When one of mine was in the last few weeks of life with bone cancer she was at the vet every 3 days for pain management. The number of selfish morons who thought they had a right to shove their ill behaved mutts in her face was a disgrace. Even when I told them anyone knocking her would cause her great pain, that she dying, they still said 'oh just let him say hello, he wants to'. I physically had to push a couple away, but it was the owners I wanted to kick.

I thought the same, they would take one look and just tip it over

Unfortunately you can't. The breeder has to register the litter and transfer the pup to you (or in some states they can register directly in your name). They can't register the litter if both parents aren't on the main register, so the puppies in that scenario can't have papers. They can't register the litter if they aren't registered breeders themselves either. Even if the pups are registered, if the breeder won't transfer the registration and hasn't entered into a contract that says they will, the buyer can't do anything to get papers. If they had said you could have the papers and then didn't supply them you might have legal recourse, but they haven't done that. Of course the puppies may not even be purebred, you can only take the breeders' word for it in that situation. Or the parents may have limited registration, meaning purebred but not meant to be bred from, so again puppies can't be registered. Or they may be from generations of unregistered dogs bred by unregistered breeders, plenty of those about.

Vizsla showing aggressive tendencies with other dogs...
Diva replied to Haggis Supper's topic in General Dog Discussion
I would get a medical consult too, a veterinary behaviouralist could do both. For a 6 year old sociable dog to become intolerant I would expect a precipitating incident, for example her being attacked or a big change in her living arrangements. If there is nothing like that in her recent past I would definitely get a vet check for things like thyroid problems. -
Brit group develops non invasive tests for brachy airway disease
Diva replied to RuralPug's topic in General Dog Discussion
I was skeptical that any would breath easily but the video RuralPug post was illuminating, the researchers were clear that their testing has found examples in the breeds that are just fine. So I don't go along with the call to stop breeding those breeds completely, it is about ethical well informed breeding and ethical well informed buying. Trouble is so many unethical breeders have been drawn to these breeds by their extreme popularity. Popularity destroys quality in many breeds, the traditional serious breeders get swamped by those jumping on a profitable band wagon. And the public are largely to blame because of their addiction to fashion in all things, including dogs. Any traditional serious breeders that push back get labelled 'elitist'. -

The French Bulldog Club of NSW is currently fund raising to get a testing chamber for Sydney Uni. There is a Go Fund Me page. -
White German Shepherd puppy - FREE to a good home!
Diva replied to Cuko13's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
If he has hip dysplasia please disclose this to those who enquire, you are only storing up pain and expense for the new owner and pain for the dog if you don't. Honesty and full disclosure is the best thing you can do for this dog. Trying to see him again won't do him any favours either, he is likely to settle better if you don't. I am confused by you suggesting people want to take free dogs as 'breeders' when his add says he is desexed? I think really he will be better off if you just let White Shepherd Rescue place him. And stop calling him rare, that just attracts the wrong sort of interest. They aren't that rare anyway, if they need a whole rescue org devoted to them. Good luck. -
I am very sorry for your pain. Zena sounds like a very beautiful soul.

Complaint about a dog breeder (Advice needed)
Diva replied to nathansmith's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have heard Isabella used for Dobermann's that are both liver and blue dilute, so genetically bb dd. But I don't think it is always used, depends on breed. Some seem to use lilac for the same genotype. -
I doubt you would be fined for pushing it back if it comes within arms reach. But it may redirect on you, or the owner react with aggression. I have had to string dogs up by their collars to keep them off mine, owners were not impressed but better than my dogs being bitten. It does rely on one's own dog staying calm and out of the way. And you accepting the risk you may cope a bite if it is that aggressive. Unlikely to resolve the issue if you keep running into them, it will eventually escalate.

Marking territory inside, suggestions???
Diva replied to Rascalmyshadow's topic in General Dog Discussion
I would use belly bands, they will reduce your stress and as long as you give the boys plenty of opportunity to relieve themselves outdoors do them no harm. -

Only if we take his post as gospel. I don't. -
update; Staffordshires going to court - rescue still refusing to return
Diva replied to _PL_'s topic in In The News
While I accept that there are many sides to a story, I am not at all convinced by tone or content of the rescue's version. And he completely lost me when he said 'she is a registered breeder' as if that itself is a black mark. A 'she said he said' best sorted by the court imho. -
Raw V Good quality dry food [emoji848]
Diva replied to Heath62's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
You wil probably get a whole range of answers from kibble is poison to raw is a health risk. For some weird reason dog food is a diversive subject people get passionate about. It is not a bad idea to just get your pup from a good breeder and follow their advice through puppyhood, or at least until you feel confident in your choices. Your original idea of a good quality kibble supplemented by fresh meaty bones is fine. -
Cuddles/hugs from strangers can come across as aggressive to dogs, people they don't know pinning them, invading their space and preventing their ability to leave isn't necessarily perceived as affectionate by a dog. Might be. Might well not be. I don't like strangers grabbing me either. Cuddles by owners are quite different. My dogs are big cuddlers with friends and family, they love the close contact.

