  1. I have had great success with a dog who would rather stave than eat something he does not want by feeding him Ox cheek, not only does he love it but it has made him rediscover a taste for food again. Hamish left home at 4/5 months and was returned at 15 mths - he is now 17 months old and eating pretty well. He was a real challenge the usual things that would make any dog slobber and do back flips did nothing for him - he would rather go without. He won't even eat chicken. He loves ox check and lamb necks/off cuts and would happily live on that. He will eat Barf but only if he thinks that is all he is getting. If I give him bones he would eat that first and often leave the rest, but he will always eat the ox cheek. His training did not include food (not a bad thing) but since using food with training it has increased his desire for food. He now has value for food - when he came home he had very little value where food is concerned - very unusual for one of my dogs. They are all "foodies". He ate RC with his previous owner but will leave it here. eta : sorry not a herb - but it works.
  2. Frightening hey http://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au/articl...58911_news.html The old saying comes to mind here - "If you build it - they will come" How many of these places will follow...
  3. Take it to your local MP - that seriously sucks.
  4. Their message is getting out - I know of a person who returned their purebred pug pup (not one of mine) because the vet (RSPCA VET at an animal shelter) said it was so unhealthy it should be pts on the spot - contacted breeder and the pug was taken to the breders vet - pug is perfectly healthy. Ran it on for another month and has since been sold - for a pup that was so unhealthy that it should be dead it can run and play like any other pup and cleared by the breeders vet. New owners would not believe the other vet so decided to return the purebred pug pup and was refunded the $1100 purchase price......following week she purchases a Maltese X Cavie (insert stupid ripoff DD name here) for a "bargain" price of $1200 from the pet shop....well F*** me - tell me how that is going to be any better off....
  5. I picked up a tunnel the other day, size is great but it is different to everything else I have seen. Instead of being fully covered with the same fabric - the lower half is blue and the top half is mesh and clear plastic. It looks strong but the real test will be how long it lasts. Thought if nothing else it would be a good beginner tunnel. When I first saw it they wanted $180, but he wasn't sure on price told them to forget it as I can get get one better and cheaper than that. He then said he would do me a favor and let me have it for $120 as I waited for about 15 mins for someone to call him back with the price of it. Told him no - can still get one better than that. Next day I went back in and asked a different person what the price on the tunnel was "today" - told her that the man yesterday had no idea. Still no price on the tunnel so she called someone - said it was $99, so told her no thanks. As I was leaving she asked me if I was really interested and I said yes but not at that price. She asked me what about $70 then. I told her I will think about it. Wondered around the shop for a few mins and thought by the time I add postage to the one from Air Dog I would still be looking at around $150 - even though this is not as good, at $70 it wasn't so bad, the fabric is strong but the mesh and plastic is what I was not sure about - but as a beginner it should be ok as it has air flow and can see through it. Now I just need to remind my young Rottie bitch about all the fun she had with the tunnel when she was a baby. Next project is to make some jumps..
  6. oops sorry should have checked.

