  1. I spoke to the owners this afternoon and went over to their home and met the pup. They were both very nice about it. I was quite surprised. The total cost was over $4000. The puppy was in Sunday night and came home this afternoon after a stay at the Vets/Hospital. He has one clean break between the elbow and shoulder ??, plus there are another couple breaks further down. He also has some small puncture's near his foot, but the vets aren't convinced my dog has bitten, or if he has, they're only very minor. There aren't any decent puncture marks at all. Clearly i think if he was intent on biting, there would be obvious large puncture wounds visible. They think the cause of the broken bones is because of the force applied to the pups leg up against the fence. It's clean broken the top and possibly the leg has been forced up a second time and caused more breaks further down. They told me a big chunk of the bill was due to the first overnight stay. All the x rays and pain relief medication ect. They were good about the situation and even stated how they know it was an accident and made the point that i do the right thing with my dogs and have the good fencing, always have the gates closed ect ect. The husband was telling me the reaction from his brother in law, which is typical and one i'd expect when an incident happens with a large dog, even more so with a rottweiler. The response was "so what is going to happen to the other dog ? "". As if it was a planned, savage attack from a roaming dog on the street. I've told them i'll contribute something towards the bill and come and see how the pup is on the weekend. Of course they've said i don't need to, but what else would you expect. I'm just unsure what i should contribute. Any thoughts ?
  2. No, i haven't spoken to them since it happened. I will go see them once the rain stops. The neighbour did speak briefly about fixing the gap just after the incident, before his wife started calling out to him. Goodwill does still exist. I don't believe i could be up for any or all of the vet bill, if there turns out to be one. I won't be getting legal advice for a small incident like this. He wasn't running, i shouldn't have said that. I was aware he was interested in what was going on next door, but he wasn't showing any signs of aggression. I was outside with him at the time, but i can't keep watch over him 24/7. That's the idea of having secure fencing.
  3. They're nice enough. The husband seemed fine with it, but the wife was a bit funny. All my fences are inside the boundary, all paid for by myself. I don't know the technical or legal issue's this has. All i know is i have excellent fencing that keeps my own dogs safe, secure and contained inside their own property. I can't be expected to build a fence to suit every other persons pet requirements. Everyone needs to take some responsibility.
  4. If it turns out the pup was injured and it did require some treatment last night i will consider what to contribute. Any money given will only be a gesture of goodwill, as you've already suggested. As far as the legal issue stands, i don't believe any action could be taken against myself or my dog at all under the circumstances i explained. Furthermore, it was hardly an attack or serious injury.
  5. I don't think it will come to that, they seem like nice enough people up this point. I think your theory is prob. what has happened. I can't see how they could make a report to the council. My dogs are registered, have a clean history and i have excellent fencing, apart from this one small gap where the earth has eroded or been dug. My dog was inisde his yard. I think it's just an unfortunate accident. No, i'm not going that far. It's a cheap fix. Just needs something on top of the retaining wall to fill the gap. Was the neighbour involved in the building of the fence or any of the cost? No, i paid for all the fencing here myself. That way i get what i want.
  6. I haven't been to see them yet. it's pouring here and i don't think they're home yet. I'd only pay as a nice gesture, not from a legal point of view. As above.. No, i think that's going a bit far. I think the neighbours have to take some responsibility here. I don't even know if there is any injury.
  7. There will be a bill. The only ER around here is the one at West Chermside and they charge like there's no tomorrow.
  8. There aren't any gaps in the fence itself, but there is some gap i didn't know about below the fence ( where the ground has eroded or been dug ), which would allow the pup to get part of it's body under. My block slope's, so the fence is also on top of a retaining wall. Some parts of the wall are 1m high, with the fence on top of that. But the pup got part of it's body under the section where it slopes down low.
  9. I already told him to let me know the cost. He was ok about it, but his wife was calling out to him while we were speaking. I think she's made more out of it. I can't blame her, i'd be worried if my new pup was screaming. I think they're first time dog owners too. They've gone out, so no doubt they're at the ER. I did find some of the dogs hair on my side of the fence. I just don't know if my dog has grabbed the pup, had a bite or what's happened. I hope it was a case of fright, not any real injury. I guess i'll find out tomorrow, or even tonight.
  10. No, they weren't. I mean all the owners calling and excitement with the new dog has caught the attention of my dog, plus all the puppies barking and play noise. My dog is really active and very alert, so he's very eager to find out about any new activity. I've tried to do the right thing here. I've spent about $8000 plus on fencing and i never leave the front gates open. I can't really help it if another dog make's it's way into my yard. In saying that, i don't want to see another dog get injured. It's a pain. I have a female rotty who is the best behaved, most loved dog you could meet. The male was a rescue, who had a very bad original owner so owning him has been difficult at time's.
