I don't expect double handling to be allowed, It wouldn't work if it was I never said I supported double handling to that extent be allowed in the all breeds ring, I said I have no issues with other exhibitors using food and toys if it works for their dogs.. I don't use anything in the all breeds ring fory dogs. So maybe you should re-read my posts ;)

I was not mocking anyones opinion, the topic is double handling, I don't see how double handling is intimidating at all ??? I am not a person that has been showing for many many years, my first girl is a successful bitch in both the specialty ring and the all breeds ring, I have never ever found showing specialty intimidating, most people are accomodating and helpful and many people been in the breed for years are happy to help out newcomers to the breed... I'm not a clown, there a no elephants, no daring young men on flying trapize, therefore I find it quite rude and insulting to call our specialty shows a circus, the time and effort that goes into fitness and training for these shows is endless, so unless you have experienced the GSD ring for yourself and understand the effort that goes in by both owners, handlers, breeders and double handlers I too find other opinions irrelevant
-
How is it intimidating :D you have a handler in the ring with your dog, you call your dog on the outside... I'm sorry but it's not intimidating at all
-
A little bit confused by your opening statement regarding a GSD should have "endurance" but then you go on to say in follwoing paragraph that dbl handling can be used for dog "getting tired". If a dog has endurance then a dozen laps round a ring should make it tired???? Also if it's getting tired does that then mean that it doesn't conform because it doesn't have "endurance", so therefore, if there was no double handling to pep up a tiring dog then those of lesser quality will be seen quicker? I don't mind double handling in the Specality Ring - it's amusing to watch for a couple of minutes of so! Double handling can be used for a dog that is getting tired/bored or loosing focus :D as stated double handling is an art, it can change from show to show on how much or how little your dog needs, depending on how they feel on the day
-
Well said Heidii :D GSD set rules no differently to any other breed club, we have our own club, like every other breed club and we will run our shows the way we feel is best for our breed If other GSD Enthusiasts do not wish to participate then thats there decision. Angelsun - If you feel that the GSD's you show in the all breeds ring can compete with those in the specialty shows, if they dont need double handling as you say then I say go ahead , no one is stopping anyone entering
-
So do an Endurance Test with them. 20km at 10km per hour is a better test of structural stability than a handful of laps around a ring wouldn't you say? To pass requires obedience, soundness and fitness. Just the ticket I say. An endurance test does not look at a dogs conformation, colour, pigment, dentition etc, its not a show A judge does not know who the dog is that walks into the ring (well local judges may, but international judges dont usually) they dont have the privillege of looking at a dog name and seeing it has it ET :D A GSD Specialty show incorporates how a GSD is constructed conformation wise, how it moves around the ring, fitness and endurance
-
Miss Danni is correct, GSD's should be able to work, they need to be fit and firm, one lap does not show anything of a dogs endurance, I too have seen dogs fall apart and tire because they just dont have the stamina.. These dogs look fantastic at the start of the class, but fade away and start to drop down the line..... A good double handler knows when to let the dog go on its own and when to come out and call the dog, its an art :D Yes, thanks Miss Danni, great double handler is I I think being a double handler is the most stressful part, the handler expects you to be in 10 places at once
-
I agree, people dropping bait is annoying. If someone had a squeaky toy which your dog responded too, wouldnt you think, ill use one of thise next time if it works for my dog?
-
Anglesun - Do you compete in the GSD Specialty ring?
-
I am not jumping at anyone I was replying to a comment I read I am not talking about a specialty show, I was refering to distraction other dogs in the ring regardless.
-
And someone behind or in front throwing bits of liver in the air is fair ?? Sorry but your not playing for sheep stations at a show teach your dog to focus on you, it's called training as previously stated isn't it?? I don't use toys for my dogs, I don't use food, but I wouldn't crack it if someone else did
-
Above is supposed to say food
-
Well that's too bad isn't it, my dog might get distracted by the good the other handler is tossing up and down, if a toy worked for my dog I would take it in. I have seen many judges use toys to get expression
-
Actually it does matter what the magistrate feels on the matter, hence why people take things to court, if they think the situation has been too harshly dealt with for what it is. In saying this I am talking about a dog simply barking behind a secure fence
-
I expect my dogs to alert me at people and other dogs walking past, thats what dogs do If they are behind a secure fence I dont see the issue. Coucil wont be able to enforce the issue anyway, it would be very hard for them to take the matter through a magistrates court if it got that far, me think a judge would think "over reaction a tad" IMO no one can tell you you have to keep your dog in a certain part of your Backyard (unless it has already been declared a dangerous dog previously). Hmmmmmmmmm maybe I could have fined the idiot kids or the school that used to walk past everyday and kick my fence to stir up my dog
-
without looking it up, I thought it was something to do with the history of the breed and that certain parts of coat were left to protect the vital organs
-
I agree :-) I wouldn't enter a specialty if it wasn't under a GSD judge, pointless as you say :-) Also agree about GSD's being the best ! Lol
-
I love the GSD specialty shows, they are great to attend and exhibit and also to go and watch. Not a waste of time in my opinion It's a great chance to see where the breed is at, what sites and kennels are producing and what we need to work on to improve the breed more

I'm Rachelles friend :-) I haz shepherds :-)

At GSD specialties the first 10 on the pegs must stay for the critique, generally no exhibitors will exit the ring until the last dog/bitch has been critiqued and once all exhibitors have been awarded their ribbon and shaken hands with the judge. It's just a coutesy and ettiquette thing, each exhibitor on the pegs deserves to be critiqed. regardless if you have a dog in the next class you are not allowed to leave the ring with the dog, in most cases you get someone else to hold the dog and present it for a critique and to spectators. So all in all I would say leaving the ring is being a bad sport, you might not like the judges decision but it's one judges opinion at the end of the day, you asked the judge for their opinion on the dog, no need to get annoyed and leave the ring if you don't like the outcome. My suggestion smile, present your dog, shake the judges hand and move on to show another day :-)

Obedience at werribee by any chance, I'm sure I recognize your golden retriever Bosco :-) I knew Levi picked up 2 Baby in Groups, well done :-)

When A Judge Does Not Examine Your Exhibit
Pockets replied to Jumabaar's topic in General Dog Discussion
I guess mouthing a baby puppy is a catch 22 situation really, it is good to get babies used to having their mouth checked, but then again a teething baby can be quite put off and have a daunting experience with someone poking around their mouth (however in saying that most judges just want to see that the baby has a correct scissor bite). Sometimes its not worth pushing it if the baby refuses as it can create a long horrible experience for the puppy, once the pup goes into minor then it should be expected that the mouth can be checked -
