  1. Why all the threads on crossbreeding?
  2. This sounds lots of alarm bells for me too. Sounds like he wants to use the papers somehow. Yes - people pay pedigree prices for dogs with PHOTO COPY of papers - who's papers - who knows. (This was before microchipping came in - but if the chips were not listed on the papers at time of printing them then any number can be added or just left blank) But when I asked to see their original papers they told me this is what they got. Shonky to say the least. This is the only reason I can think of if someone is only interested in the papers once a dog is dead. (I still have the papers to a pup we pts at 8 weeks old - when I called the VCA they told me I could throw them out if I wanted to - maybe this has since changed.)
  3. I don't advertise in the TP - don't have a need to. However I would like to see more breeder advertising along side the byb. We all know that a lot of people buy on the "NOW" - see it now - want it now. Not saying I agree with it but that is what happens. If someone is in the market for a pet and can see the pups advertised by both a byb offering sweet F/A with pups who just don't look that good anyway with pups from registered breeders who are saying what they are offering along with their beautiful puppy - it has to make people think. Lets face it - people will start to ask Q's if they see reg pups the same price or more often than not, much cheaper than UNregistered pups from BYBers. I think it will make the byb reduce their prices if the registered breeder starts taking over their cheap public exposure that is in the Trading Post. By not advertising in it we are giving them the cheap exposure they are counting on. Lets face it - many byb will proudly announce that their dogs are from champion bloodlines but no papers, this gives people a fast way to be educated on just what that means. Just because a dog has come from registered parents that does not make the pups registered unless they are from registered breeders. It might also expose those registered breeders who are selling puppies WITHOUT papers too. If people are seeing what registered means and what pedigree papers are really all about then there will be less confusion on what a registered dog and puppies really are. How many times do we see people talking about their Xbred having "papers", they often think that "papers" are the vet vaccination certificate and a print out from the PC. I have people come for grooming with all sorts of oodles and they are convinced they have papers, I will point to the bird cage and tell them to wait a minute and I will go print out some pedigree papers for them - it is that easy. Unless they are printed on the official registration paperwork from the registered club the animals are registered with it is only suitable to line their cage instead.
  4. I love getting calls and emails - especially photos. Just got 4 pics yesterday of one of my pug puppies who is in Tassie. I am friends with a few of the pet owners on facebook so stay in touch with them. Actually FB has been good, it's not like we are living each others lives and it is a much easier way of watching the pups develop without asking for photos. I wasn't sure how that would go but has been great. One lady contacted me through facebook to become friends because she is interested in one of my dogs, this has worked out great as we are really getting to know each other. What a disappointment that they have not been in contact with you - hopefully you will hear back from your breeder soon. maybe just send another pic and a few lines on how she is going and leave it at that, at least you have tried. I know how your feeling because I went through the same with Lizzy's breeder, regular emails and pics but gave up after about 10 months with no reply, so gave up on her. Piper's breeder and I have become good friends, I would be lost without her.
  5. It doesn't really bother me which order contact comes in but I do like to have their emails in front of me while sorting out enquiries, it can be hard remembering who and what you have spoken about and harder still if some have the same or similar names.
  6. Thanks Sway - we all needed to read something positive, lets all hope Jed continues to improve.
  7. Not just a thought Harminee - but a really good one. Fingers crossed if this is possible it can draw him from his hiding spot.
  8. Just bumping this bit - lets all hope for a miracle the missing cocker is Magnus and he is found safe real soon.
  9. Logged on a few hours ago and still don't know what to post. Jed wishing you and yours a speedy recovery. Rip poor dogs who didn't make it.
  10. Drive - I would much rather a 9 hr trip in the car with dogs than kids any day. Much more relaxing and no - "are we there yet" - how much loner" - "this is boring" every few miles. Your dog will happily fall asleep for most of it. Toilet brakes are easier too. Enjoy your drive. Many yrs ago I went for a drive for something to do - went to the QLD border - had a coffee and turned around and went home again - I was living in Euroa, Vic at the time and took my Dobermann with me. Pulled over for rests when needed and slept soundly with her beside me, stopped at the truck stops and had a great trip. That was the longest trip I did with a dog just for the fun of it, did a few others but mostly within Vic and NSW. Gone are those days, the price of fuel it's not worth it.
