  1. I'm not online this evening, so I'll give the answer and let someone else post an easier one. That is a Stepnoi, also known as the Stepnaya Borzaya, or Steppe Borzoi, in English the South Russian Steppe Hound. I took the photo at a dog show in St Petersburg where a very small number were entered. so, who has a pic to post?
  2. Yep. A rather rare sighthound, but sighthound nerds should get it pretty quick.
  3. Great Espinay, can I pass on my unused bottles to you? You're nice and local. Free of course, just need the room in the cupboard
  4. I used to use Champion Tails on my white Borzoi but I've found if I can keep her coat in very good condition I don't need it. Her coat looks better than it ever has now that I use very minimal product. I had previously tried Chris Christensen and Isle of Dogs but they were both too harsh on her coat. PP was OK but not as effective on her as the Champion Tails. (mind you I'm not on red dirt, just Canberra clay. Red dirt might be more of a challenge)
  5. My old Tervueren girl used to lie down so the cat could suckle on her. She had no milk and the cat was an adult. A tad weird but sweet.
  6. sorry, thought that was a 'no' from Rozzie and didn't check this thread again. Try this one (you'll have to click on it to make it bigger)
  7. Twice in recent years I have had strangers stop their cars to jump out and help me get an aggressive dog off mine. My guys are big, and stand a good chance in a fight. But getting attacked when quietly walking an on lead dog down the street is appalling. Poor brave lady, poor little dog. Thank goodness people stopped to help her.
  8. So you must know how the brother works to consider him, if you think that he is as likely to produce what you want, use him. It sounds like he may not be available on the statistically most likely days, but if you have bred her before what days did she tie then? Would thatbe your best guide? I have no problem with you not keeping a puppy, if the demand is there from good savvy homes why not fulfill it.
  9. Thanks, I know breeders are putting that label on dogs who's provenance is dodgy, that is what i was hinting at. Either way, not a dog for just anyone.
  10. Good luck with it, I'd be interested to hear how it goes.
  11. [quote name='dasha' timestamp='1352193578' post='6011490' The dog in option 3 is a litter brother to the preferred dog so genetically the same. So as close to the real thing. He is also a cheaper service fee!!! Litter brothers are not genetically the same. They may have inherited a very different combination of genes. Go to the dog you think works best for the bitch, or take the more convenient option and save a few dollars, I know which I would do.
  12. Of the two sightounds I tried a tug with, one was very into it, very intense, and immediately. She still is, even in strange places. She has no interest at all in balls, is less hot on a lure then the other girl, and is the softest of the two. I found it really interesting that she was so very keen.
  13. A recent Harvard study showed that tinfoil hats amplify radio waves in government controlled frequency bands to the skull. Traditionally they have been worn in a belief that they protect the wearer from mind control - who do you think started that false information campaign though? That is nuts but very funny. A Schizophrenic or a long term marijuana user ?? The Government Labradork, the Government (hums tune to the X Files) On a serious note, I'm worried about your security Yellowgirl, if you don't go out for long, can you get the blind dogs used to being crated maybe, so you can lock the dog door.
  14. previous thread Looks very similar to the one that was in a pound in 2010. I suspect it's not the shelter putting this ID on them, but the breeder. Someone mentioned Pharoahs earlier - you'd think a breed like that would be rare in rescue, but there are actually a lot that end up there. It just takes one breeder who isn't careful enough in where they place these special breeds for a rescue problem to emerge, no matter how rare the breed is otherwise. I'm not saying that is the case here, she could be there for a number of reasons.
  15. Some people know they are in the country, dancinbcs. From what I remember this would not be the first of the breed ending up in a shelter or pound. Whether this bitch is one I don't know. The more common name for the breed here is Sarplaninac. I don't think any are ANKC reg.
  16. I'd have said you were right about sighthounds before I tried my two one day at Steve's. No hesitation, straight on the tug.
  17. I think there is a breeder in Australia, or at least someone who advertises as a breeder. from what I have heard they need a very capable owner.
  18. One of mine came from a breeder who has no dogs inside. She was easy to toilet train, has always been scrupulously clean, very social and outgoing, and pretty well bomb proof.
  19. Ca de Bou? Or Perro de Torro? I'm guessing, don't know much about the heavy breeds.
  20. I'd say your experience was unusual, I don't show much these days but I have not seen officials at any show airing any 'dirty linen' in front of the public. A disgruntled exhibitor might speak uncharitably, but I am surprised a show sec or similar would. Not a nice impression for you to get though.
  21. As far as I can remember, there is one study conducted in the late 60's which sampled one arctic wolf with a comparison made to two dogs, and a variation was found between them. More studies have been done just on dogs and there have been a variation in results between them as well. I would note that in this context no real comparison has been done on the effects of maternal diet on these results. Though there are other studies looking at individual effects on milk composition of maternal diet, for example in relation to long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid content. Mech does mention that some commercial dog milk replacement formulas are too low in arginine for wolves and pups may develop cateracts without additional arginine supplementation. However, this issue is not restricted to wolves: http://jn.nutrition.org/content/132/6/1688S.short Thanks
  22. That's interesting Espinay. I read a while back a paper that compared the milk of dogs and wolves and found that dog's milk had a different fat/protein composition, although I'd stress that the differences were not large. Have you ever come across that research? I can't find the paper now, it's been a few years. (apologies if this is too off topic, it's a far way off the vegan question)
  23. Sounds like Turid Rugaas (and I am very likely to have spelt that wrong) 'On talking terms with dogs : calming signals'. Meanwhile, I am trying to figure out how I can lick my own nose, lol.
