Fabulous, I need my back yard ploughed. Do you think they can manage all the weeds AND topsoil???
-
Oh god. Why do I come into these threads when I know full well I'm going to vomit a little in my mouth??? That's so gross! My hat goes off to you for doing the right thing and I'm glad the lady took your advice and took the pooches to the vet. Let's hope the tapeworm isn't the only thing that gets treated this time though?!

Can I also just add that puppies tend to sleep a lot. They may cry when you leave, but probably not for very long. You'll find that a lot of the time, they'll have a whinge, then curl up and sleep most of the time away until you return. If you're concerned, you can try hiding tid-bits of food around their play-pen so that they can engage in the forreging (sp?) game.... you could try a kong toy, or anything interactive. They now have toys that are held together with velcro for dogs that like to destroy things and hear that ripping sound. There's plenty that you can do, but seriously, unless your dog is actually being psychotic when you're not there, I'd say you shouldn't worry yourself overly on this one.

Are Mushrooms Really Bad?
tryamartimmy replied to Love my Sonny and Neko's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I'm not sure- maybe it varies from dog to dog? When I first bought Gaetana home, I made up a huge amount of barf food for her and included mushrooms. She ate it all and I saw no ill effects. I found out shortly after that mushies are a no-no, but seeing as how she was ok, I finished that lot of food and didn't put any mushrooms in the next batch. Just watch your dogs closely- they might be the same? -
Good morning all. Took Tahni in for desexing yesterday and spent all day having kittens over if she'd be ok or not... I needn't have worried though- she was fine. The vet said that she was too small for a dog speying kit (they have kits!!!), so they had to use a cat one. $235 later and she's home, reclining in her doggy bed with a funky collar and tasty cat food. Oh the life of dogs!

HI!!! Welcome to DOL. I know it's probably not what you want to hear, but this is likely to continue for a period of time. You've taken a baby away from what they know, whether that's their dam or litter mates or just the people (breeder) that they're used to. It's natural for them to be scared of being away- every time you leave their sight, it's like they think you're leaving them too. The only thing I can suggest is to give the puppy space. Make sure they have toys outside to keep them occupied and when they bark and whine, don't pay them attention. The second you do, it's like saying 'Hey, bark and I will come'- what a training technique huh? Don't be fooled by the whining- the dog is ok, it's just attention seeking. Good luck.

Yes I do walk her in a harness... its edge touches this area.... That might be it. But there's no blood on the harness. ???

Hi all, I am home sick today and was spending some quality cuddle time with my pup, when I stroked under her armpit and came across a scab. It's about 2cm long and kind of tapers off towards the back of her shoulder. SHe as an identical one on the other side, but there aren't any anywhere else on her. She's eating well and isn't in pain, I haven't caught her chewing on the affected areas either. So Im just wondering what this could possible be due to? I've applied Savlon cream liberally to both scabs and will keep doing so until they begin clearing up. They're not red and pussy, just normal scabs, otherwise I would have taken her straight to the vet. We have to go to the vet next week anyway to get Tahni desexed, so if they're still there, I'll have them checked out. Anyone had something similar, or some advice to give? (Sorry if this thread doesn't make too much sense, I'm on flu medication which makes it difficult to concentrate and coordinate....) Kirsty

Hi Rhi- Glad everything is going ok with Jak. She'll be so happy to see you tomorrow, I bet. Sorry you've been sick- hope you're both feeling better soon. Kirsty

Hmmm. If your dog is lactose intolerant, I don't see why it can't drink lactose free skim milk. You can buy it in the long-life cartons. It's what I drink as I'm also lactose intolerant.

My dog is one of those rare ones that Show dog described- my OH will curl his hand up into a trumpet shape and toot out a few blasts and that triggers my dog to do little zoomies. She sticks her nose up into his hand (the one that's making all the air and noise), feel the air, then flip round and do a tight little circle zoom (because we're on the couch), then go back and repeat. She also loves her belly farts (you know- the one where you do raspberries on their tummy?). I would definitely never do this unless I knew she was ok with it and certainly wouldn't suggest it as a training technique. What was the breeder thinking???? PS- Lol about the papers remark. How adorable!

That's awesome. He's got such a great facial expression- really coy. As if he's wondering what his next move will be and if you'll be fast enough to catch him if it's naughty. Hehe

Just for those who are in the dark, what is Pyomentra? Hope Pixie is feeling better over the next few weeks. Sounds like you've had a close call!!!

I love your siggy by the way Deltron. Who did it for you?

Cheers for that, guys. I think I might just do the car ride for a few more months then. Your input is much appreciated!

Haha. Tahni doesn't actually stop, she just gives me 'the look'. I think I'm just over mothering. I'm such a pushover for her.

