  1. Hi Elfin, the only thing I could suggest is researching if anything happened to her prior to you getting her. 13 weeks old is time enough for a young pup to have had really bad experience that will leave a fear imprint, hopefully you can find out what it is and take measures to help?? What do you know about her early weeks? most pups are homed at 8 weeks, I wonder where she was from 8 - 13 weeks? Or is something maybe scaring her and waking her suddenly? sorry not much help - good luck
  2. them bloody cheeky staffies, wanting to kiss n sniff and sit on folk! cheek
  3. Similar but different, My JRT Jake, growled at Ellie over a ball the other day (8 kgs vs 40 kg and she backed off ) anyhow, I immediately shouted no, yanked him straight up and I put him straight into time out in the bathroom. I llet him out a few mins later and he was completely calm and submissive! I am their boss, I make decisions about who gets the ball, not an 8 kg ball of fur Where did I learn this? puppy school and DOL :D Id never have dreamt of time out for dogs ( i use it for kids ) but I can assure oyu it really does work - as long as it is immediate. Good luck.

    Just A Vent

good news, the breeder randomly rang this week, is coming to see pup next week mas part of their after sdale and continuing support of their pups (sounds sensible) . I saw him again y'day, seemed a bit better with him , although i 'played' and offered cheese to lure into sit and drop., (a sort of unplanned role modelling session lol). there is hope for the boy, and they do appear to love him to bits so
  7. yep much of the same here, plastic bottles, bought ropes, kongs etc. But their fave game, esp Ellies, my kids tell her to stay, then go and hide and she has to find them. it is so funny. she looooves that game.

I like this idea and it is achievable He is a gorgeous pup. big and healthy, beautiful shiny eyes and coat etc, appears to be well bred and by all accounts, he is from good stock, so Ill see what I can find out. Thanks,

I have informed them of all the local puppy schools and the invaluable info that I gained from them. I have purchased the Cesar Milan book for myself and told them about him, they say they watch him on TV so they know it.... What amazes me is that he is 50 odd now, has had lots of dogs, (not many lasted the full lifespan I might add, most were rehomed ) he has known this little one was coming for 18 months, has chosen the breeder, obviously said all the right things to the breeder to convince them that he knows at least the basics, one would assume? SO why not continue to do the right thing and take him to puppy school, crate him, just basically do the right thing Also, just as an extra, He is scared of my Ellie as he says she is "one of them pit bull things" Poor dog. I feel sorry for him, but also the baby who will not get to experience growing up with a lab as I did because I forsee trouble....!
  10. The deed is done, the pup is home, and needs extra nourishment and that post helps the OP exactly how...????
  11. Chicken necks and wings. tucker time also goes down well ! My JRT was small (ish) and I fed him ......(need help here) ....some kind of mince balls, they had mince, veg oats, honey, if anyone can remember the name or recipe (was it satin balls)? please post it because I found Jake loved them and they helped bulk him up.

Forgot to mention, he refused my offer of loaning a crate, "You dont put dogs in cages' I guess everyone has their opinion, but It hought it would be ideal taking into account the crawling, prob soon to be walking toddler in the home too...time out for both of them - hell i would even put the baby in there.................

hey all, just a whinge really..... my BIL purchased a labrador puppy a few weeks ago. They have waited 18 months for the litter so you would think theyve had plenty of time........ Took my kids down to see puppy the other day and they (adults) were encouraging the pup to chase and nip my 6 yr old, laughing and encouraging him to run more . My boy soon stopped when I reminded him of the etiquette around new puppies (stay calm, rewards calm behaviour eg) I think the adults thought I was a spoil sport!. Then the pup weed on the mat (duh..he had been playing!), BIL got the dog and promptly shouted and rubbed his nose in the puddle. I was mortified but he is adamant its the only way to teach a pup. i feel so sorry for the pup, BIL is the kind of person who 'knows best'. They have a 6 m old baby in the house and a 3 months old lab, I can see disaster with a toddler and energetic pup very soon.....Guess Id better be on hand when the poor dog has to be rehomed vent over.

    Snobby Pup!

He is being fed twice daily morning and night other than training days, when I feed once only. Forgot to add I also am using Tucker time mixed into his kibble, he loves tucker time but still not convinced to eat the kibble. I am thinking along the same lines, mix a tiny bit of junk food, good stuff (meaty bones etc), and extra tastes. On training nights he is spoiled and gets chicken, hot dogs, cheese ec, lots of etra yummy treats that he ONLY gets when he works for it. IS this the problem???? Refusing boring old kibble (That costs a small fortune because he is wondering wht he doesnt get chicke n cheese etc every night?? I was told to give these specially at training though. I dont mins the cost factor. As long as he is going to eat it. I dont want to keep trying different expensive brands just to waste money, although if he doesnt eat the advanc, they will refund I wonder if I could pick up some free samples anywhere??

