wouldnt care where i was or what i was doing now that has changed but i havent yet  So smart dogs but a bad trainer here.
  14. Congrats and good luck at your upcoming trial.
  15. There seem too be alot more rules and guide lines this time. I will hopefully be there with Darcy.
  16. Anyway, i think most people have a problem with the fact that you have labelled a puppy dumb and slow. I still cant comprehend that, looking at all your videos of all the behaviours and tricks she is doing and then too come and see you said in a round about way that she is dumb its You have been told by several experienced dog trainers too slow it down, she is a puppy she doesnt need too know all tricks and obedience exercises as quick as possible, maybe have a read and take in what they said rather then ignoring them. Basic obedience is great but give her a chance too grow up a bit before writing her off
  17. After my first few trials, which went horribly wrong because i was that nervous i was shaking LOL i am not going too enter any trials until my dogs are proofed under heaps of distractions which includes me scared s**tless. Personally i would love for them too pass but i dont expect it so either way if i lose or win i wont have had any expectations on my dogs too pass. That being said my dogs can do all exercises really well, it is always me that makes us fail :D Great threads Leopuppy, the training forum had become a little dull lately
  18. Ohh yes i was guilty of this, i had a food driven dog and figured Darcy would be the same that was until i learned about TID and my god when he is in drive he is a pleasure too work with LOL Thats why i have no expectations of when i want the exercise too be solid. Sure i would love too trial with either of my two but if it doesnt happen it doesnt happen no biggy Gee i hope that doesnt happen too often, each dog should be treated like a companion as a much loved pet not another dog too put titles on. Agreed, like Leopuppy mine are on break over Christmas and pretty much most week days LOL They have a pretty laid back life at the moment. Guilty of this too when Darcy was younger :D That is true but there is no need too go over board, even if the puppy is eager too learn, let the puppy be just that, a puppy. Honestly i dont see the rush of training everything young, Nova is 4 and only just starting too compete in sports and i trained him a fair bit when he was young so i think i burnt him out in obedience. Now we are getting back into it after about 1 1/2 years break and he is happy and excited about it. Darcy was an air head, a typical puppy with a 3 second attention span. I decided too let him grown a brain and try again in about a year. It turned into 2 years but he has such a high drive and willingness too please, i couldnt be happier with how he turned out. Should add after reading other posts, i dont think anyone doesnt train a puppy at all i am talking about doing full on obedience training.
  19. For agility you have too be in at least yellow class or show control of your dog as well as preferably have a good recall. With the trial class its the same as agility except you have too be in blue class (highest you can go) or show your dog is capable of all the exercises. There is no set time you basically show up put your name down and be ready when they call you in but its best too be down early as sometimes they cut off after a certain time or amount of dogs. Ive only been in that ring a couple of times with Nova (who is in blue) SM is correct the higher you go in the classes the more advanced and trial based it becomes, especially in blue and green where is nearly all off lead. They do the stays and all exercises required for Novice. There are heaps of experienced people who trial who will help if asked for specific exercises.
  20. There you go LOL Jewel sometimes turns up as well so it will well and truly be a family affair
  21. Ohh another Staffy!! You guys can have your own team eventually with Shoeys two and Mav lol
  22. I go there with my two. Too hot today, they cancel if its forcasted too be 32 degrees and over. We do agility and one of my dogs is in a flyball team
  23. Uhh LOL you had shepherds, retrievers and now a collie, they arent exactly the dumbest dogs going around. Intelligence doesnt equal trainability. Flame suit?
  24. Have too agree with this theory rather then the first taught one, Nova wasnt taught the tunnel first, it was one of the last ones actually. I didnt start him in any agility training until he was old enough too do it all. Unfortunately though he gets sucked into the tunnel on the first go, the second run through is fine as he realises thats not what i asked
