Rescue and quarantine?? I remember a couple of years ago, 2010 I think. Local pound, DAS, was in parvo lock down for weeks. Supposedly reputable rescue took 2 dogs out of there the very day they came out of parvo virus lockdown, and put them on PUBLIC transport without going through any quarantine. No quaratine first , straight out onto a plane. So yeah, some very irresponsible, even hypocritical, things happen on both sides eh. Only need to read dol to see that.

I agree you need some professional help, but in the interim I would certainly stop trying to interrupt his behaviour towards strangers by picking him up. Lock him away before they arrive, or if you cannot predict their time of arrival maybe leave a short 'tab' of a lead on his collar when he is in the house and use that to move him away once he is aroused. The bites to family sound like redirected aggression, picking him up and putting those teeth near your face when he is that aroused is not worth the risk.

Report Of The Nsw Taskforce On Companion Animal Welfare
Diva replied to Aphra's topic in In The News
Put in a submission to the process and explain why it will mean the demise of small breeders, and why that is a bad thing. Write to your local member of parliament and the relevant Minister/s The politicians probably dont know small dedicated breeders even exist, so tell them, and let them know you care enough for it to affect your vote. Even a one page letter is worth the effort. -
If you go to the Dogz Online main site and then to the event diary they are all listed there. Looks like only Borders and Hounds on that day in Sydney. efs

Awful, bet the owners are frantic.

Hate to be picky but these people aren't about welfare, and neither will their drones be. Yes as already mentioned, Animal Welfare would not risk the welfare of animals to do this. Animal Rights is very different. It says in the story that it's Animal Welfare that are doing it. The news story describes them as an animal welfare group, but names them as Animal Liberation. Animal Liberation is an animal rights group, not welfare. Views domestic animals as equivalent to human slavery and all that agenda. Oh OK, it could be worded better. Animal Liberation are just PETA under a blanket Yep

Fish Heads: How To Make Them More Appealing

Thanks, that makes good sense. And I buy them fish from the same market, lol, although its very infrequent. -
Fish Heads: How To Make Them More Appealing
Diva replied to Chequeredblackdog's topic in General Dog Discussion
Why is that? The logic I've heard behind not feeding raw fish is the bacteria and parasites it can contain. However, I'm not sure if this is in the same context as not feeding raw chicken due to salmonella, or if it's actually true. Freezing fish kills anything lurking in it anyway, so if you're feeding fish that's been frozen it's safe. But my question related to the post that suggested white fish should be cooked, and oily fish didn't need to be. What is the rational behind the advice to treat them differently? -

National Bi-weekly Companion Animals News Paper

I rarely buy newspapers of any sort, it is not how I get information these days. This one would not be any different for me tbh. -
I'm Friends With The Judge (or I Am Paying Them)...
Diva replied to Dobecrazy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Corrupt judging happens just as lazy judging and ignorant judging do. But if you worry too much about that it will spoil your fun. If you know a few old timers who can let you know the reputation of a judge you are considering it is worth asking, because while you may not get the full reason many experienced people are happy to discretely let you know if they are 'worth an entry', as long as they are very confident that you can also be discrete in how you handle the information. Sometimes, if I am just after points on a young dog and I know their 'interests' don't extend to my breed, I don't necessarily much care if a judge's ethics are dodgy at BIG or BIS level. Sometimes I am just there for the challenge points. It is important though to recognise that mostly you will get an honest appraisal from a judge trying their best, and you are more likely to lose because of a better dog, or a better trained and handled dog, or a judge that just has a different preferred style, or a judge whose best judgement is just not that great, than for bias. -
One of the dogs that used to catch up at the local off-lead oval had terrible recall and used to drag a long lead as it ran around. Originally I was concerned about it being a safety hazard to other dogs but in all the times we played with him no dog had any issue, and mine run crazy hard. It was a soft long line, definitely not an extending lead which would be a hazard.

Cool, but ever so slightly creepy.

Funny Things You Have Heard About Your Breed...
Diva replied to SwaY's topic in General Dog Discussion
Mmm, I think that is Ibizans! Worst I have heard from a judge, 'loved the cat feet on my BOB'. Funny only because they ares supposed to have hare feet. -
Well until I went back and read the 'Boxer' bit in the sub-heading, I thought it was maybe very much in the wrong forum!
-
Then it's a good thing that's not what I asserted at all. What makes you think a planned, safe approach to exposing dogs to novelty can't involve strange dogs? I can read a dog. Can't you? I pick my environments, carry treats for counter-conditioning, and have escape routes and contingencies planned. I just remain mystified that everybody seems to have such problems with loose dogs and I do not. I've had my dogs off leash in more parks and on more beaches than I can keep track of and they have never been injured and they both still quite like other dogs. And it's not like they are both magical dogs with phenomenal temperaments. I went for years without a bad incident with a loose dog, and I used to post much like Corvus does on this issue, I couldn't understand why others had problems when my dogs always just handled it. They had great social skills. I would walk the streets for miles without any issue, loose dogs never posed a threat. Then I moved suburbs, and discovered how much of my previous sense of safety was just luck and geography.
-
Yeah after the GSD incident it took me a long time to regain my calmness in the face of loose dogs, but I have to at least fake it for my dogs' sake. It makes a world of difference.
-
If I had small dogs I don't think I could walk them at all where I do, I would be too worried. It was enough of a worry when I had a geriatric. Mine quite like other dogs, but we have had a pair of unaccompanied GSDs attack the youngest when she was about 6 months and be fought off by my older dog, a stafffy mix break through its front wire door to cross the street and attack, requiring the help of a complete stranger driving by to get it off, 2 pitties stalk us down a street, another off lead staffy mix with a kid owner attack the oldest , a bullmastiff and sharpei bail us up in our own driveway- this is over a couple of years but each time mine were on lead in an on lead area, and the others loose. Doesn't even count the friendly loose dogs. Ridiculous. Doesn't happen as much now that they are mature, I think the bullies think twice about taking them on.
-
Now my dogs are adults I have given up worrying about the 'she just wants to say hi' owners - their dogs will come off second best if they aren't friendly and I am completely over worrying about other people's pets. If somone is stupid enough to let their toy poodle have the run of the street, and they are, it is not my problem if my dogs trample it when it runs over to 'say hi'. Sounds heartless but I have had enough. The only dogs that cause me anxiety now are the loose, unaccompanied strays that attack, and as I know I can't physically take them out by myself I either carry a stick, or walk both dogs together which makes for a formidable combination, much more formidable than they look being long coated and pretty. When they were young they were attacked a couple of times, and I found it deeply distressing. But I realised that my distress was causing more harm to the dogs than the attacks. So now I stay calm, hope i can send the attacker packing, but let them fight back if they need to. I hate that walking a dog can be so fraught in an ordinary urban neighbourhood because of the irresponsible w*nk^rs but it is.
