  1. Capital Grooming (in Chifley) are THE BEST!!! I have been taking my dogs to them for about 12 years now....... Caroline no longer owns the business - but the ladies that work there are wonderful... They are not cheap for grooming - but the extra expense is MORE than worth it..... The little coffee shop next door is also recommended!!! :D :D
  2. :coffee: phew so pleased all is well now I felt the same way after the grape episode
  3. I know how you feel My doggie did this about 1 month ago now.... Turns out I had fed her GRAPES ;) without realising they were incredibly :D toxic for doggies. Could it have been something like that??? Sally threw up about 8 times - white and frothy mostly, then occasionally it was yellow - I guessed that was bile. She was very quiet that day and night but was okay the next day.... ;) If in doubt - ring Vet for sure. MMM - maybe she found the hidden Easter egg stash??? Take care
  4. Excellent - exactly what I have been wondering about.... Well its a few days down the track and Sally is mobile again - very quiet and not running. Just trots around. We have fenced in the yard with chicken wire so she only has a small area to be in. Lucy HATES IT :D Vet checked her on Saturday and said all was going well. She goes back again this Friday. My hubby took her on Saturday and forgot to ask how much weight she needed to lose. Not to worry I will check on Friday. Yes, meanwhile I have reduced her intake by half and am adding some ground veges and stuff. Meanwhile I have been doing lots of reading on Net and fully appreciate what everyone has said on this thread - basically that there is MUCH more to it than just brisket bones and a couple of other things.... I have kept this thread bookmarked - so will let you all know how things go with the cruciate ligament and the diet. Thank you all EVER so much.................. :D Debbie, Sally ;) and Lucy As promised an update!!! Since I originally posted Sally has lost .7kg!! The mainly raw diet continues..... I have a chopper and in varying mixes I add carrot, pumpkin, beetroot, beans, a little low-fat natural yoghurt, a little olive oil, egg, swede zucchini. No fruit as yet... So basically, depending on what I have in fridge - I do a mix. Lasts Sally and Lucy probably 4 days. I add some REALLY lean mince (beef at the moment). I will venture into kangaroo (just noticed our supermarket sells it minus any preservatives). The veggie mix ends up being MOSTLY vegies with a little mince through it. Every now and then I give them a chicken wing each and thats it. Also every now and then I give them a small tin of sardines between them and just the vegies. Questions: Shredded coconut? Thoughts on that? They love it - but realise it might be too fattening at the moment while Sally is dieting?? Olive oil ok? :D I don't add much of that - just a trickle really... Lucy the Cav's coat is as SHINY as!! Sally is full of beans - they both are :D As someone suggested I asked the Vet how much weight he wanted Sally to lose. He wouldn't give me a kg amount. Just said he didn't want to feel all the 'fat' padding around her ribs!! He did say that he only wanted her to have a palmful of food per day. For Lucy he said slightly less. (Lucy is a two year old Cav but is tiny as she was the litter 'runt'.) Oh yes - almost forgot!! Sally finally got the bandage off her leg last Thursday. The wound is healing beautifully. Vet is very pleased but wants her to stay confined for another month. (We had to 'fence' her in out back with chicken wire etc. He doesn't want her running around like a mad thing. Well yes - this all went well in the first couple of weeks while she was recovering - but now she has all this new-found energy she HATES being in jail!! :D As before I am ever so grateful to all of you and please do not hesitate to give me new ideas or point me in the direction of other threads on this forum where I might get ideas.... Debbie, Sally :D and Lucy :D
  5. Coles - oh awesome I will visit on weekend!! Many thanks Debbie
  6. Any Canberra doggie lovers out there???? If so, would be keen to know where you purchase kangaroo meat here - no preservatives . Doesn't have to be mince, as I can mince it myself Cheers Debbie Thanks in advance

  8. Oh thanks you heaps for your replies - much much appreciated. Sally has ALWAYS been rather rotund...... No, the Vet didn't give an idea of how much weight she needs to lose but I do have to take her back on Saturday for him to check the wound etc. OMG she seems to have a cut from her little ankle right up to the top of her thigh!! All hidden of course under bandages....She hasn't moved much but I guess that is normal after such a big operation and loads of pankillers etc. I will ask Vet on Saturday to calculate her ideal weight. I have more of an idea what do do now - again, thanks. I was just wondering about the quantity but I guess I will work that out eventually ``Debbie~~
