  1. Most prescription drugs for humans are subsidised by the taxpayer through the pharmaceutical benefits scheme. Hence the ‘peanuts’ price at chemist warehouse, the government is subsidising the rest of the cost. Not unreasonably, this does not extend to pets. Nonetheless I find it cheaper to get a script for any long term medications and get them at the chemist. Not as cheap as a pbs script, but cheaper than the vet. You should probably ask your chemist how much it would be though. Probably even cheaper online through a veterinary pharmacy site. I don’t know about insurance, but I don’t think it should affect your claiming.
  2. Is your point just that breeding back to back is better for pyo risk? I think that is fairly well known but pyo risk isn’t all that people base their decisions on. I have never had pyo in mine, touch wood, even though most of my bitches are entire their whole lives and never bred. As for wild dogs, they often come into season every 12 months not 6, much as the more primitive breeds still do. Talking to a Basenji breeder is interesting. In the wild breeding is also responsive to the natural variation in the availability of resources, competition for breeding rights, and high infant mortality. Not really a comparable situation to breeding a domestic bitch.
  3. They sound like they might have been hunting mixes, given that Dachshunds were breed originally to go to ground and face fierce, well armed, prey such as badgers. It is very odd that they attacked and the poor woman couldn’t get away from them though - quite surreal. Maybe she had a mobility issue or other disability.
  4. Breeding on two consecutive heats is fine with me, but that is not the same as breeding EVERY heat. Research on the first does not justify the second. As for behaviour in the wild, there are a whole lot of limiting environmental conditions in the wild that don’t get to work their influence when we start making the decisions.
  5. That would be my concern too. Maybe it was a reasonable price. But I would be expecting a very convincing explanation as to why it was so far beyond the upper end of the quote.
  6. So sorry. I remember the stories of his adventures.
  7. I am very sorry this happened to you, it sounds very distressing. Just my opinion, but if the vet can be sure the pup must have already had the cancer when you bought her I would expect a reasonable breeder to refund the purchase price. While they probably didn’t know it, they sold you a pup that was already terminally ill. I think that warrants a refund if you don’t want to take up the offer of another puppy. But you might have to take a legal route to get it. vet bills are a bit different, they could argue they had no say in choice of treatment, they didn’t have a chance for their own vet to be involved, you could have returned the pup etc. I think if you incurred those costs without consulting them at all then the responsibility is probably yours. Again just my opinion. As for blaming the degree of inbreeding in the breed, it might be a factor or it might not. Buyer research into breed issues and breeders before purchase can improve the odds of getting a healthy pup, but a tumour of that sort at that age sounds like it has a large component of tragic bad luck to it.
  8. Yes it happens, but I wish it was the way more often
  9. Flying is a noisy experience, if she is scared now by a far off rumble I would be very concerned that her noise phobia is going to make such a trip extremely difficult for her. I agree you need some professional help as soon as possible.
  10. It is largely a forum of pet people now. Most of the breed experts have moved on (no offence intended to any remaining).
  11. I have found ToTW to be a good food. No doubt some people will reply that the peas are a problem for fertility (phytoestrogens), but that far down the ingredient list I think they are OK. Not a problem for non breeding dogs anyway. And sweet potato is a one of the better vegetables for dogs. If you are near a Costco store their home brand grain free, Nature’s Domain, is quite similar and much cheaper, but less variety and I don’t recall a puppy version. One of the issues in picking a puppy food is how big your dog is going to be. Very large/giant breeds need to be careful with the nutrient balance in puppy diets, too nutrient dense may cause growth problems. But if you have a JRT as your pic suggests that isn’t an issue, they don’t put on the massive growth of a Great Dane!
  12. I had a Belgian Shepherd diagnosed with immune mediated haemolytic anemia who developed poly arthritis during his recover phase. He recovered from both with cortisone treatment.
  13. Female dog I assume? What substrates does she have available at home? Is it a recent problem, and if so what has changed in the environment? One of mine will only go on grass. She would burst before she would urinate on concrete or paving. If the dog doesn’t have the surface she thinks is right available at home it might be a cause. Otherwise I agree putting urination on cue might help.
  14. Desexing might help, it can in boys, but I think you would do best to get professional help. Once dogs have developed an issue with each other it can be difficult to resolve. I see you are in WA and someone here should be able to recommend a trainer or behaviouralist. Don’t go to just anyone, get some recommendations first.
  15. I tried it with my dog who had bone cancer. Didn’t seem to make any difference. However my (human) friend who takes it swears it helps her arthritis pain. Of course humans are much more susceptible to the placebo effect.
  16. It is not just a matter of other organisations applying, they have to have the codes of conduct and compliance and enforcement in place to meet the criteria and qualify. I find it unlikely those orgs haven’t considered becoming an applicable organisation already so something must not meet the requirement and may well be expensive to address. I think Dogs Vic went to considerable effort to make sure they could cover their members and have invested to make it possible. They didn’t get special treatment, they went to the effort to deliver. And you are right, ANKC is not going to put the international system of mutual recognition of registries at risk by registering a breed the AKC doesn’t. ‘Country of origin’, or in occasional cases of development, is where the recognition authority lies. Can you register as a domestic animal business? I think that is the requirement applicable organisation status avoids. or to put it another way, welcome to the world of hobby dog breeding. It can be a pretty fraught regulatory environment these days.
  17. I think your chances of getting ANKC registration for a breed developed in the US but not recognised by the AKC are zero. Asking council for an exemption seems your best hope.
  18. Not Federal. Federal dog laws are confined to matters like import/export and (potentially) trade. Everything else is the responsibility of states/territories and local govt.
  19. You could ask if you can get a vet check at your own vet before committing and paying. They probably won’t agree. Or you take your chances and get them fully vaccinated, wormed, heart worm tested and flea treated as soon as you get them.
  20. Although I wouldn’t necessarily get a pure white for your situation I don’t think you are limited to blue. Fawns and reds should be fine, and I wouldn’t dismiss a black, there are plenty of black and tan kelpies working all day in the sun. The variation in brindles is huge, visually they can be very different looking, and some may well appeal. I think you are limiting yourself if going to the beach is the main reason you want blue. I have even had white dogs (not whippets) that have black rather than pink skin, and that may well happen in whippets too.
  21. The Kennel Club list that seems to have inspired the article has the King Charles on it, not the Cavalier, looks like maybe the article made a mistake. The pictured dog looks more like a King Charles too.
  22. I wouldn’t expect a 12 month old to be cheaper than a puppy, they have the advantage of much of the hard work of puppy raising being done and you can really see what you are getting in both conformation and temperament. Many people prefer them at that stage. If it were older, more like 7 yrs or over, I might expect a lower or no price, but not that young. As for refunding the original owner that is very individual, it depends on the terms of original contract, and even in the absence of a contract some breeders will refund if the reasons for return are valid and they think the dog will be able to be resold easily, others not. Sometimes they have costs getting the dog back, too.
  23. I have the petlife dog loungers, my dogs love them and they seem very tough. I had some pods4pets but found they clung to every stray hair, threw them out in the end. https://www.ozhut.com.au/purina-petlife-ultra-tough-flea-resistant-lounger-metallic-beds.html