  11. Poor old pets - how can some people love them less when they need you more...
  12. Brisket bones and ox cheek will put weight on fast if fed daily. Any Lamb cuts will increase weight, feed extra if you need to. I "had" a fussy eater here - he was returned a few months back and was very fussy. 3 months on he will eat what ever I give him, has not been easy but he looks great now. He was fed RC for the 12 months he was gone and now he will not touch it - he thrives back on a raw diet.
  13. I would not be at all happy either if I was the OP - for several reasons - but as I said above - if there are no other litters involved in the contract (which there are not) then there is nothing that can be done about it now. Not something you would think about before signing a contract, you would naturally "assume" the breeder would keep the bitch with them. It's things like this that makes "breeder terms" a rude word. While it may be consider safe to transport bitches in whelp - I know of a couple of bitches who lost litters in the last week or 2 from travelling - not for whelping but on family holidays. My own girl went 6 days premature for no obvious reasons at the time - I would not be happy with my girls being taken anywhere that close to whelping. I would also be worried if a contract stated X amount of live puppies and the bitch lost some at whelping or during transport - would that mean they would expect the bitch back for another litter?
  14. Since it is over and done with there is nothing more you can do now - unless there is another litter involved in the contract.
  15. The only time I have had puppies looking for a feed from the bedding was when the bitch had mastitis and the pups were getting hungry - once I took over with their feeds they stopped looking for it elsewhere. The pepperone people (very helpful by the way) told me that they don't recommend the rubber back bedding for whelping and while the puppies are very small because of the extra wear and tear on the bedding, washing with hot water and the heating from the boxes will lessen the life of the rubber backing. The Green backed bedding is better for extra washing with hot water and the heating from the box or heat pads. I still use it in the box because I like the pretty colors (better selection with rubber backed) but used towels and paper to protect the rubber backing. It is lovely, snuggly and warm, the puppies love it. If I wreck them due to not using them as advised that is my fault not their. If you have a bitch who scratches at the bedding then it will wreck the rubber backing - Lizzy did this - the little shit kept turning it over when I was using it as bedding on the tiles so she could scratch the crap out of it - think she liked watching the little white stuff flying around while she was having a ball. I had a heated whelping box for Piper and used it with both her litters. Got an oder for an unheated box that was bigger and has higher sides than hers that was not picked up so I sold the heated box. Worked out better for me cause it has wheels on the end, moving it around is so much easier too, it's better made and heavier to go with it. I found the heated box even on low was too warm for her to be really comfortable. I have 2 heat pads and an over head heat lamp so not worried about keeping pups warm in the unheated box - house also has central heating. Lizzy has an unheated box that I had made up for her - worked out great. Kept a heat pad to one side so she could get away from the heating as she wanted. Also used the heat lamp but didn't need it much. If we didn't whelp or raise puppies inside the house with us then I would have kept the heated box - as they are inside with us it is much easier keeping everyone warm and snug. Having used both - heated and unheated whelping boxes - it is not hard keeping them warm and snug. One or two heat pads (depends on size of box) and an over head heat lamp with vet bed worked great for us.
  16. I have 3 entire bitches who run together- 2 Rottweilers and 1 pug. Best advise I can give is to make sure you have runs set up for when you need them. Some dogs will always get along but others just won't. When your not home to supervise them then keep them apart - easiest and safest option for all. My 3 girls spend day/night together - the only time they are apart is meal time or sometimes if I am going out. They eat treats together and share from one bowl - but when bones are on the menu (daily here) then it's best for all that they are on their own. If I wanted to change this I am sure I could work on it - but to me there is no need - separate runs for bones and all are safe. It was not always as easy as it is now - the young rottie bitch has taken a bit of "breaking in" by Lizzy (pug). They all know the house rules and must stick with them or they could not live together as well as they do. She has gone through the challenging stage trying to dominate her mother - but I am on that at the first sign of trouble and she is made aware that it is not on. Most of the time when I am going out all 3 girls remain together - sometimes the young bitch will be locked up. I have the son/brother (entire) of the girls here now and if he was staying I would be running them together - he can run with Lizzy and is great with other dogs. I am sure with a bit of effort he could be one of the pack again, when all are inside there is only a baby gate separating him from them - if they wanted to have a go at each other the gate would be useless. Good luck.