  9. have been reading about the BARF and variations... My questions is: Is the variations and other recipes mentioned okay for an OBESE doggie? My 9yo Sally girl (Cairn terrier x pekingese) has just had an operation today to fix her cruciate ligament.... Vet said that the weight HAD to come off... We have been reducing her intake anyway (kibble and raw meat) - but yes - I now know it is time to go the all natural way and do the right thing by her (and my little Cav) Thanks in advance everyone ~~Debbie~~~
  10. :D :D has cracked me up!!! no pun intended :D :D Seriously (had to stop laughing first) I give my doggies (Cav and a cairn/peke cross) an egg each about once a week. I just moosh it over their dry food for a change and they love it!!! Also once a week I give them a small tin each of home brand / black and gold sardines and jelly - the cat food . I read somewhere a long time ago that the oils / Omega 3s were good for their coat and skin. Debbie
  11. :D :D has cracked me up!!! no pun intended :D
  12. Hi - I live in McKellar and have recently taken my doggies for the first time to the Grooming Salon in Macquarie - unsure of their name but easy to find in Yellow Pages. I was very disappointed with the work they did on my small Cav:mad - but pleased with the work they did on my cairn terrier x pekingnese. I was charged $45 and $55 respectively. For years and years I had been taking my doggies to Capital Grooming in Chifley. Expensive but outstandingly and WONDERFULLY good. I started going there about 10 years ago when I had a Bedlington Terrier and the then owner was the only person in Canberra who knew how to clip one without the end results being a bedlington that looked like a poodle!!!! Sadly my Bedlington passed away last November which is why I though I would try Macquarie as it is closer to home. Cheers Debbie
  13. Oh! poor puppy..... I have been watching this thread since you first posted. It does sound like you are getting some wonderful advice so I am very pleased for you. Good luck and lots and lots of cuddles for you both!!!
  14. Poor Mummy dog - poor YOU. Will follow this thread and think of you every inch of way. Fingers crossed Take care Debbie
  15. Hi everyone Found this thread while snooping around looking for brekkie ideas for my doggies. I have been giving them weetbix and a little milk but figure thats maybe not such a good idea??? Thoughts?? Also while snooping on the forum I found a great thread about feeding dogs a bigger meal in the mornings rather than at night. GOSH I was always of the belief that doggies only needed ONE meal a day! :D I have a cairn terrier / cross pekingnese (Sally) - she is 9yo and tends to be / well IS rather 'rotund'. I also have a 17month old female Cav (Lucy). She is tiny - about the size of a 6 month puppy (litter runt). I only got her in February and thats when the breakfast thing started - (when I got her she had come from a home that always gave brekky to their Cavs.) Well - when I started giving Lucy weetbix n milk I felt so sorry for Sally (as you do) and started giving her a tiny bit as well. Lucy gets about 3/4 of a weetbix and Sally gets the other quarter. So, are weetbix and milk a bad idea? Would Porridge be better? What about the milk? I have tried giving them weetbix n water and neither will eat it. Lucy will NOT eat straight weetibix :D but Sally will! Sheesh! OR, should I just rethink the whole thing - based on Sally's fatitude and think about giving them a bigger meal in the morning and just a meaty bone or something for dinner? I work so sadly, they don't get walked much..... Debbie
  16. No - but I had a doggie awhile ago that had something else and needed to provide a sample - so they can test it for infection!!!! The vet will probably request this (just like us female humans who get cystitis / urinary tract infections!!!) Such JOY to do with a doggie ;) - first find a container - a chinese-type takeaway dish is ideal. Wash with soapy water and rinse and dry well. Next is the fun part - follow doggie around and when they start to squat (gotta be quick!!!!)- try to get the dish underneath their 'bottie' to catch as much as you can. The vet doesn't need much - just a GOOD amount of drops will do - (doesn't have to be cupfuls!!!). Ah em - the doggie will hate it - they keep thinking "YOH - I am trying to PEE here! Why the hell are you trying to shove THAT underneath me...." I am a newbie on these forums - so do snoop around - I am sure you will find more hints and tips on getting a urine sample. ( I remember walking around the block at 6.30 in morning with my doggie!! I was dressed in the fair-dinkum pink dressing gown and fluffy slippers!!!. Thought it would happen really quickly but doggie did not WANT to oblige and took us over half an hour!!!! Good luck - keep smiling - I am sure all will be well. :D
