Thank you I will do. He is coping as good as he can. He has the pup to keep him busy but the pup is not Jakey. He said he is going to take the pup as high as he can as a legacy to Jake. ETA sorry for your loss of Odin.

Sorry, didnt meant to sound rude but read my thread in the general section on 'poison' Im in Huntingdale so I dont think the 2 are connected ;) Oh gosh, I just read that thread and I am so sorry I lost my last dog, a Malamute named Odin, to poison and it's so very traumatic. I am sorry for your loss  Do you also have a Border Collie? My son also has the BC. He bought it himself to do obedience with. He figured if he could get that far in obedience with a JRT, he could 'reach the stars' with a BC. He has already skipped beginners and gone to advanced beginners with the pup (on the advice of the trainer) oh! Ive just realised who you are.... Carolyns class??

Will_and_Jake_2008.doc Here they are in 2008

Never heard them described like that (by anyone else) but yes probably, they are quite well known up there, because of his age I think. He has just turned 13 and they went to pre trial this term. They only had 2 weeks together down there

No.. because most folks do not realise rats especially will travel quite a distance .. maybe several houses away ....and may die out in the open. Jakey has possibly been eating rats for a time... and the poison accumulated .. poor boy. Yea I suppose.... If he has been getting the rats, then as devastated as I am, I'm proud of him, he was doing what a Jack russell terrier should have been doing and I bet he loved every minute of it. Just realised though eeurgh, Jakey Boy!! , all them smoochy kisses ;)

Hi everyone thanks again. I found another dead rat behind the shed today so my guess is that someone, somewhere has got rat poison down Ive lived there for 5 years and never had a problem, now in the space of 6 days, 2 dead rats and our Jakey gone. It seems to coincidental for my liking. Would it have been polite to let us know he was using poison then we could choose whether to let the dog out??? Do people let you know if they are using stuff like that? I would have thought it common courtesy as there knows there are dogs in all the surrounding houses. The garden to the right of me is like a jungle, thats the side of our garden that we found Jakey on, also the rats. Thats the only surrounding neighbour without a dog.

Thank you everyone. We are not coping well but its early days. Day 5 and we're bursting into tears at any given moment. Hubby and Mstr 8 are very sad but coping ok and supporting us through it. Mstr 13 couldnt face school so he spent Monday and Tuesday with my parents and made and painted a cross with my dad for Jakeys grave. We have laminated photos together so Im sure it will be lovely when we have done it all. Mstr 13 went back to school today but it was hard for him, I took him and spoke with the chaplain and his fave teacher. They have given him a 'chill out card'. he can leave class and go for a chill out without explanation to anyone if he feels the need. I came back to work on Monday as I felt it would be better than sitting at home missing him, but its hard. Very hard. A little dog has left the biggest hole you can imagine

Thank you for your replies. Ill never know so I shoudn't torture myself. But we are human and I guess we are programmed to seek answers. ;) I cant talk about it now, but it is Jakey boy. In my signature

Ill reword this. The dog is dead. no signs or symptons except a dead rat 5 days later in the garden. Wont be a post mortem as vet charged $1000 which isnt feasible. So could the rat be the culprit? I dont expect anyone to know for sure but just wondering peoples thoughts. how likely is it?

If a healthy 3 yr old dog attacked / bit / played with a rat that had been poisoned, could this kill the dog?

Mine has free range, so usually I would leave him indoors. I have my mums dog staying over until this afternoon though and she is old and he keeps bothering her so she gets to stay in while he goes out. he has plenty of water and shade though

Thank you, it does seem to be more when he is on leash, he is fine off leash. I like the rescue remedy idea, where do I buy this? We do watch who we stand next to at agility and remove him if he shows any anxiety / aggression. ;) Can anyone recommend a good behavourist South of perth?

Start a new thread Joelle - that way you'll get a range of input!! But think of it this way - if your dog 'guards' you from others like it would guard a bone, how do you think your dog percieves you - as leader or possession? Thank you, ive started a new thread

Hi, my thread is prompted by a comment in another thread so I thought Id throw it out here for advice :D Our 3 yr old desexed JRT is a lovely little dog with no issues - bar one ;) He has always appeared to be protective of Mstr 12 (and at times me) but then since being attacked at training by 2 large x breed pups together he is more so. We think he may have triggered this attack, and we may have missed the cues, I think he may have been warning the dogs away form mstr 12 and they challenged him  We dont know this for sure but it would fit with his personality so Im open to accepting that. He now certainly does not like large dogs (adult or pup / teenager) near him, he will not stand in line at agility calmly, he appears to be on edge and anxious. Mstr 12 does agility and obedience and they work well together. he trains and treats him regularly. He is well mannered in the home, eg, sits before food, waits to be invited onto furniture and beds, (or, if he forgets, he will get down then wait to be invited ) he comes though the doors after us etc. Is there anything we can do to ease his anxiety around cetain dogs? And is it actually resource guarding his humans or is it a fear response? When the other dogs were here, he would sometimes sit up on the chair and growl if he didnt want them near him (or was it us?) . We always put him down immediately if he did this. He is a very sociable chap, loves coming to the kids sports and beach with us, it seems to be more around (certain) other dogs, his anxiety grows. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Our nearly 3 yr old JRT lives in a house of 2 kids, cat and there was other dogs here before too. Mstr 12 takes him for agility and obedience and the two are well bonded but he loves everyone in the family. he is a bit possesive and protective of mstr 12 especially around big strange dogs but I dont think thats the breed, I think thats his experiences of being attacked and stood on by big dogs , so I think its due to human error not bad breeding :D Ive heard the phrase before but he really is a big dog in a little body

Hi We go to K9 each Monday. My little fella does Agility at 7pm then obedience at 8pm with his JRT. He is at intermediate stage. So far he is very eager and ready to go each Monday. I get home at 6.30 and he is usually waiting for me, treats cut up, dog on leash, off we go :D He also does about 20 mins practice most evenings so Im very proud of him.

Thanks everyone, I emailed the club today to ask if they have one for our size. I though I was seeing things (or NOT) when I couldnt find one in BPG or CF! We have one shaped like a bone made of tennis ball material; but i'll wait for the real thing then we dont confuse the poor dog! Thanks everyone, most helpful

Thank you for the prompt replies. Do you know what days and times the K9 shop is open?

Ive looked in BP and G and CF but cannot find a small hard pastic dumbell like is used in the obedience comps. All I can find is the ones that squeak and kongs etc. Any ideas please? Its for a JRT so I wouild need the smallest I think:) Thank you
