Using Dna To Catch People Who Don't Clean Up After Their Dogs
Diva replied to sandgrubber's topic in In The News
It may look like that now, but you may change your opinion once dogs are not allowed anywhere outside their yards. Yep, dog sh*t on their shoes or on their child doesn't come bottom of the list for non-dog people. In the suburbs we share the public spaces with a lot of people who don't care for our animals, observing a bit of basic hygiene is not a lot to expect of us. I like the DNA testing because it enables precise identification of the slack and irresponsible owner and just the possibility of that can change the behaviour of those who rely on being able to stay anonymous. -
I've had two of these, go round the ring like a bag lady, gait beautifully back to the gazebo :p I've seen them do it! :p

I didn't know of that link pf, but the only one of mine with a real car sickness problem was a beautiful, well bred (parentage most certainly known!) Belgian Tervueren so that definitely fits with the herding dog theory. She grew out of it and came to love the car. Her breeder was certainly considered reputable !!

I'm really trying to understand where you are coming from, but I just can't see any reason how asking a child if their hands are clean before letting them pat a freshly groomed show dog is treating them like crap? Or why any parent would be offended by the question in an exhibition environment? Was it said nastily, is it the tone that was offensive? Because I really can't see how the question is per se.

Very, very, very cute

When the van that makes the good coffee doesn't turn up

The larger Borzoi do it too. It's not unusual for the very long legged breeds. Cute though.

Not sure I follow, the OP is in the USA. I think they were just posting to show us the breed, not sure anyone at all was suggesting we need it here for huntiing.
-
Absolutely - I can even get us a local guide to the best places. We should do it then. After Christmas but before the show season really starts next year. efs

Comon Things People Dont Realise About Your Breed
Diva replied to MonElite's topic in General Dog Discussion
To add to the Borzoi list - NO, I did not cut my dogs' ears off. 2 separate incidents when people thought rose ears were chopped off ears -
It's a few years ago now, but as far as I recall I used an oral supplement daily for a few months. Back then I lived in an area (and so had the dog for some years) where the sandy soils were known to be low in zinc, and the theory was that produce from that region was also low in zinc. The dog's normal diet, when with his owner, was not fabulous so it was quite possible his diet had been deficient for some time. Or maybe he absorbed it poorly or had an unusually high need for it, whatever it was, supplementation helped a lot.

Yes, I used it with success on a spaniel I was minding for a few months who had chronic skin problems.

A Question About Two-tone Australian Kelpies

This reminds of a Google translation of a Russian language site for my fav breed. According to the Google translator a 'cheese head' is a fault. Well yes, I guess it would be Interesting thread btw. -
Do You Have To Put The Anti-tick Stuff On The Back Of The Neck?
Diva replied to Jennt's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't think Advantix kills worms either and that's the one I use if I am travelling to a tick area. The product info says it 'spreads over the skin'. It also claims to repel ticks, as well as killing those that bite. So I assume it depends on which product used. -
Do You Have To Put The Anti-tick Stuff On The Back Of The Neck?
Diva replied to Jennt's topic in General Dog Discussion
Mine wouldn't lick it if I paid them, lol. Applying at a couple of places on a large dog helps with the coverage. I have had a few vets tell me that and it was the instruction on the one I used earlier this year too. I've usually heard that the front end of the dog was the most likely place for ticks though. -
Do You Have To Put The Anti-tick Stuff On The Back Of The Neck?
Diva replied to Jennt's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have large dogs and if I have to use a spot on I split it between the withers, the middle of the back and between the hip bones. -
I doubt there would be any acute effects on the dogs, I think most of us must ingest small amounts from damaged cookware from time to time. The US EPA had teflon as a suggested carcinogen for humans last I heard but that is not a very definitive listing. The gases from teflon heated at high temperatures can however kill birds.

It's a lovely colour! :D I've edited my post to change the tense, comes from posting too late at night. I think they've dropped the reference in the current standard. It was in earlier versions and English translations of Russian standards. Although it sensibly didn't seem to stop black and tans being successful in the ring in Europe even then.

How about 'prefix' whotwerewe thinking :D I show, but sometimes wonder why....

what does 'attracting all of your sensory functions' mean? Firstly, I refer to 'energy as being a state of presence and not a paranormal sprit or something freaky like that. When someone walks into the room, which of your senses is the first to notice that someone new has just entered??...could be your sight, sound or even smell. You will immediately know if he/she is a person of importance or not by observing (with one or more of your sensory functions) his/her energy. The person's energy has attracted your sensory functions. Hope that makes sense!! Thanks, I thought you were saying more than that. But I get your point. off topic, but I don't quite agree with the bolded bit for many human power relationships. I have dealt with a number of truly powerful people in different roles. Many are very low presence/low energy and you'd never notice them in a room unless they chose for you to. Get a bunch with that style in a room together and sometimes it feels like a contest as to who can be the most low key/low presence, they ramp it all down as a sign of status and authority, not up. Not all important people do that of course, but neither do all of them draw your senses.

A breeder is a temporary guardian of a breed, our aim is to preserve that breed and hopefully pass it on to the next generation of breeders is as good or even better condition than when we started. I have dedicated 36 years of my life to one breed of dog and to me the breed standard is sacrosanct. However I understand that it is virtually impossible for those who don't breed to understand that concept and to comprehend just how involved we are with the the welfare of our breeds, how much respect we have for their history and how much concern we have for their future. I don't breed but I understand, respect and share your positon. I have serious concerns with breeders who don't act as guardians for their breeds. And that is both when they breed indiscriminately for commercial reward without regard for the long term health and welfare of the breed, or on the other hand breed only for show ring results without regard for the long term health and welfare of the breed. I have met both types, as well as many who feel as you do and who I therefore applaud. I have just as serious concerns about those who think breed standards don't matter and it would be just fine to turn our breeds into whatever the current fashion dictates. There may be individual cases where breed standards in particular countries could be changed for the betterment of a breed, particularly if they are out of step with country of origin standards or new scientific knowledge can better inform them. We can't turn our back on new knowledge or we end up redundant. But it should never be done lightly or for the sake of fashion or without full regard for the rich history and original purpose of the breeds. Whether that original purpose exists now or not. JMHO. efs

I think you are all bad, bad people leading me down the path of temptation...again! I swear the dogs have much nicer looking accessories than I do :D