  11. As the title suggests, my male Rottweiler and the neighbours new puppy had a little run in this afternoon. The neighbours got a dog about 2 weeks ago, some sort of designer dog i think, not that that matters one bit. My male has been going up and down the front fence trying to see the new dog. All the owners calling and the pups noise gets his attention and he tries to see through a small gap. I'm washing the car this afternoon and i hear the screaming and the pups front leg is under the fence and into my yard and my dog has either grabbed it or playing with it, i'm unsure. Being a puppy i'm not sure how much of the screaming was due to an injury or fright. The owner was nice about it. He asked me did i see what happened, but it all happened so quickly. I do have 6 foot high, solid hardwood fencing on all side's and my dogs are only out the front when i am. It looks like they've taken it to get x rays because it's limping on the front leg. I've asked him to let me know what happens and what it cost's. Should i just pay the full amount, or offer half, or what's the general rule when this happens ? Edit.........To say my dog has never attacked or bitten another dog. I did have a JRT make it's way into my backyard while i was at work in the past ( so my neighbour told me ) and my dog didn't do anything to it, so i'm unsure what happened this time.
  12. They're all beautiful. I love the oldies.
  13. Picked up a 2nd hand Hydrobath today. Love it, don't know why i didn't get one years ago. Twin tanks, heater, thermostat ect. Has a trolley too. Both dogs loved it.
  14. I am afraid I agree with Nekhbet's comment. There are some untrained dogs that will step up but in my experience such dogs are unsociable aggressive and virtually uncontrollable similar to the junk yard guard dog. Very few untrained family pets will step up and defend for real. Sure they bark and lunge and people back away and have provided a basic level of protection, but even a hard nerved guardian breed has to be trained to attack and bite. The more bites the dog experiences, the more wins the dog achieves, the more confidence the dog has to step up to the challenge which is how a protection dog is trained. There are plenty of dog savvy criminals who can unload an untrained dog and part of protection training is to counteract what the dog savvy criminals may do to the dog. IMHO, an untrained dog is a deterrent at a similar level as locks on a door, anything more serious required of the family pet will generally fail. Depends who you talk to. Everyone has a different opinion. I had a known RAAf trainer, with 30 yrs experience, come to my house to have a look at my problem dog ( Rottweiler ) and after a 20 min evaluation told me the dog was totally unsuitable for domestic and this is the dog you would want at your side to walk through the streets of Woodridge ( rough area )at midnight. He also said the dog would take down a person. I saw another trainer who was only interested in buying the dog from me after having him stay at his training facility for a week. Then i saw another trainer, who evaluated the dog and diagnosed the problem as fear aggression, which i believe was correct. I honestly don't know what my dog would do if someone attacked me.
  15. I get the freebies when you buy either Eukanuba or Hills. Just got another one on Sunday. A large storage bin from Hills.
  16. I have a 4wd with a canopy, but i still can't take the dogs out in the middle of summer. The canopy still gets too hot even with the windows open. A wagon with A/C is a good idea. Would be easier to get the dogs in and out too if they're a large breed.
  17. I can understand where this person is coming from. So many young people get dogs while in a relationship and then comes the break up, they head overseas, they change careers, housing/living requirements change or the novelty wears off. BUT In this case, the OP sounds like he/she is committed to the responsibility for the dogs life and it's not a snap decision.
  18. There's one of those FIDO tubs like i have for sale here on this forum. Only $70. good buy. Would've been a cheap option for a tub. ( Depending on the dogs size. I find it a bit small for my male Rottweiler. )
  19. I've been back and forth with the idea of buying a hydrobath for 6 months now and thought there were only two options until i checked Melbourne Dog Ctr. Melbourne Dog Ctr - $1725 for a single tank, heated bath. Barf Shop - $2499 for a twin tank, autofill, with trolley/wheels and a ramp - $2250 for a single tank, autofill, trolley/wheels Hydrobaths Australia - FIDO single tank, heated $1998. FIDO twin tank, heated, autofill ect. $2635 MDC do seem quite cheap. Makes me wonder about the quality that's all. I like the Barf Shop set up the best, but i don't like the dishonest info they've given me over the phone.
  20. Has anyone bought products from this company ? Are the products good quality and is the company good to deal with ?
  21. I'm 99% sure my friend has all her dogs insured and a few of those are breeding dogs.
  22. Does that happen with frozen bones too? I sometimes give my dogs frozen bones on hot days. Should I thaw it first? Mine have been given frozen bones daily, for nearly 10 years without a problem.
  23. If this person is walking the streets, carrying a big metal pole and screams at people, i'd say she almost needs to be reported. There's no place for a person to be walking the streets, carrying a weapon and screaming at people. Sounds like she may have some mental issue and in that case, shouldn't be out walking the streets on her own. In fact, i'm going to ask my mate who is in the QPS what would happen if this person was reported or if there's a law against a person walking the streets with a weapon and screaming at people. You've got your dog under control, you've backed up a driveway and have her on a leash and this woman still raises this pole and screams ?? What if a child is out walking a dog and she reacts the same way ?