    Peta

Or to form a more balanced perspective try the PETA website. You'll find quotes such as "There's no such thing as a responsible breeder." Meaning, rescue, don't buy from a breeder. Is that what PETA says, or what you say? Poodlemum - this was posted on another list ... More from PETA: Animal Rights Uncompromised: There's No Such Thing as a 'Responsible Breeder' Most people know to avoid puppy mills and "backyard" breeders. But many kind individuals fall prey to the picket-fence appeal of so-called "responsible" breeders and fail to recognize that no matter how kindly a breeder treats his or her animals, as long as dogs and cats are dying in animal shelters and pounds because of a lack of homes, no breeding can be considered responsible." All breeders fuel the companion animal overpopulation crisis, and every time someone purchases a puppy or a kitten instead of adopting from an animal shelter, homeless animals lose their chance of finding a home—and will be euthanized. Many breeders don't require every puppy or kitten to be spayed or neutered prior to purchase, so the animals they sell can soon have litters of their own, creating even more animals to fill homes that could have gone to shelter animals—or who will end up in animal shelters or so-called "no-kill" animal warehouses themselves. Simply put, for every puppy or kitten who is deliberately produced by any breeder, a shelter animal dies. Producing animals for sale is a greedy and callous business in a world where there is a critical and chronic shortage of good homes for dogs, cats, and other animals, and the only "responsible breeders" are ones who, upon learning about their contribution to the overpopulation crisis, spay or neuter their animals, and get out of the business altogether. Breeding Trouble Producing more animals—either to make money or to obtain a certain "look" or characteristic—is also harmful to the animals who are produced by breeding. Dogs and cats don't care whether their physical appearance conforms to a judge's standards, yet they are the ones who suffer the consequences of humans' manipulation. Inbreeding causes painful and life-threatening genetic defects in "purebred" dogs and cats, including crippling hip dysplasia, blindness, deafness, heart defects, skin problems, and epilepsy. Distorting animals for specific physical features also causes severe health problems. The short, pushed-up noses of bulldogs and pugs, for example, can make exercise and even normal breathing difficult for these animals. Dachshunds' long spinal columns often cause back problems, including disk disease. Adoption: The Only Compassionate Option There is no excuse for breeding or for supporting breeders. If you love animals and are ready to care for a cat or a dog for the rest of the animal s life, please adopt from your local animal shelter, where there are dogs and cats galore—tails wagging and hearts filled with hope, looking out through the cage bars, just waiting to find someone to love. Shelters receive new animals every day, so if you don't find the perfect companion to match your lifestyle on your first visit, keep checking back. When you find your new best friend, you'll be glad that you chose to save a life—and made a new best friend as well. If you know anyone who is considering purchasing an animal instead of adopting from a shelter, please forward this article to them, and please consider making a donation today to support PETA's vital work to save lives.
  9. Fair enough - if she looks like she has a little secret in a few weeks the offer is there for what ever you need. All my girls phantom - weight gain - milk and all, perhaps Jett is doing the same.
  10. Trina - Do you know if Bandit actually mated with Jett? Lizzy had an ultrasound at 6 weeks with her 1st mating - no puppies, she gained weight and looked very preggers - no puppies. Maybe just wait it out and if she has a little surprise for you, if so sing out - I can be around with everything you need in a few minutes. Piper had a funny season this time too - was very different. Hamish was interested in her from day 6 - 10 then nothing - she even stopped bleeding. I know there is no hope of an accident as he does not run with the girls and was not near her while she was in season. Good luck.
  11. Well done Willow - you did the right thing, no doubts at all. As for taking in dogs that will end up at the pound - I did that once, and I would not do it again. The dog I took in was an elderly SWF and luckily for me he was a very nice little dog. One other time I did tell a friend about another SWF who was heading to the pound - big mistake....that dog was a nasty bastard and had bitten 5 people in 3 days (one was my daughter totally unprovoked). She was prepared to wait and see if he was going to settle in but I did trick her in to taking the dog to the pound telling her that they would rehome him - I told her to be honest how she got him and what has happened in the days that she had him. He was PTS on the spot. She was upset and had she known that they would PTS she said she would not have taken him there - it was about a week before she spoke to me again - she knew it was for the best as each attack got worse. I contacted the previous owner and told them what had happened after the 1st attack and asked them to take him back - not friggen likely - then I was told the TRUTH about why they "got rid of him" (WORDS I HATE BEING SAID ABOUT ANIMALS). I have been grooming dogs for over 7 yrs and every now and then I get asked if I can find a new home for their dog - I have been asked to take them in too since I like dogs so much. I am not in a position to do it and I get pissed off when being asked to. I send them to the pound and advise the NOT to get another dog for a very long time. You would be amazed how many of those ***** then go on to tell me that they have already told the kids that they can have another dog in a few months when things are different...... TWO SWF's come to mind just now - they were getting kicked out because they were building a new deck and doing up the back yard and they didn't want the dogs pissing on the new deck... ;) So would I take in another dog on the spot because of some irresponsible twit - NO BLOODY WAY... Sending them to the pound is the best thing to do.... I have one of my pups back now - 16mth old entire male Rottweiler because of an illness in the family....I will always have one I bred back - but will not take on someone else's problems... People need to face up to their own responsibilities and not expect to dump it on to some other poor bastard who happens to be close by.. *rant over*
  12. Cockerlover made a belly band for Hamish (16mo entire male Rottweiler) he lived outside in his previous home - he is only inside on lead with all eyes on him as he will cock his leg if given a chance. He left here at 5 mo and he showed no respect for the house or his bed for that matter. I have toilet trained a few dogs now with minimal effort required but this boy is doing my head in. This dog will piss on everything including his own bed - he is what I call a "dirty dog". He is a happy go lucky boy who need reigning in now as he has pretty much had it all his own way for too long. Luckily for me he has the most wonderful nature, if he didn't cock his leg he would be perfect to live with. Living with 3 bitches I am sure he is marking "his" territory now so will take more effort that I am prepared to put in right now so a belly band has been good for us. He has never worn one before and has tried to remove it - a quick "aahhh" is all that has been needed for him to leave it alone.
