  1. Oh yes, that's a photo we all need to see! :D
  2. All dogs over 8 weeks have to be registered, and registration is for life. No annual renewals required. I like the regs, just wish they were better enforced.
  3. You can't keep an undesexed dog without a special permit. I can't remember the fee for the permit, but the discount for being a member of a canine association makes it affordable. It's pretty steep without the discount though. If you sell an undesexed dog you have to advise the name and contact details of the buyer. This only applies for dogs over six months I think, so technically selling puppies undesexed is OK. And they could stay undesexed if the buyer gets the permit. So desexing isn't really mandatory, but keeping a dog undesexed is made more difficult. If it is enforced. No dog can be sold unchipped. From next year, all dogs must be chipped by 3 months of age. Edited: just checked the fees - if you are member of the greyhound racing fraternity or canine assoc the sexually entire permit is just over $60 per dog for a lifetime permit. If you aren't it's over $300. There is a pensioner discount too.
  4. I heard this story on the radio, the term BYB was used and the point was made that most of the dogs being sold unmicrochipped or not desexed were coming from breeders who weren't registered. It's not the RSPCA after reg breeders here. It's a legitimate concern the very good ACT laws aren't being properly policed.
  5. I believe the appropriate signal is to stand on one leg while holding your nose with one hand and waving wildly with the other. Shame I won't be there
  6. One of my dogs used to go out working once a week or so - when she came back she was usually a dominant little hussy for an hour or two until she settled down, even though she was not normally like that. I just used to be careful to let everyone have enough room until it wore off, no bunching up in doorways or anything else that might raise the tension, and reminded them all to behave. I never had a fight come out of it, but I was always aware of the need for things to settle down again before I could go back to my usually lax ways with them. I thought being out might have made her think she was 'special', but that is a very unscientific way to look at it . It didn't happen if she had just been for a walk or to the vet.
  7. Maybe she is a bit frightened of them Jess, or thinks they are unpredictable. The recent attack attributed publicly to a Staffy cross was very serious. People who don't like or understand dogs hear about such bad injuries inflicted by a 'family' dog and struggle to stay level-headed about it I think. Your mum would probably change her mind if she knew a few nice Staffordshires personally.
  8. It just sounded like 'why wouldn't someone else take responsibility for my problem, it's all 'their' fault' to me really. I don't hold the vet responsible. Although I am always puzzled by how someone could get and keep/feed a dog like a Neo, plus a GSD, but claim not to be able to work out a way to pay a not very large vet bill. Must just be me.
  9. Yes very warped. Although I also wouldn't be keen on people being able to get out of responsibility for paying just by claiming their dog had bitten.
  10. The way I read it, they could have had him put down if they paid the cost. But no authorities would put him down without them paying because he wasn't declared a dangerous dog.
  11. If you consider a post has crossed the line and become offensive or insulting, just hit the report button. More than one member in the time I have been on DOL has had to 'take a holiday' from the forums or has been banned permanently for breaching the forum rules on behaviour. The mods have demonstrated they are quite willing to take action if someone reports a breach. Of course, that doesn't stop someone expressing a view someone else might not like to hear, and nor should it. But they have to stick to the protocol in doing so.
  12. At 2 1/2 you could put her in intermediate if you wished, that is 18 mths to 3 years. But open is also fine.
  13. Me too. Followed by a food treat. No use hiding anything in food with my lot, they don't gulp anything.
  14. Given this was a family dog and members of the family were present, my expectation would be that they self-identified the dog as the breed mix that was stated in the later reports. Might not be what the dog was, but I'm thinking that is what the owners understood it was. This is not some random dog roaming the street.
  15. It's a very weird sounding situation. Can afford a Neo and a GSD and to feed them but can't afford 180 pounds to pts and expected it done for free, keep dog muzzled and know it's recently bitten but have it unmuzzled in the same room as their small child, after child is bitten chase dog out into the yard and then take the time to kick and hit and stab it when surely the child is needing help for it's injuries at that time. Just sounds like a really strange setup. Poor little girl.
  16. A Purdue University Vet School study in 2000 found a significant correlation between elevated food bowls and the incidence of bloat. I posted the abstract in a thread on bloat a few weeks ago, you'll probably find it if you search.
  17. Both days it was a Doberman BIS and Staffordshire Bull Terrier Runner-up
  18. I'll be back next year too - nice grounds, well run show, and great, convenient, dog friendly accomodation. I was fortunate enough to get best in hound group both days with one of my girls, which was a real buzz  . And got to handle a mop on legs lovely Puli on Saturday
  19. Hedge Fund Manager??? Jasmine: Professional athlete, or sexy blond girlfriend of a professional athlete. Arwen: Russian Princess (see above ) Rose: Girls' school headmistress or Dowager Duchess Me: boring!
  20. I've done a spectacular head-first fall over the top of a very tall and enthusiastic puppy that decided to leap on a leaf that had blown across our path. Fortunately the other dogs I was walking with her just stood there, probably quietly laughing at me like everyone else watching. We've all been there!
  21. For a pet Belgian I used to use a pin brush, a wide-toothed comb (called a Collie comb I think) and on some bits a slicker brush. These days I'd probably use a furminator or Mars as well (but I'm not a 'grooming ghuru').
  22. To be frank, it sounds like your problem is more with your BF than with the dog itself, although it does sound like you aren't too fond of Scooby. Treat the fleas, that's easy. Talk to your BF about house rules you can both agree on. Do some training with Scooby and give him clear boundaries you both communicate clearly. Implement a routine he can rely on. And ensure he gets enough exercise and socialisation. Edited - sorry pf, must have posted a minute behind you.
  23. You're right, I concede already. Howie will be looking unbelievable unbeatable.
