  1. MMmm......I am not going to help here but.... all my dogs, from pups have been allowed on the furniture... why? because I wanted them to! And the leadership thing has never been an issue.........even when I had the rotti. But that said......off means off, and they get off when I say so.
  2. all my dogs, past and present have loved a slurp of milk without sideeffects. have found a bit of warm milk given to a puppy has the same effect at bed time as it does for me........makes for a good sleep (but an early rise for puddles)
  3. about 28 years ago I used stockgain on my GSD...... he lost weight suddenly and the vet couldn't find a reason! As well as being a multivitamin it also is an appetite stimulant. ideal if trying to get weight back on a recovering animal.....and brings their coats up super shiny... p.s makes horses coats super shiny too and was always used when showing!
  4. Not really helpful...... but my bc waves his tail up like a flag and I love it......he looks so happy!!! He only ever holds it down when stalking something......like sheep!
  5. Hi Guys......... Congratulations to all the beautiful Aussies....... Since I am Aussie hunting for myself just thought I would hang out here and soak up the vibe.....!!!!! oooooohhhhhhh nice vibe!!!
  6. If it is excitement I would be taking all excitement out of it........ Maybe go to every show you can get to (even none bc shows) and just wander around the crowds like it were a stroll in the park. If you go towards the end you may even do the same 'wander idle' through some closed rings etc........ make it so old hat she isn't over excited about it. And don't worry, trust me I have done enough dog and horse showing (and horse judging) to know that training an over excited dog to keep her tail low is NOTHING at all to what people will really do. And surely this is no different that teaching a exagerated springy gait or to stand alert, or using makeup, curlers/curling irons etc........I doubt you are polluting the breed standard anymore than anyone else!!! I bet if you see half the show dogs at home in the backyard their carriage and appearance is unrecognisable....as most of it isn't how the dog would normall act.
  7. Is it the dog or the owner that needs superhero underwear??? Its amazing.....
  8. Never tried this and I might give it a go...... my bc isn't real bright so I doubt he will get it!
  9. You and Leo never cease to amaze me...... and the peter rabbit thing is????
  10. Congratulations Minty.......!!!!! What a great piccie!!!! Glad you had a great time!
  11. Its tough and I am sure people didn't mean to seem like they were attacking you........I was shocked at first to read you tugged your pups leg when asleep and it was only as I read on that you didn't mean it as it sounded........ I reckon go to the 2nd hand shop and get one of those big wooden playpens. It would give him a bit more room than a crate and you can train him to stay in there why your 1yo is most active. Put his bed in there, feed him in there, some toys etc........gives him a safe place to sleep and to be.... then when your 1yo is asleep or in highchair etc.....then the pup can come out and play! When they are both older they may appreciate each other more!
  12. I used to find walking my big black lab around the streets (he looks tough) that if he was heeling people would always stop and say how well behaved he was and give him a pat. If he was walking even on a loose lead people would detour right around. So it just seemed like good community manners to have him walk alongside me and he worked out it was great as everyone would stop and pat him. Heel was handy on the bike and rollarskates as I knew he wouldn't pull me over. Now that he is going a bit deaf I find in busy streets that hand signals was the best thing that I taught him in obedience. He often can't hear my voice over the car noise but can see the handsignals without a problem. And the recall signal he can see over a distance he definately can't hear.....
  13. I am quite disturbed by this thread...... muzzles, stalking dogs and an attack....and now mates are turning on each other. I hope the dog that attacked your dog isn't allowed back in the resort so that you can go back there with your dogs without fearing another problem. I hope the manager of the resort has been informed so that they can instigate their aggressive dog action plan. A 'stalking predator' dog could be big trouble and should have had been removed immediately by the owner or the resort staff. I hope it all turns out ok!
  14. Congratulations.............2 in one day, that is great!!!! WAHOO!
  15. This is great fun to teach them............ I taught my dad's security dog (a big rotti) to play 'bang' when I was about 15 and I even took it further to using a cap gun and would put a western scarf on the dog.......and he would stay super still 'dead' until I gave him the release word. I would ask him if he wanted to play 'cowboys and indians' and he would get so excited he would go get his scarf and jump around until I 'shot' him. Problem was one night out on patrol in a hotel carpark, a car backfired and the dog dropped 'dead'..... created quite an audience of drunken onlookers (who all thought the dog was really dead).....no one knew the release word and my dad had to ring me up, get me outta bed, so I could say it to the dog over the phone. Poor dog got super pissed that he didn't get his treat for such a good performance that he sulked all night. Although dad reckoned when he got up and crowd all cheered that he was grinning.
  16. Sounds like something my lab would do.......he thinks anything and everything he can just swallow. For bones I make sure it is far too big to go down whole!!! I always buy him the biggest whole marrow bone I can get and always uncut so he can't break it in half. I am sure like open heart surgery it will take awhile for her to work up her usual speed and agility but should be fine as long as you keep things nice and slow to begin with and build up very gradually! Let us know how she goes.....
  17. Hi Everyone, my 12yo lab has fluid around the heart and a bit of fluid on the lungs. As well as other things he is not permitted sodium or salt. And most of the commercial available dog treats I have seen have sodium or salt in it, even his fave liver treats. Does anyone have a good recipe for homemade dog treats??? Thanks!!!

    Supa Poopa

But its cold mummy! I bet he just doesn't want to go to far down the back in the cold on the wet grass..........I know I wouldn't!!!
  19. This is all a stir??? *Shaking head* How sad !!!
  20. My dogs have always been quite protective about their food and their treats.....and my lab certainly would threaten to rip the head off (prolly wouldn't as he is such a sook)......the head off any dog close enough. My only suggestion is to change the treat at the park or in public to something quick to scoff but something high reward she doesn't usually have..........and maybe keep the good chewing pigears for a reward when you get home and she doesn't have to worry about another dog taking her had earned yummies!
  21. Let us know how you go with talking to the parents......and with the park experiment!!! I have known quite a few bc's and have one now.....they can get quite sensitive about people or things that have given them a fright. Mine is scared of my umbrella and barks and growls at it when ever he sees it (which isn't often in Melb.) all because when he was about 6 months old it was leaning in the corner to dry and he brushed past it and it fell on the floor with a very loud clatter that obviously frightened him. Good Luck!