  13. they must have been confused - bet they meant to say 3 months
  14. Anne I agree with this. I do not care if my dogs are returned to me - but I do care about the way they have been treated. As long as they have been well care for and loved and if/when things change and they are no longer able to keep the dogs then I want them back. So far I have had 2 Rottweilers come back home - one is here now. I would rather find a new home than all concerned not being happy. Everything can work out good as long as it is handled properly. eta: just to clear any possible misunderstanding - regardless of the way they have been treated I want them back. I will put in the time and effort required to rehome them or I would pts myself. But I would not want one of my dogs become pound fodder. I have always said if I can not trust my dogs with my family then I would not put them in someone elses family.
  15. This seems like a good idea, you can explain how to crate train the pup and this is something that they can continue with for the life of the pup. I can not believe that so many on here are expecting RL to fork out $1000 - stuffed if I would pay anything if my dogs were not responsible. The fence was paid for by RL - was a free fence for the neighbours - far more than what most people would have done to begin with. That fence is dog proof, was unfortunate that the new puppy owner didn't puppy proof the fence from their side. This was an accident - an expensive accident and should be seen as such.
  16. a friend has one and it is fantastic.
  17. Are you still taking orders for these - if so I would like to get a few of them in small, medium and large.
  18. Bugger - looks like we will have to tough it out then. Was hoping for a magic wand.... ellz - what is chlorophyll? *goes off to google*
  19. Any one recommend a spray or something to take the pressure off a male while bitches are in season?
  20. I love the dry bedding - fantastic stuff. Don't worry too much about the price of it, not only will it last for years but because it makes life so much easier when you have puppies. Looks neat, washes easy and drys fast - ready for use again and it is so nice and comfortable in and out of the whelping box. After having the Rottweiler litters it was nice setting up for Lizzy (Pug). When I bought her 2 new pieces I got 4 whelping box size pieces and off cuts that are used for bedding and a piece I use for polishing their coats with grooming sprays - that saved me buying a grooming mitt for $28. I also use an off cut piece on the baby scales, when they are on the scales they settle quicker because its the same fabric that is in their whelping box. Trina - go to the Berwick Market - I think it is the Perperone people. Same prices as the website that was posted earlier - here it is again if you missed it. http://www.peperonepetsupplies.com/ I found it easier to get a piece here and there - luckily for me I don't have to worry about postage. A while a go I looked after a friends litter for 2 weeks while they were away - she brought her own bedding and I never bothered with it - I couldn't be bothered actually. I have seen all the mucking around that she does and have tried to convince her to get dry bedding but she is happy with her way. I know what I am getting her for her birthday. Maybe you could request a couple of pieces of dry bedding for Birthday or Christmas pressies - I would be happy with that.
  21. Just call them and tell them your details. I lost my pack and had no idea of my reg number - they told me over the phone and it was all sorted out fast. A few days later I found it in a back pack that I later remembered putting it in so I didn't lose it.
  22. Shell I have heaps of carpet here that your welcome to - it was from a friend when they re did their floors. I use it for the same reason that you need it.