Supplements do make a difference. 4CYTE is a good one. But people will offer their own favourites. Keeping him lean helps. And the vets have an injection that is given monthly that helps too.

Seminar - Making Canberra more pet friendly
Diva replied to Tempus Fugit's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks for posting the seminar notice. That article isn't far off the truth though, except that I think it is better enforcement of current rules, esp the leash laws, that is required rather than new laws. I feel very much for those owners watching their old dog killed in front of them. The place seems to be full of people who think they are magically exempt from the requirement to keep their dogs under control. The number of times my leashed dogs have been rushed by aggro dogs while walking beggars belief and if they weren't large and able to fight back I would have stopped walking them long ago.- 1 reply

That's a shame, they seem to be well tolerated generally (although they look very odd !). The only other thing I can think of is to get some washable Kylie blankets and put them down in all of her favourite spots.
-
What about the kind of bitches britches made for entire bitches in season who are also house dogs? They use absorbent pads, a bit of a hassle as you have to change them but at her age maybe worth contemplating.

Most people will enter both shows, occasionally someone thinks one judge might like their dog and the other won't so they only do one day. Mostly though the entry will be the same each day. Sunday will be fine.
-
I just went looking for the schedule assuming you are looking at the NSW Club. They are runnning 2 full shows, a full show on Sat and a different show and judge on Sunday. So all classes each day. You can go either day and will see mostly the same dogs. i forgot you have two breeds too, so they start with all the Bull Terriers first on Sat then the minis, Minis go first on Sunday.

1 to 5 are age based classes, running from baby puppy at 3-6 months, then minor puppy, puppy, junior and ending at intermediate, 18-36 months. Classes 6,7 and 8 are seldom used, they have entry rules based on how much the dog has won or not - novice, graduate, limit. Classes 9 and 10 are based on where the dog was born, 9 being State bred and 10 Australian bred. Usually only Aust bred is held. And 11 is Open, any dog over 6 months in age can enter. 12 and 13 are Veterans, 7-10 years and over 10. 15, 16 and 17 are neuter age classes as yet seldom used, the most frequent neuter class is 18, Open neuter. All male classes have just the number, female classes have A after the number. Usually the regular male classes run first followed by the male challenge (best male). Then the regular female classes and challenge, Then the run offs between the class winners. Repeat for neuter. if you want to google it is ANKC regulations Part 5, Section 1, 1.2. States have the same in their regs.

I have big dogs and feed drumsticks sometimes. Mostly though I stock up on whole chickens when they are on special, cut them straight down the middle and they get half each. The per kilo price is similar to necks and wings but much meatier.

I think you have lots of options in that size range if you walk twice daily and are serious about doing some sort of obedience or dog sport to engage their minds. If you want to do agility, maybe stick to the lower sizes. A lot simply depends on your personal preference, unless you are deadly serious about being a gun in the obed or agility rings. Lots of Vizslas around where I am and I have met some really lovely ones, they would be top of my list for gun dogs. You have already thought of GSPs, and even a German Wirehaired Pointer turned up in one of my obed classes, but some GSP I have met required a fair bit of management. Both English Spinger Spaniels and the smaller Welsh SS, and Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, are worth a look. English Pointers seem rarer outside of the show scene, very beautiful but probably a bigger challenge in the obed ring and maybe a bit big in size. Setters of course, English, Irish red, Irish Red and White and Gordon - I haven't seen a Setter in obedience for years but some Irish red setters used to do very well around here. Each setter type has a very different temperament but worth checking out if you like their appearance. If if you wanted smaller and sleeker I would consider looking at a Whippet, they train surprisingly well for a sighthound, and are excellent house dogs which are becoming very popular as pets. Not a typical obedience breed at all but very nice dogs. There are lots of medium sized working breeds, a lot of choice if you went that way. Border Collies and Australian Shepherds are commonly used for dog sports, Kelpies too. The Belgian Shepherds are my favourite working breeds, but the Malinois can be very very high drive, might be better looking at one of the others like Tervueren or Groenendael- you do have a lot of coat then though. Why not go to a dog show and watch Group 3 for a start, that is the Gundog ring, and Group 5, the working/herding breeds. If you look at the Dogzonline main pages they have an Events Calendar that will tell where and when they are held across Australia, obedience trials too.

Complaint about a dog breeder (Advice needed)
Diva replied to nathansmith's topic in General Dog Discussion
Depends what you want the outcome to be, and if you have a written contract what it says about health guarantees. Your State Department of Fair Trading or a small claims court are probably your best bet. You could complain to the State Kennel Control but they have no power to get a better outcome for you.
