  1. When I had a dog like that I taught her to travel in the passenger foot well, when she couldn't see out she relaxed and eventually she outgrew the reaction anyway. These days when they are expected to be better secured in vehicles a crate with a limited visual field might help.
  2. ;) I LOVE that one. So funny Love it. Especially not letting the dog fail
  3. Yes, you could say it about a lot of individuals in a lot of breeds I think. Thre's a lot to be said for placing the right pup in the right home and providing the right advice. Even for dogs that aren't GSDs
  4. Sadly I think there are as many owners who fall into the irrepsonsible camp as the responsible ones. Hopefully mumsy's neighbours are the better kind.
  5. If the owners are responsible they may learn from the incident and keep the dog more safely contained. If they aren't responsive, it's a much harder matter to resolve and probably ends badly for the attacking dog, and maybe others. Either way I don't think I'd be letting the 9 year old walk the dog on her own.
  6. It's a little more than that here. People are saying that one of the techniques being promoted is too potentially dangerous to recommend without direct knowledge of the dog and handler involved. OK as an emergency control measure in a crisis maybe, but grossly irresponsible to recommend as a training technique sight unseen. They are saying the advice could get the handler or the dog seriously hurt. And that is more than a disagreement over technique, that's a disagreement over duty of care and personal responsibility. The other theme I read in this thread is that GSDs are different to other breeds, that dominance and sharpness are desirable characteristics in a good GSD, and therefore only experienced GSD trainers can handle what the breed 'experts' on here see as typical GSD adolescent aggression. The message is that aggression is so common and so stereotypical in GSDs that ways to manage it can be reliably prescribed over the internet, by GSD trainers only and again sight unseen, and they need to be very forceful methods indeed. I don't buy that last argument, but it's the most convincing damn argument for restrictions on the ownership of a particular breed I have heard for a long time, given that it comes from people claiming decades of breed experience. I'm saddened that a breed community that has been through that once isn't more careful in how it presents itself.
  7. Soo, is it always the boy dogs who are looking a little thick challenged???
  8. I think they get it, it would be hard to miss, it's just that some don't believe it. ;)
  9. That's what I reckon, he's such a good boy he wanted your permission. And now you think he's thick
  10. What an excellent accessory Alison! But to me that's more of a match for my ensemble for St Patrick's Day than Christmas, perhaps I just like too much tinsel?? I can see you could be a serious competitor to Deshonko if you put your mind to it! Or at least capture the niche Irish market. Now if Deshonko could just poach your IP and add a little more Christmas spirit... Of course it would need to be able to go into storage thrive alone in the yard during the non-holiday seasons.
  11. I guess all you can do is try. Some breed info at least would be better than nothing. And watch for some of them to turn up in the pounds when the coat comes in. Or worse, dead by the road if the new owners let them off leash without doing the groundwork or realising what they really have on the lead.
  12. I'm very impressed by your ability to make up source rare breeds Deshonko, but a little disappointed in the colour range. All I see are the same old dog colours and last year's jungle patterns. Don't you have anything in green? Or crimson? Something a little more Christmassy for the sake of the kiddies.
  13. The only one I know is produced by Ziwipeak. I don't know about sources in Qld but you can get it online.
  14. I'm another one who thinks you sound very sensible. But conflicting advice can be very confusing, and undermine your own confidence. I sincerely hope you find the right trainer to help you through it. He is such a young dog I am sure with the right help you will have a very good chance to get him back on track.
  15. This is also what I try to do - except if the body language is bad I move in front of my dogs and tell the approaching dog to go home in my most assertive voice. Trouble is that since having had a couple of pairs of off leash and unaccompanied dogs split up and run around me to have a go at mine, I am less confident about most dogs being low risk and in my capacity to chase them off if they are aggressive. Which means I am expecting trouble and reflect that down the lead - so my most closely bonded dog thinks she needs to step up and see them off herself. It's easy to see her point of view, she had to physically see off the pair of GSDs who ignored my best efforts and the last pair of JRTs didn't listen to me either. It's a feedback loop of my own making, I need to get back to relaxing and taking control - but gee it's hard after a couple of bad experiences. Some days it's an effort to get out and walk, because I am expecting to run into loose dogs.
  16. I think the key with any sighthound and cats is to pick the right puppy, as individuals vary greatly in how calm they are around small animals, and expose the puppy from a young age to the species it isn't allowed to chase, be that cats, roos, whatever. If going for a mature sighthound make sure it is already cat safe. Some rescue Greys are, many are not, but a good Greyhound rescue and foster will be very honest about that. I think she might have to wait a bit for a cat friendly one as they are very sought after. I have had cats longer than I have had my sighthound breed and had no issues. But I'm very careful with any new dog coming into the home.
  17. I just took it as a bit of fun. And it made me laugh when I needed a laugh. If that's any consolation Chewie
  18. Just remember that a card carrying member of PA would actually have to carry a card saying so at all times. Well I think so anyway, but I'm not really offay with pedantry.
  19. ..I don't think DOL could take it
  20. Does the Russian supermodel know about this?? Yes, she does. Gossip gets around. She just shrugged - so many more fish in the sea.
  21. Who's 'poodilfan'? Do you mean 'poodlefan' - who I don't think deserves the small-minded tag btw - or maybe 'poodiful1'?? Edited: "snap" pf
  22. Thanks for all that info sheree, I'm visting a tick area in a few weeks and it was very useful. I've never had to deal with them before.

    Anyone?

I've always taken the bit about the site being created to discuss dogs as a bit of a give-away. Along with forum titles like 'General DOG Discussion' (OK, it made up the caps and bolding, LOL.) Yes, it is a site about dogs but then it also has areas for reptiles, cats and off topic things. You said it was a breach of rules though, and as it is not stated in the rules, it can't be a breach. Yes those threads exist. In OFF-TOPIC along with all the health threads. Just make a few more posts Kate, and you'll find a whole world of health issues there

It will have been removed because it was nothing to do with dogs and so a breach of the rules, albeit an innocent one. Such discussions are for the 'off topic' forums. Not having enough posts yet for access to 'off topic' doesn't mean they can be held in the dog forums. Reposting replies will probably just get it deleted again. Reopening a deleted thread is also against the rules. Better to private message your experiences to the OP.