Hi all. ;) I've been walking my 5mth old Chi for the last two months or so down at the beach and at a local school oval after all the kiddies have gone (among other places), but it's always just been maybe half an hour at a time. We've also driven to each spot we were going to have a play at, rather than walking there. Yesterday morning, I got up early to take Tahni for a walk but this time, I chucked a water bottle, her treats and travel bowl into a small backpack and we walked all the way to the park. It's a good 20 minute walk there and she was let off the leash straight away, seeing as there were no kids or dogs around to distract or cause her to wander off. She was fine on the way there, and flying around the oval playing chasey with me (which I hurt my foot again by doing so- silly me). We had some water together after about half an hour and set off for home- a slightly different route from the way we came. It takes about 5 minutes more. About three quarters of the way there, Tahni was panting a bit and looking up at me like 'gee mum, can't you just carry me?' so I stopped and gave her some more water which she didn't actually seem all that interested in, then we set off again. A little bit more up the path, I gave in and picked her up, walking her to within the last 100 metres to our house. She was fine. Just kept on panting, and kissing my ear as she enjoyed the view from on high. Now, I thought that she would have been all tuckered out and would head straight for her bed and brekkie, but she just took a few moments for a drink, then was off for zoomies around the living room. So was the panting just because she was hot, not tired? In which case, should I have not given in to her? Is there such a thing as over doing it with little dogs? How much does everyone elses dog do before they give you the tired eyes?

Hehe. I got Gaetana at age 13weeks and I thought she was the quietest little dog ever (until bedtime- then the bogies came out!)... It took her about 4 weeks to find her voice. The first time she did it was while out walking and we passed a questionable looking character and she let out this funny little woof. I was stoked!!! Now she just does it to hear the sound of her own voice. She hates our neighbours (hey, HM and I hate them too, the noisy louts!) and will bark at them when they arrive/leave, but other than that, she'll only do it if she hears next door's dogs go off, or if she sees a dog she doesn't know. My squirt gun has begun to come out now, as she doesn't respond to 'enough' reliably yet. It is definitely working.

Hmmm. I was going to point and laugh and call you sicko-freaks... BUT Then I realised, I'd do exactly the same thing. Where's my straight-jacket?
-
Um... not sure about those... but I've heard good things about the 'pee post'. You can find these on Ebay usually. ETA- actually, I HAVE tried the second one!!! I paper trained Tahni using this. It does attract the dog, but she seemed more interested in ripping up the yummy smelling newspaper. Maybe it will work better outside?

As Tahni is my first dog (and entire at 5 months), I can't yet tell you what to expect.... But I HAVE had two cats desexed and boy was THAT an experience! The vet told us that they would be relatively drowsy and poorly coordinated from the anaesthetic wearing off. They said they'd be quiet and probably not want to eat much. Well! We got our kitties home and let them out of their crate in the living room (both equipped with very cool elizabethian buckets), where they spent the next half hour alternating between desperately trying to get out of their buckets, and trying to walk in a straight line. Later that night (after a whole tin of cat food- I know, little fatties), we heard a loud thump and came out to investigate. One of our Kitties had decideded that seeing as she could feel no pain, she must be wonder-cat and was in the process of climbing to the top of the fridge for another round of 'flying'. She tore a stitch and we had to isolate her then take her back to the vet the next morning. I think what I'm trying to say here is, you never really know how your animal is going to react, so it might be a good idea to wait for OH. It might save you some moolah.

Leopuppy- I was always told never to give birds asprin. But that's because they are unable to (for lack of a better word) fart- which they must, as the asprin causes gases in the tummy which (in the bird's case) expands to the point where it's either fart or explode. Seeing as dogs can fart and all, the only other problem would be if your dog has any other conditions that the asprin would aggrivate. I would personally make a call to the vet at the very least, just to put your mind at rest. Kirsty

This sounds to me like your dog is just becoming an old man. A lot of older humans also do this- get up a lot early to potter- if you will... He has grown older being used to having someone wake up with him for so long, but seeing as he's getting up earlier, maybe he's a little confused by why you aren't all up too? Hope this makes sense?

How To Make Pup Happy For His First Night At New Home
tryamartimmy replied to Janis's topic in Puppy Chat
Yay! You got your little puppy! You must be so happy now. Re the crate- My puppy hated her crate, so what I ended up doing was getting her a kiddy play pen and putting her bedding and toys in there. That way, she didn't feel as separated from the rest of us when the gate wasn't open. She only goes in the crate now for feeding and travelling. Good luck- and post lots of piccies. -
Those of you who have managed it in a week- my hat goes off to you. My pup took around 4 weeks to settle into her bedtime routine completely without whinging when left alone. This included me leaving her a radio playing softly, a snuggle puppy toy complete with heartbeat, comfy bedding and a few hidden treats/stuffed kong to keep her occupied. I only started seeing success in my second week (I think), so all I can say is persevere with it and go get those earplugs back. Also, if you've got a hot water bottle, these work wonders- I think that was the key to my pup actually settling down at night. I hope all goes well for you!