  17. It works - just takes a few minutes... Have seen this before - very sad reality. Horrible job.
  18. That is very expensive - I would not be happy with it either. Last year I had a 40 kg Rottie bitch spayed and she had a scar lump on her elbow removed at the same time - not sure on the exact amount but think it was under $350 - but they did say they under quoted me and I was lucky I didn't have to pay the full amt - saved about $100. Must say though I was very impressed with the size of the incision - was only about 3 or 4 stitches and the scar lump removed from her elbow was about 4 or 5 stitches.
  19. No - she had to know the lead was not attached - she was holding her hand out so I could see it was not attached to the dog sort of pointing in the direction she wanted to dog to go - she must have known. I am "guessing" she knew too by the way she was watching the dog - almost expecting him to dart towards the car - it was more her reaction that caught my eye to make sure I could stop as soon as possible which was why I was crawling along. I used to have a 3.5 kg Maltese and it was a habit to check that he was still there because he weighed so little it often felt like I had a lead and no dog.
  20. It's sad when driving a car that you have to not only anticipate the actions of other drivers but also everyone around that could cause an accident. Many years ago when I was living in Shepparton - I had my daughter and 2 small nieces with me, mum and sisters and more small kids were in 2 other cars all travelling together. They were ahead of me on a busy road. Out of no where a small Jack Russel ran out on the road and I had no where to go. I will never forget that horrible feeling which is why I am so careful when driving and I see dogs (on lead or not I still look). The owners kids had gone over the road to play cricket and the dog followed them - owner was calling the dog back - why - cause he was a dick... By the time I saw the dog it was too late - I hit him, I found a spot to pull over and went back to see if he needed to go to the vet. Poor little bugger didn't look good and died soon after. Mum and my sister came back to see what was going on - more concerned that the owner would blame me - he knew he was in the wrong and accepted that - about then I blasted at him - why did you call the dog over the road - what was I supposed to do...I was very shaken and upset - went over it several times in my head. Had I swerved or stopped sooner I would have caused a bigger accident - there were cars everywhere. People have to accept responsibility for their stupidity - dog pays the highest price often with their lives but the poor bugger who hits the dogs in their cars have little time to avoid it and it does affect you - that feeling will stay with me forever.

  23. I was driving through the Bunnings car park in Dandenong this morning, a very well dressed older woman (but not elderly) was walking her little Chiuahuha. Her dog was on one one side and a shopping cart on the other. It looked like the dog was on lead as she had it dangling in her hand - it wasn't until I was closer I could see properly. The dog seemed pretty nervous as my car was coming near (only a few meters away) as I got closer it darted towards the wheels. I was only crawling along as I had a feeling the lead didn't look like it was actually connected and it wasn't. As I stopped - which made the other cars stop too - she quickly grabbed the little dog and in the middle of the traffic she decided then it was a good idea to clip it on to the lead. She looked as stupid as she must have felt - no idea why the dog wasn't on lead - she had the lead in her hand and from a distance it looked like it was in use. She gave me a funny smile and waved thanks - I wasn't going fast - only crawling along because I wasn't sure about the dog but that poor little dog could have easily been under the wheels of my car or the car behind me. It was obvious that the dog was nervous around the cars so why he heck was it not attached to the lead that she had in her hand. When will people learn it is just not worth risking their dogs life - it was in a car park for goodness sakes - this Bunnings store in on the Princess Hwy.... *rant over....
