That's very sad, i only made a comment about her in your photo thread the other day. Cancer took my old girl last year in very similar circumstances. She also lost her strength in her back legs and i also only had her for seven years, from 4 to 11.

That was well done.

Do You Give Guarantees? Do You Expect Guarantees?
RL1 replied to Cosmolo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
My female Rotty had a very minor eye surgery and for 3 and a half weeks went back and forth to the same vet and no results were achieved. I took her to another vet and the problem was solved within a week. I had to pay the original vet fees. -
Do You Give Guarantees? Do You Expect Guarantees?
RL1 replied to Cosmolo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I don't expect a guarantee from a trainer, that's impossible to ask or expect a guarantee. I expect a trainer to be honest and not to take on a dogs problem unless they have the experience. How can a trainer give a guarantee anyway ? If the owner doesn't take on board what they've been instructed to do and follow through with the training, it'll never work anyway. -
I think the ratio of good to bad behaved Rotts is more than " probably a few around that are nice and well mannered". I know my 8 year old bitch is considered the most friendly, tolerant and gentle dog by all at the local off leash park.

Pet Insurance Australia - Anyone Have It?
RL1 replied to chichihuahua's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
A friend of mine has all her dogs bar one insured with Petplan. One dog alone has racked up $8000 in vet bills for this year alone. I was going to insure my male dog, but he's in the "select" breed group which did have a cut off age of 8, but now it's 5. So i missed out. -
Pressure Point Collar (aka Prong) Discussion Welcome
RL1 replied to Erny's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I'm also another dog owner who had never heard of or even seen a prong collar before i stumbled upon this website and joined this forum. After trying 4 - 5 different dog trainers/behaviorists to solve my problem Rottweiler, without any success, i tried one more, K9 Force. After assessing my dog, Steve recommended the prong collar for my dog and i was shown how to correctly use it. To date, this is the only collar that has given me any control over my problem Rottweiler. It may not be suitable for every dog, but in my opinion it's ideal and effective for my dog. -
One trainer who i won't name, charged me $110 for an assessment that took him all of about 5 - 10minute's. He spent about 20 minutes after that talking to me. Too hard basket once again. ......I'm now starting a program through email from K9 Force. Looks promising.

"i Am Not Doing This To Please Anyone!"
RL1 replied to Tonymc's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Dog is happy. Owner is happy. Dog is behaving. I think you have too much time on your hands when you feel you must disect and study the relationship between this dog and it's owner who are out having a fun time minding their own business. If someone came up to me and started going on about prey drives and fallacys ect ect. while i was out having fun with my dog i'd say you'd be the one who would come across as full of yourself. -
Please Help! Chases Ppl Aggressively
RL1 replied to free's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Lol, i had the same trainer by the sounds of it. The chain thrower. Qualifications received from the inside of a cornflake's box. -
I will think long and hard next time before i take on a mature dog with existing problems.
-
Depends on the trainer you see. I've been recommeded to use choke chains by one, another will say no use a halti, another says to use a harness for back up
-
All these dogs with attitudes towards other dogs should make for an interesting weekend for the owners.

Successful Training Methods For Dog Aggression
RL1 replied to 4 Paws's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I appreciate the advice Nekhbet, but i think i've finally arranged a meeting with the right person to have a look at my dog. To cut a long story short, my dog has a bad history and several trainers had no luck with him and the last one basically said i shouldn't even have him at my home. I'm hoping this trainer we're seeing will prove the rest wrong. -
Successful Training Methods For Dog Aggression
RL1 replied to 4 Paws's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
this says to me the dog is either 1) having problems coping with the outside world and it does not look to you for leadership in how to cope 2) happily controlling the home environment (hence the perceived notion of 'angel' at home) and outside the dog steps up the game. If the dog considers you boss you are boss. Either way you are not the boss but a source of food and pats, probably on the dogs demand. I have a rotty they are bloody good at getting what they want when they want in a sneaky fashion. Getting someone to come in and watch how you interact with the dog is the first port of call, you may find a lot is on the dogs terms. Outside you are the LEAST interesting thing now hence the convenient deafness. You make some good points there. Whether you're correct or not i'm not sure. I like your "convenient deafness" term, that's a good way of putting it. I won't go back over all the details, but i've had several trainers look at him over the past few years. -
Successful Training Methods For Dog Aggression
RL1 replied to 4 Paws's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Yes possibly, but i don't know why he does it. It would be a big help if i could find someone who could show me the basics of handling this type of dog and what to do when he decides not listen ect. Even the most suitable collar and leash ect. to use. Usually he's just put in the too hard basket........I was booked in last month, but couldn't attend. There is a workshop up here in November, but i really need a personal assessment done with this dog. -
Successful Training Methods For Dog Aggression
RL1 replied to 4 Paws's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
That isn't the case with my dog. He's an angel at home and doesn't put a foot out of line and knows i'm the boss, but get out in public and he's another dog, doesn't listen or do a thing i say. -
I'm sure the workshop would be great, but at this stage my dog and myself need one on one help, not in a group environment.

Hey Seita, can you try and convince the K9 Force team to take on some private consults.
-
When i was looking for a decent trainer, several people on here recommended Jane Harper. I never used her so i don't know what she's like. I can't recommend any other trainers here in Brisbane. The one's i tried weren't too crash hot.
-
Yes i could do that, i might just buy another packet. Thanks anyway.

I accidentally left my new box of Interceptor tablets in with the dogs chicken in the freezer for a day and a half, does anyone know if they'll still be ok to use ?
-
I currently use a 4ft nylon leash, which prob. isn't the best option for my dog, strength wise. I feel that a 6ft leash would give him too much play and the possibility he could lunge towards another dog. However, with the right training a 6ft leash might be better. I should've gone to the Rotty Nationals today and had a look what they're using.
-
I have 5 , 6, 12 , 30 foot lead here to walk the Rotties ( waiting on a 7 foot lead) all leather leads bar the 30 foot its webbing ( horse lunge lead) I think you could try a obedience lead with a ring on the handle that way you could have it as a 6 foot lead or clip it up to make it shorter if you need to. try K9 force for leads .........I have one ot those also :D Yes, i'm looking at the leads on the K9 Force site, they have a 4ft or 6ft leather style, in their premium range. I was advised to go for the 6ft, although i would've thought a shorter leash would give me more control. I don't know.

15ft leash ? How do you use a 15ft, is that one of those retractable things ?
