  1. Thanks Crisovar I don't think she's been brushed since her coat drop, and it tends to stay in her fur rather than going everywhere, which I guess is both a blessing (for our couches) and a curse!
  2. Do you just keep brushing until no more hair comes out? I've been at it for over half an hour & it still seems like big chunks of fur are coming out. She seems to be over it, should I stop before we both lose our will to live?
  3. What a beautiful tribute, LMWS Odin was indeed a gorgeous little guy and I know how excited Veanna was to have her white sheppy. Veanna, our thoughts are with you at this time Roggie will show Odin the ropes up on Rainbow Bridge and showing all the best spots to chase butterflies
  4. Thank you all for your beautiful words

Goodbye my special little guy. You were hard work, but well worth the effort. I'll never forget all the goofy things you did, the way you'd run into the room whenever Yoko Ono's song came on rage just to stare at the telly while she attempted to sing. Whenever I look into my rear vision mirror, I'll always see you resting your chin on the backseat. I'll miss your face inspections while I try to nap, your quiet companionship while I fixed dinner, and how you kept my feet warm during winter. Thanks to you I've learned so much about life and about myself. From you I now know what it means to be a good dog owner. Your lessons will allow me to open my heart to future dogs and turn them into good doggy citizens. Your memory will live on. Thank you for your unconditional love. I'm so sorry I couldn't do more for you.
  6. OH. MY. GOD!!!! 10lbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Haven, you're a champ! She's absolutely adorabubble :D You've made me clucky now :D
  7. So do I, DD. And yes ..... I understand it too. ETA : I think I have been able to source a Vet within 'do-able' distance to my client and who will present with an open and knowledgeable mind as far as the matter relates to thyroid and behaviour and thyroid meds . Thanks Penski. And thanks to others who responded here. Is this vet also able to do the required testing within Australia? If so, could I pretty please have their details too?
  8. Lelune, this site sells great books, dvds, and equipment. They're reasonably priced & shipping is quite fast
  9. Personally, I would want to proof with a long line before springing that kind of money for a remote collar, it's a lot of money to spend! My boy, Roggie is now getting really reliable on long line & our next step will be remote training. Whether he's working with a remote collar or a long line, he should start in a low distraction environment & proof the recall there before moving on to small distractions & increasing the distractions as the dogs gets a better recall. I agree with Rugerfly, he might need to work on his leadership with doggy, & has to be super interesting to the dogs - more interesting for doggy than getting to go sniff other dog bottoms! I know that there has to be a period of time where the dog carries around the collar (or a dummy collar) & some trainers can lend out their dummy boxes, but I'm not too sure about hiring the remote collars themselves. Personally (again! ) I'd buy one myself considering I'd be using it as a training tool for a long time rather than just a short term hire.
  10. Aaahhh! MsJames is now assuaged with lovely puppy brefs pics!
  11. YAY!!!! He's simply adorable! I'm getting my "team pup" tshirts printed & pom poms ordered as we type Seriously though, Sarah: Great name for a dog :nods: Think about it  ETA: btw, 5 pages and only ONE picture?? You're letting the team down, yknow
  12. From a 12 volt battery. As I understand it, "shock" was a word more in line with the early-day stim-collars (or e-collars) ..... where the current (?) generated went through the dog's neck to a contact point on the other side of the collar. Stim or e-collars are much more sophisticated now (as is their use in training methodology) and the stimulation created by the 12 volt battery travels only through the skin to the nearby contact point. Gemibabe .... what training method would you use and how, to reliably achieve proofing against (eg) a high prey drive dog (eg) chasing live-stock ?? Erny, I don't want to come to blows over this, but this isn't right. Inside the ecollar is a circuit which boosts the 12 volts to somewhere between 500 -2000 volts. I hesitate to write this beause it seems a little sensational. What happens is that the cirucit is high impedance, once the current starts flowing the voltage drops back. A good article to read is on the Taser Denis Cody Dennis C, you are, in fact, being sensationalist. In my understanding of such matters, E collars are a lower energy device for shorter periods rather than a continuous circuit: Your 500 to 2000 volts are indeed a lot of voltage, but contain very little current, probably microamp range. So therefore a device such as an E collar will give a tingling sensation rather than a paralysation as used in tasers. Unless, of course, you know something of the laws of physics that we are not privy to?
  13. Bella & Roggie respond to "are you hungry?" and "dinner" by running to their bowls & patiently waiting
  14. We all suck when we start out! Did he explain NILIF to you? Sounds like pup is a great candidate for it, and it's absolutely invaluable for leadership Sounds like you've got a nice long road ahead of you, but I'm positive things will turn out great for you both Good luck!!
  15. I always pause my youtube videos before I play them, then I don't have to stop-start waiting for the buffering to complete...when I paused, I have to say it stopped on the most impressive set of testicles I've seen in a long time Monelite, Rex looks like he's having the time of his life in that video! I could only identify one moment when I thought that maybe he might have been corrected (when you asked him to stop & he took a few more steps?), but I couldn't be too sure. Well done!
  16. Awww what cuties! I love the little evil eyebrows rotties have
  17. Hear! Hear! I hate that mentality of equating disagreement with bullying. It's getting very, very old. The people in this thread are passionate about educating owners as to all training methods and choosing the right tool for your dog. They have done so in an informative & non-confrontational manner. The trainers here give their time and expertise freely, and for that I am extremely grateful. No one disagrees with purely positive methods, but we all have to understand that not one method will work for all dogs. Shouting "cruelty!" when faced with an obviously emotionally manipulative video will achieve one thing: the uneducated masses will fear the tool without any further interest in pursuing the truth regardless of logical debate.
  18. You can't start a thread like this & not have pictures of you & Maddy in action!
  19. I have to admit, before I started training my guys I was one of those alarmist "oh my god those things look awful" type of people for training tools as simple as a check chain. If it hadn't been for trainers like Cosmolo & Erny showing me their correct use & the benefits they could bring with an integrated training plan, my DA boy Roggie would now have been put down & we would have gotten another dog & done the same mistakes again. Exactly who does that benefit?
  20. You can get long line leads from most training grounds. Alternatively, you can also use a horse's lunge line as well
  21. No one on dol does more work to educate people as to the right training method for their dog than Erny does. It's clear that you have no critical thinking abilities, or the desire to see anything beyond your own experience. If you want testament to disrespect, I highly recommend that you look over your own posts.
  22. Can you explain the above statement? I don't understand what you mean E collars are usually used for remote training. And invisible fencing are generally used on larger properties.
  23. We use 1.5m leather leads as well as they offer the versatility of letting the dog sniff around, but can be quickly looped when you need it shorter (for crossing the road, etc).
  24. Then don't use it. Simple isn't it? Personally, I feel that using a clicker is a lazy form of training, but you never see me bitching about it in clicker threads. Different forms of training work on different dogs, and I find it insulting when people bag out a training tool an owner uses when the owner has obviously taken the time, effort, and personality of the dog into account to achieve the best result for their dog.