    Snobby Pup!

Hi all, im after some suggestions pls......... Jake was on eukanuba and we have been through 2 bags of it but VERY slowly. We have had him for 3 months................He was having to be convinced to eat it, I thought a pup should eat immediately, how many times have we heard of puppies stuffing themselves whenver they get the opportunity..... not Jakey. Anyhow, I did the unthinkable and ran out of food so las t week got Lucky dog puppy................... He loved it.............. Off goes I to the pet food store, I explained to the guy that Jake doesnt like euk, yet loved the cheap stuff. He likened it to kids preferring Macdonalds to a veggie dish He recommended Advance, said most dogs love it, so much that they will refund if the dog doesnt like it. Does jake like it????? No. ANy ideas, shall I perserve? With the euk, I added variety, rice, sardines etc, but it was a struggle to get him to eat. he also gets chicken necks and raw meaty bones and loves these. His weight is growing steadily so I know he must be getting enough but he is sooooo slow, sometimes just ignores it, like tonight. BTW Jake is 22 weeks old JRT Should I give more bones and chicken and just tiny amounts of kibble?? (remember thought, he loved the cheap one and wolfed it down ;) )
  19. There is such a big difference across the board. Ellie was $250. she was 7 months and 30 kgs. (still immature) Jake will be $168. yet he is all of 4 kgs and immature??
  20. I agree with this too. I think it would be cruel to spend weeks full time with the pup if this is not what happens usually. I got mine on Friday lunch time but was back to work on the Monday, maybe Tuesday I think, Im not sure I seem to recall being 'ill' and getting to spend the monday with the pup all by myself after a family weekend......hee hee. we are looking at getting another JRT towards the end of the year and I will prob arrange to get 'her' on FRiday midday and have mon off again
  21. I've seen young children try to "teach" puppies and it just doesn't work! Maybe the children that you hav seen teach puppies didnt work, however some children can do it. My son is teaching our dog and their trainers say they are both doing fantastic. I personally feel it depends on a lot. The age, breed, temperament and drive of the dog. and..............The age, breed temperament and drive of the child SOme children I agree would make awful trainers, they are not focussed enough or do not understand the dogs way of thinking. My 10 yr old did puppy school, does agility and obedience with his pup and is fully switched onto the dogs needs, drive, mind matter eg. He knows when to have a break, when to play, changes treats, goes back to basics if he thinks he has moved too fast. His pup is his hobby, his mate, his constant companion and I have no doubt that he and only he brings out the best in that dog. He wouldnt be as good as an adult I would prob agree, but he is doing a fantastic job and I feel confident that I am helping the future of animals with a boy like mine. He'll will prob go through life with a dog by hi side constantly and the dogs can only benefit form that as he gets older. He has asked me for a Border Collie next but I have said he will have to wait until he is older as I feel that they are particularly intelligent dogs with far too high needs for me or him at the moment. One day he will get his BC

    Asher

Run free you beautiful boy RIP Asher. Bella, Asher looks a stunning dog, I am so sorry for your loss. Treasure the memories.
  23. Our dogs arent allowed to even do the 4 inch jumps just step through ladders etc, on the wobbling board, absolutley NO jumping at all. Its a puppy foundation class. Gets them used to the basic idea of agility. I was talking to a lady whose JRT is ready to start competition but has to wait until June when he will be 18 months so its all perfectlysafe and puppy focussed.
  24. Can I share my pride n joy with you here?? My 10 yr old son (and now 10 yr old niece too) have started taking their JRT pups to agility and they love it. The pleasure they get from their dogs is amazing to see. Where they go the dogs go. They practice through the week "most " days, They get prepared for the training, chop own treats, get crate, toys etc ready and are waiting to leave 30 mins before we are due To watch the concentration on a 10 yr olds face watching his puppy and reading the signals is fantastic. To watch the puppy watch his 10 yr old owner's every move is even better. The pride on my boys face when he and his pup got a move right after a couple of attempts - brilliant Watching my boys pride when the pup did a perfect recall - lost for words At the end of training, doing a last recall, to watch an 18 week old pup sprint to his 10 yr old master and hurl himself into arms that are bent down waiting for him and cover him with kisses (both of them ) UTTERLY PRICELESS - brought a tear of happiness and pride to my eyes let me tell you. Heres to what I hope to be a very long and fulfilling friendship between a boy and his dog. Thank you to the agility club WA for including my boy and taking the time to make him feel a valued part of your club. He has only been joined for 4 weeks but he feels very much a part of the club already.
