What Are Dolers Feeding Their Dogs
Sayreovi replied to Baileys mum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I feed my two BARF, thinking of changing too the prey model diet as it looks good. One of mine was exceptionally picky, and he looked terrible when growing up, he just wouldnt eat and i could not not feed him for a couple of days because he was already that thin. He loves his food now, and although he is looking rangy at the moment (hot days dont agree with his stomach) he looks brilliant through winter! -
So Many Different Breeds......

Is Callaghan doing the Nationals? Would love too see a wolfie doing flyball....and a pug too would be awesome! -
One of mine (Nova) goes nuts for flyball, he really enjoys it and i love running him. He has been racing for over a year now and its only in the last six months that he has become competitive himself. My other boy (Darcy) has only been in three comps and is still warming too the idea of it all. He just enjoys having a day out with mum Darcy wasnt really a ball freak, would run after them and then stop, wouldnt bring it back. Now he is a ball freak and generally runs faster down then back but using the right toy i can get him back heaps faster. Just remember its all about having fun, and even if your dog isnt the fastest out there who cares, i would rather a slow steady reliable dog then an unreliable fast one

So Many Different Breeds......

We will be at Canberra too, so hopefully will see you there Our team has Borders, a Staffy (with another nearly ready), Tollers, SWF, Kelpie, Lab and a fair few crossbreeds. While working breeds do excel in the sport, i do love watching other breeds run.....and i do a little happy dance when a team full of 'misfit' breeds beats one that is three quarter BCs -
Too be honest, i did everything you have done Joypod, except for the Vic Market though thats mainly due to it being so far away. When my dogs were pups they went everywhere, mostly were carried but were also put down so they could use their own legs and get used to things at their level (and also to toilet them ) Locking the pup up in the house until 16 weeks, has basically 'ruined' your dog to being happy and social. I kinda thought like Settrlvr, you can bring parvo into your house by your shoes, clothes, your other dogs.....so i exercised a little caution and just avoided direct contact with strange dogs IMO Vaccinations arent the be all and end all of protection, after all vaccinated healthy adult dogs get parvo.....there are some breeders who dont vaccinate their puppies at all or only give one much later at 12-16 weeks and their pups dont get parvo

I do this most weekends. As they are rewarded with food and get fed the same amount as they would in a meal i dont see a problem with it, though some think what i do is mean but they arent the ones who are training my dogs.

If you have time and are sort of handy, how about making them? Would save you tonnes of money

How To Teach A Male Dog Not To Lift His Leg?
Sayreovi replied to oceanaussi's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Havent read the thread but i wish i knew!!!! I have a pee-aholic He does it when he is excited, stressed, sometimes just cause and i have to give him a wee break before we do any 'work' Its not going to change now as he is 5, i will say that desexing done nothing but i never expected it too as it was ingrained into him already. -
Freezing Home Made Barf Patties
Sayreovi replied to JeffnCel's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Honestly dont know enough about if its OK or not. Ive just found it easier to divide up every day if they are seperate, as i have two dogs that get different amounts. -
IMO it depends on the dog. A dominant dog it probably isnt a good idea as it will show how strong it is compared too you especially if its a larger dog. I play tug of war with both dogs, occasionally i win sometimes they do. Most of the time they do as it makes them more drivey to get the toy. After all who wants to play when they always lose? Both dogs love it so i consider it a good game.

Freezing Home Made Barf Patties
Sayreovi replied to JeffnCel's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I do bulk buys and divide it up every 2 months, well actually i do it every month but i only have a certain amount of room, so after a month i have enough room to buy more meat then the next month i do the veggies and so on. I freeze mine in containers as i find it easier, probably would have room if i did it in bags but it would be hard to seperate. Also dont mix the meat and veggies together they are frozen seperately. -
" Take The Guess-work Out Tour " Victoria
Sayreovi replied to Erny's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Good, i will be waiting for that email..... Interested in learning more about training in drive, but if it isnt included i will still be there -
Nova - Would like to really focus on agility and obedience, doesnt matter if we dont compete this year as he needs to become really solid before i attempt it again!! Also plan on giving tracking a go. Darcy - Like Nova i will be focusing on agility and obedience more but we will be competing as soon as the season starts again. Would like to achieve at least an ADX and CDX but we will see how we go. Tracking is on the agenda as well and (hopefully) retrieving trials, only beginner tests as i dont have the time to train for "proper" classes

Newbie Starting Training To Be A Trainer!
Sayreovi replied to Lozi's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I think that the Dog Trainers Certificate doesnt require any previous experience but you must be able to read and write in English well. The others require some experience or you completing the DTC first. I havent done the course but i would like to soon. -
Training Different Dogs And Different Sports
Sayreovi replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
LP Where do you go and what nights are they? I need too work on agility more but have been on K9s waiting list for nearly a year I do nearly all my obedience training at home, do flyball and agility on the weekend. Not doing any 'serious' training over the summer (unless i can get into an agility club), taking a needed break from everything and everyone. -
My mum works in a nursing home too, its where alot of the people socialization took place. I would only allow pup too meet calm dogs that i know first. The OTT ones can wait and only then on lead. Depends on what your pup will be like though, if he is pretty out going then i would let him meet a few active dogs earlier otherwise i would be easing them in slowly for less confident pups. ETA: Are you getting a blue merle this time?
-
Sounds good......i love training puppies Though another thing i would add on too old people is wheel chairs and walking frames. Maybe try and find a nursing home that will allow you too take your pup in?
-
I agree. I wouldnt start any dog under 18 months, especially on contacts, a fall at that age can be very damaging both physically and mentally. Alot of what you describe sounds like uncoordination! Even more reason to wait they have grown up to start doing agility. While i dont like babies doing agility, i agree with what Amypie has said in regards other things too train which is what i would focus on first.
-
Well done guys for yesterday!! Big congrats.....especially to prodigybxr, a HIT with a Pug in yesterdays weather was amazing
-
Ahh to have a fast weaver!! When training my youngest dog i got him too go through fast initially and even though he missed weavers i got the speed i wanted, once i had the speed i focused on getting a clean run and only rewarding that. I wouldnt want to slow her down either, alot of dogs seem too lose time on weaving. I agree with Vicki and help by off setting the poles slightly to remind her what too do when at training
-
Ive seen a couple in flyball, i think they were from NSW..... Havent seen any compete down here in flyball I dont really pay much attention to other dogs at agility/obedience trials
-
Yup he is a Toller. I did start out like BC wrote, but he made up his own game along the way and eventually started just jumping and turning rather then just walking. I did try and get him a little excited before the return so he was more then likely going to be springy. So i didnt really train it, so cant help you there, my dog trained himself to do a more fun finish
-
One of mine knows both, he gets to do the flip finish if he did a good job, he does the whole leaping up and turning at the same time so its more exciting for him to do. Eventually i will use it in the ring but for now its the 'proper' finish
-
Dont think we have ever had puppy classes so due to his age you will probably be turned away. I dont even think about starting them until they are at least 12 months old, thats just me though.
